A Comparative Study on the Analysis of Environmental Education in High School Chemistry - I Textbook (고등학교 화학 I 교과서의 환경 관련 단원 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand how the unit objectives and contents associated with environment are reflected on the 6 kinds of chemistry- I textbooks in the 7th curriculum and to present how to deal with the environmental education in chemistry- I. The results of this study are as follows. First, units associated with environment account for an average of 43.7% on chemistry- I in 7th curriculum. Second, contents of units related to environmental education on chemistry- I in 7th curriculum are environmental pollution(17.8%), environmental preservation and environmental pollution prevention(15.9%), environmental hygiene(12.2%), and any other things, Environmental pollution takes up a considerable part of environmental education. Third, the results for analyzing the objectives of chemistry- I in 7th curriculum show that Information Knowledge Awareness(34.0%) and Skill (29.9%) take up most parts. Fourth, Orientation (I) as analysis standard for objective of the units related to environmental education accounts for 10.2% of the total. It is clear that environmental education is carried out from STS point of view. In conclusion, environmental education in Chemistry- I focuses on fostering students' ability to apply the fundamental notion of chemistry to real life associated with environments. Therefore, it is necessary that environmental education in Chemistry- I should include value, attitude and participation and that improve students' ability to approach the environmental problem comprehensively.

  • Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the main factor to understand the hydrologic cycle on land surfaces of entire globe. It accounts for about 65% of precipitation returning to the atmosphere. Accurate estimation of the ET is essential to many applications of water resources management, hydrology, meteorology, climatology, and agriculture. Over the past few decades, there have been extensive efforts to develop and validate a number of ET models. Priestley-Taylor (P-T) and Food and Agriculture Organization Penman-Monteith (P-M) models are generally recognized as simple, but great operational approaches to estimate ET over different land cover types. In this study, we compare/validate different models of increasing complexity, P-T, P-M, and Common Land Model (CLM) in croplands, IA.

Evaluation of Green GDP by Emergy Analysis (Emergy 분석법에 의한 녹색 GDP 산정)

  • The gross domestic product(GDP) measures the welfare of a nation's economy through the aggregation of products and services produced in a nation. Although GDP is a proficient measure of the magnitude of the economy, many economists, environmentalists, and citizens have recently criticized the gross domestic product. The criticism stems from the fact that this measurement of domestic product does not account for environmental degradation and resource depletion. We need to estimate the environmentally adjusted net domestic product. The gross domestic product was 913 trillion won while environmental protection expenditure was 32.9 trillion won by monetary accounts of Korea, 2010. Loss of natural assets was 76.6 trillion emwon by emergy analysis of Korea, 2010. The Green GDP was accounted for 88.0% of the GDP to 803.5 trillion won.

Effect of Foehn Wind on Record-Breaking High Temperature Event (41.0℃) at Hongcheon on 1 August 2018 (2018년 8월 1일 홍천에서의 기록적인 고온 사례(41.0℃)에 영향을 준 푄 바람)

  • A record-breaking high surface air temperature of 41.0℃ was observed on 1 August 2018 at Hongcheon, South Korea. In this study, to quantitatively determine the formation mechanism of this extremely high surface air temperature, particularly considering the contributions of the foehn and the foehnlike wind, observational data from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model were utilized. In the backward trajectory analysis, trajectories of 100 air parcels were released from the surface over Hongcheon at 1600 LST on 1 August 2018. Among them, the 47 trajectories (38 trajectories) are tracked back above (below) heights of 1.4 km above mean sea level at 0900 LST 31 July 2018 and are defined as upper (lower) routes. Lagrangian energy budget analysis shows that for the upper routes, adiabatic heating (11.886 × 103 J kg-1) accounts for about 77% of the increase in the thermal energy transfer to the air parcels, while the rest (23%) is diabatic heating (3.650 × 103 J kg-1). On the other hand, for the lower routes, adiabatic heating (6.111 × 103 J kg-1) accounts for about 49% of the increase, the rest (51%) being diabatic heating (6.295 × 103 J kg-1). Even though the contribution of the diabatic heating to the increase in the air temperature rather varies according to the routes, the contribution of the diabatic heating should be considered. The diabatic heating is caused by direct heating associated with surface sensible heat flux and heating associated with the turbulent mixing. This mechanism is the Type 4 foehn described in Takane and Kusaka (2011). It is concluded that Type 4 foehn wind occurs and plays an important role in the extreme event on 1 August 2018.

A Study on the Development and Application of the Transport Accounts in Korea (한국의 교통계정 개발과 적용에 관한 연구 - 도로교통과 철도교통을 중심으로 -)

  • This paper proposed the framework for the Korean transport accounts which is suitable to Korean situation and can be used for international comparison. The framework is composed of the costs, the revenues and the estimation methodology. This framework is applied to both the Korean road and rail transport, respectively. The result showed that the total cost compared to GDP for the road was higher than the Europe's by 3.23% and that for the rail was lower than the Europe's by 0.67%. Also, the result showed that, in terms of the unit cost, the passenger cost per person-kilometer of road transport was 4.8 times higher than that of rail transport and the freight cost per ton-kilometer of road transport was 2.4 times higher than that of rail transport.

  • The combustion kinetics of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was studied by the dynamic model which accounts for the thermal decomposition of polymer at any time. The kinetic analysis was performed by a conventional nonisothermal thermogravimetric (TG) technique at several heating rates between 10 and 40 K/min in air atmosphere. The thermal decomposition of PET in air atmosphere was found to be a complex process composed of at least two stages for which kinetic values can be calculated. The combustion kinetic analysis of PET gave apparent activation energy for the first stage of $257.3{\sim}269.9\;kJ/mol$, with a value of $140.5{\sim}213.8\;kJ/mol$ for the second stage. To verify the effectiveness of the kinetic analysis method used in this work, the kinetic analysis results were compared with those of various analytical methods. The kinetic parameters were also compared with values of the pyrolysis of PET in nitrogen atmosphere.

  • Early efforts to model wave transformation from offshore to inshore were based on the ray theory which accounts for wave refraction due to changes in bathymetry and the diffraction effects were ignored. Prediction of nearshore waves with the combined effects of refraction and diffraction as well as reflection has taken a new dimension with the use of the mild-slope equation and the Boussinesq equation.   • A numerical procedure is developed to analyze the time-dependent deflections of prestressed concrete bridges constructed by the segmental cantilever method. The developed computer program accounts for the time-dependent properties of prestressed concrete materials due to the varying modulus of elasticity, creep and shrinkage of concrete and the stress relaxation of prestressing steel. It also accounts for the stiffness increase due to the presence of the steel reinforcements and the effects of the shear deformation of the prestressed concrete bridge girders. The program is applied to a multi-span continuous segmental prestressed concrete bridge to demonstrate its capabilities and to explore the behavior characteristics of the segmental bridges.

Research on Flame Retardant Formaldehyde-Free Plywood Glued by Aqueous Polymer Isocyanate Adhesive

  • Due to pronounced mechanical performance and being environmental friendly, aqueous polymer isocyanate adhesive (API) has been widely applied in the production of formaldehyde-free wood products. In this study, flame retardant formaldehyde-free plywood was prepared by incorporation of flame retardants into the API adhesive. Partially phosphorylated poly (vinyl alcohol) (PPVA) which was prepared by reacting poly (vinyl alcohol) with phosphoric acid was used to replace PVA in API formula. In addition, Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) was chosen as additive flame retardant, replacing traditional filler CaCO3 in API adhesive formula. And then, the flame retardant API adhesive with main agent (PPVA replacing PVA70wt.%, SBR emulsion 30wt.%), curing agent 10wt.% (accounts for of the main agent), and 20wt.% LDHs (accounts of the main agent) was used to prepare flame retardant plywood. The effect of application of PPVA and Mg-Al LDH on bonding strength of plywood was investigated. The flammability characteristics of the plywood were determined by cone calorimeter test (CCT). The results revealed that compared with the plywood prepared with API adhesive, the use of PPVA and LDH enhanced the flame retardancy of plywood without negatively affecting bonding strength. The CCT tests indicated that the heat release and smoke production flame retardant API plywood were lower than those of the ordinary API glued plywood. Promising developments for flame retardant API adhesive were expected in future applications of flame retardant formaldehyde-free plywood.
