  • The goal of present study is to evaluate the potential of soil washing for removing metal contaminants from a contaminated soil. Remediation of a soil contaminated with copper, cadmium and phenol were performed by a soil washing using a biosurfactant. The removal of copper, cadmium and phenol from soil (sandy, kaoline, mixed one) was evaluated as a function of biosurfactant (wt %) concentration in the batch process. The results showed that overall rejection coefficient for copper, cadmium and phenol were grater than 50 %, 25 %, respectively.

  • Various remediation methods have been applied to clean soils contaminated with pollutants. They remove contaminants from the soils by utilizing physicochemical, biological, and thermal processes and can satisfy soil remediation standards within a limited time; however, they also have an effect on the biological functions of soils by changing soil properties. In this study, changes of the biological properties of soils before and after treatment with three frequently used remediation methods-soil washing, land farming, and thermal desorption-were monitored to investigate the effects of remediation methods on soil biological functions. Total microbial number and soil enzyme activities, germination rate and growth of Brassica juncea, biomass change of Eisenia andrei were examined the effects on soil microorganisms, plant, and soil organisms, respectively. After soil washing, the germination rate of Brassica juncea increased but the above-ground growth and total microbial number decreased. Dehydrogenase activity, germination rate and above-ground growth increased in both land farming and thermal desorption treated soil. Although the growth of Eisenia andrei in thermal desorption treated soil was higher than any other treatment, it was still lower than that in non-contaminated soil. These results show that the remediation processes used to clean contaminated soil also affect soil biological functions. To utilize the cleaned soil for healthy and more value-added purposes, soil improvement and process development are needed.

  • The actively soil pollution by the toxic heavy-metals like the arsenic, cadmium, lead due to the industrialization and economic activity. The uses the electrokinetic remediation of contaminated soil has many researches against the fine soil having a small size in the on going. However, it is the actual condition which the research result that is not effective due to the low surface charge of the particle and high permeability shows in the electrokinetic remediation in comparison with the fine soil in the case of the sandy soil in which the particle size is large. In this research, the electrokinetic remediation and ultrasonic wave fetch strategy is compound applied against the sandy soil polluted by the arsenic, cadmium, and lead removal efficiency of the sandy soil through the comparison with the existing electrokinetic remediation tries to be evaluated. First of all, desorption of contaminants in soil by ultrasonic extraction in the Pre-Test conducted to see desorption effective 5~15%. After that, By conducted Batch-Test results frequency output century 200 Khz, reaction time 30 min, contaminated soil used in experiment was 500 g. Removal efficiency of arsenic, cadmium, lead are 25.55%, 8.01%, 34.90%. But, As, Cd, Pb remediation efficiency less than 1% in EK1(control group).

  • The solvent flushing apparatus for soil remediation was designed. After the soil around nuclear facilities was sampled and compulsorily contaminated by Co, the characteristics remediated by solvent flushing were analyzed. Meanwhile, the nonequilibrium sorption code was developed for modelling of the soil remediation by solvent flushing, input parameters needed for modelling were measured by laboratory experiment. Experimental results are as follows : The soil around nuclear facilities belongs to Silt Loam including a lot of silt and sand. When water was used as a solvent, the higher was the hydraulic conductivity. the higher the efficiency of soil remediation was. The values calculated by the nonequilibrium sorption code agreed with experimental values more exactly than the values calculated by the equilibrium sorption code. When EDTA solution was used as a solvent. the soil remediation efficiency by EDTA solution showed higher than that by water.

  • A new type of chemical oxidation technology utilizing micro bubble ozone oxidizer and a pneumatic fracturing equipment was developed to enhance field applicability of a traditional chemical oxidation technology using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizer for in-situ soil remediation. To find an efficient way to dissolve gaseous ozone into hydrogen peroxide, ozone was injected into water as micro bubble form then dissolved ozone concentration and its duration time were measured compared to those of simple aeration of gaseous ozone. As a result, dissolved ozone concentration in water increased by 31% (1.6 ppm ${\rightarrow}$ 2.1 ppm) and elapsed time for which maximum ozone concentration decreased by half lengthened from 9 min to 33 min. When the developed pneumatic fracturing technology was applied in sandy loam, cracks were developed and grown in soil for 5~30 seconds so that the radius of influence got longer by 71% from 392 cm to 671 cm. The remediation system using the micro bubble ozone oxidizer and the pneumatic fracturing equipment for field application was made and demonstrated its remediation efficiency at petroleum contaminated site. The system showed enhanced remediation capacity than the traditional chemical oxidation technology using hydrogen peroxide with reduced remediation time by about 33%.

  • This study examined the possibility of reutilization of soil reclaimed from contaminated sites after completing remediation. The current status of soil remediation methods in Korea was reviewed and physicochemical properties of soil before and after remediation processes were examined to access the recycling possibility of reclaimed soils based on Recycling Aggregate Quality Standard. The most commonly practiced soil remediation techniques are soil washing, land farming, and thermal desorption. These techniques tend to deteriorate various soil properties including electrical conductivity(EC), organic matter content(OM), available P2O5, and cation exchange capacity(CEC). Evaluation of the properties of soil retrieved after each remediation process indicated soil washing may yield the most suitable soil for use as a filling, covering, back-filling, road pavement, and blocking materials, In addition, the soils reclaimed from land farming and thermal desorption have potential utility as a filling, covering and road pavement materials.

  • The objective of this study was to decide the designing factor for remediaton of the contaminated site. The soil and ground-water samples were analyzed and hydro- geological characteristics was assayed for the survey of pollution level. Also air-permeability test and MPN(most probable number) test were conducted for selecting the designing factor. The contaminants were mainly found in north-west part of the site and were expected to move toward the south. Ex-situ technology was expected more useful than in-situ one with the results of air-permeability test saying that air permeability was relatively low. Additional microbes were expected for remediation efficiency because residual microbes were loosely populated. The choosing of the designing factor was requisite for remediation of contaminated site.

  • The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of mixed surfactant solution for removal of perchloroethylene (PCE) in soil. Ten different surfactant solutions were used in column studies. Mixed surfactant solutions (anionic and nonionic) were most effectively worked in the sandy soil for removal of PCE as a result of synergism between the two types of surfactants. The effectiveness of the mixture of surfactants was 35 % greater than that for the anionic or nonionic surfactant alone. The results indicate that mixed surfactant solution leaching is a promising candidate for the remediation of PCE contaminated sandy soil.

  • Sorption and desorption studies were conducted to evaluate several media as a potential biobarrier for the remediation of groundwater contaminated with hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs). Pahokee and Bion peats, Devonian Ohio shale, vermicompost, and 50% HDTMA-montmorillonite were used as model sorbents. Sorption and desorption isotherms were determined using the radiolabeled phenanthrene (Phe). Sorption capacity of Phe on several sorbents was in the order Ohio shale > 50% HDTMA-montmorillonite > vermicompost > Pahokee peat. Mineralization kinetics was investigated for Phe-sorbed sorbents using Pseudomonas putida 17484. Among the tested sorbents, active biodegradation of Phe was observed in shale and vermicompost: degradation in shale exhibited little lag time while that in shale showed a significant lag time. Results of this study indicate that sorbents used in this work can be utilized as permeable reactive biobarrier media for the remediation of HOC-contaminated groundwater.
