Identifying highly discriminating genes is a critical step in tumor recognition tasks based on microarray gene expression profile data and machine learning. Gene selection based on tree models has been the subject of several studies. However, these methods are based on a single-tree model, often not robust to ultra-highdimensional microarray datasets, resulting in the loss of useful information and unsatisfactory classification accuracy. Motivated by the limitations of single-tree-based gene selection, in this study, ensemble gene selection methods based on multiple-tree models were studied to improve the classification performance of tumor identification. Specifically, we selected the three most representative tree models: ID3, random forest, and gradient boosting decision tree. Each tree model selects top-n genes from the microarray dataset based on its intrinsic mechanism. Subsequently, three ensemble gene selection methods were investigated, namely multipletree model intersection, multiple-tree module union, and multiple-tree module cross-union, were investigated. Experimental results on five benchmark public microarray gene expression datasets proved that the multiple tree module union is significantly superior to gene selection based on a single tree model and other competitive gene selection methods in classification accuracy.

Variable selection is one of the most crucial tasks in supervised learning, such as regression and classification. The best subset selection is straightforward and optimal but not practically applicable unless the number of predictors is small. In this article, we propose directly solving the best subset selection via the genetic algorithm (GA), a popular stochastic optimization algorithm based on the principle of Darwinian evolution. To further improve the variable selection performance, we propose to run multiple GA to solve the best subset selection and then synthesize the results, which we call ensemble GA (EGA). The EGA significantly improves variable selection performance. In addition, the proposed method is essentially the best subset selection and hence applicable to a variety of models with different selection criteria. We compare the proposed EGA to existing variable selection methods under various models, including linear regression, Poisson regression, and Cox regression for survival data. Both simulation and real data analysis demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed method.

Deep learning has made great strides in the field of unstructured data such as text, images, and audio. However, in the case of tabular data analysis, machine learning algorithms such as ensemble methods are still better than deep learning. To keep up with the performance of machine learning algorithms with good predictive power, several deep learning methods for tabular data have been proposed recently. In this paper, we review the latest deep learning models for tabular data and compare the performances of these models using several datasets. In addition, we also compare the latest boosting methods to these deep learning methods and suggest the guidelines to the users, who analyze tabular datasets. In regression, machine learning methods are better than deep learning methods. But for the classification problems, deep learning methods perform better than the machine learning methods in some cases.

The availability of high-resolution laser scanning data and advanced machine learning algorithms has enabled an accurate potential rockfall source identification. However, the presence of other mass movements, such as landslides within the same region of interest, poses additional challenges to this task. Thus, this research presents a method based on an integration of Gaussian mixture model (GMM) and ensemble artificial neural network (bagging ANN [BANN]) for automatic detection of potential rockfall sources at Kinta Valley area, Malaysia. The GMM was utilised to determine slope angle thresholds of various geomorphological units. Different algorithms(ANN, support vector machine [SVM] and k nearest neighbour [kNN]) were individually tested with various ensemble models (bagging, voting and boosting). Grid search method was adopted to optimise the hyperparameters of the investigated base models. The proposed model achieves excellent results with success and prediction accuracies at 95% and 94%, respectively. In addition, this technique has achieved excellent accuracies (ROC = 95%) over other methods used. Moreover, the proposed model has achieved the optimal prediction accuracies (92%) on the basis of testing data, thereby indicating that the model can be generalised and replicated in different regions, and the proposed method can be applied to various landslide studies.
Image-based gender classification and age estimation of human are classic problems in computer vision. Most of researches in this field focus just only one task of either gender classification or age estimation and most of the reported methods for each task focus on accuracy performance and are not computationally light. Thus, running both tasks together simultaneously on low cost mobile or embedded systems with limited cpu processing speed and memory capacity are practically prohibited. In this paper, we propose a novel light-weight gender classification and age estimation method based on ensemble multitasking deep learning with light-weight processing neural network architecture, which processes both gender classification and age estimation simultaneously and in real-time even for embedded systems. Through experiments over various well-known datasets, it is shown that the proposed method performs comparably to the state-of-the-art gender classification and/or age estimation methods with respect to accuracy and runs fast enough (average 14fps) on a Jestson Nano embedded board.

Classification is a predictive modeling for a categorical target variable. Various classification ensemble methods, which predict with better accuracy by combining multiple classifiers, became a powerful machine learning and data mining paradigm. Well-known methodologies of classification ensemble are boosting, bagging and random forest. In this article, we assume that decision trees are used as classifiers in the ensemble. Further, we hypothesized that tree size affects classification accuracy. To study how the tree size in uences accuracy, we performed experiments using twenty-eight data sets. Then we compare the performances of ensemble algorithms; bagging, double-bagging, boosting and random forest, with different tree sizes in the experiment.
Squat reinforced concrete (SRC) shear walls are a critical part of the structure for both office/residential buildings and nuclear structures due to their significant role in withstanding seismic loads. Despite this, empirical formulae in current design standards and published studies demonstrate a considerable disparity in predicting SRC wall shear strength. The goal of this research is to develop and evaluate hybrid and ensemble artificial neural network (ANN) models. State-of-the-art population-based algorithms are used in this research for hybrid intelligence algorithms. Six models are developed, including Honey Badger Algorithm (HBA) with ANN (HBA-ANN), Hunger Games Search with ANN (HGS-ANN), fitness-distance balance coyote optimization algorithm (FDB-COA) with ANN (FDB-COA-ANN), Averaging Ensemble (AE) neural network, Snapshot Ensemble (SE) neural network, and Stacked Generalization (SG) ensemble neural network. A total of 434 test results of SRC walls is utilized to train and assess the models. The results reveal that the SG model not only minimizes prediction variance but also produces predictions (with R2= 0.99) that are superior to other models.

The Korea film industry has matured and the number of movie-watching per capita has reached the highest level in the world. Since then, movie industry growth rate is decreasing and even the total sales of movies per year slightly decreased in 2018. The number of moviegoers is the first factor of sales in movie industry and also an important factor influencing additional sales. Thus it is important to predict the number of movie audiences. In this study, we predict the cumulative number of audiences of films using stacking, an ensemble method. Stacking is a kind of ensemble method that combines all the algorithms used in the prediction. We use box office data from Korea Film Council and web comment data from Daum Movie (www.movie.daum.net). This paper describes the process of collecting and preprocessing of explanatory variables and explains regression models used in stacking. Final stacking model outperforms in the prediction of test set in terms of RMSE.
Reinforced Concrete (RC) shear walls are one of the civil structures in nuclear power plants to resist lateral loads such as earthquakes and wind loads effectively. Risk-informed and performance-based regulation in the nuclear industry requires considering possible accidents and determining desirable performance on structures. As a result, rather than predicting only the ultimate capacity of structures, the prediction of performances on structures depending on different damage states or various accident scenarios have increasingly needed. This study aims to develop machine-learning models predicting drifts of the RC shear walls according to the damage limit states. The damage limit states are divided into four categories: the onset of cracking, yielding of rebars, crushing of concrete, and structural failure. The data on the drift of shear walls at each damage state are collected from the existing studies, and four regression machine-learning models are used to train the datasets. In addition, the bagging ensemble method is applied to improve the accuracy of the individual machine-learning models. The developed models are to predict the drifts of shear walls consisting of various cross-sections based on designated damage limit states in advance and help to determine the repairing methods according to damage levels to shear walls.
