The determination of the boron isotopic ratio in solutions was achieved by means of a solid state track detector by using an alpha track. The neutron flux was optimized by using a Cd-foil to find the optimum conditions for counting the number of alpha tracks on the selected solid detector caused by the (n, $\alpha$) nuclear reaction of boron. The home-made multi-dot detector plate was utilized in this study to increase the reproducibility of the measurement by uniformly drying the boron solution within the marked circle area on the detector plate. The experimental results of this study verified that the $^{11}B/^{10}B $ isotopic ratio can be measured by observing the number of alpha tracks for different concentrated standard solutions with various isotopic compositions. This technique was applied to the determination of $^{10}B$ enrichment factor in a biological sample for a boron neutron capture therapy.
Korean food waste, one of the abundantly available but environmentally problematic organic wastes in Korea, was utilized as solid-substrate by fungal strain Aspergillus niger ATcC 6275 for the production of enzymemixture containing amylase, cellulase and xylanase. The enzyme mixture can be used as high value-added animal feed. Solid-state fermentation method yielded a 84-fold enhancement in xylanase activity compared with submerged fermentation method. The effect of incubation period, incubation temperature, pH of medium, moisture content, inoculum size and enrichment of the medium with nitrogen and carbon sources were observed for optimal production of these enzymes The optimal amylase activity of 33.10 U/g, cellulase activity of 24.41 U/g, xylanase activity of 328.84 U/g were obtained at 8 days incubation with 50%(w/w) soy bean flake, with incubation temperature of $25^{\circ}C$, pH of 6.38, optimal moisture content of 55% and with inoculum size of $3.8{\times}10^6$spore/g. Enzyme activities were enhanced when ImM $CaSO_4$, 2% Malt extract and 2% galactose were added as mineral, nitrogen and carbon enrichment respectively.
Airborne particles collected from a heavily industrialized site were analyzed by chemical speciation of seven trace metals: Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, and As. The average concentrations were as follows: $Zn,\;502.0{\pm}230.7;\;Pb,\;176.5{\pm}310.9;\;Cu,\;111.9{\pm}82.7;\;As,\;38.0{\pm}31.0;\;Cr,\;21.5{\pm}24.4;\;Cd,\;20.8{\pm}17.4;\;and\;Ni,\;11.4{\pm}8.4\;ng/m^3$. The median enrichment factor (EF) values of Cd (7,280), As (1,030), Cu (215), Zn (214), and Pb (143), with respect to iron, were much larger than 100. We observed that Cd was found in the soluble and exchange- able form (56.9%), and that Pb and Cr were found in carbonates, oxides and the reducible form (69.8% and 61.1%, respectively). These two forms, which are the most easily absorbed into human body tissue, predominated in most of the trace metals investigated in this study.

The purpose of study is obtaining low-emission and high-efficiency in LPi engine with hydrogen enrichment. The test engine was named variable compression ratio single cylinder engine (VACRE). The fuel supply system provides LPG/hydrogen mixtures based on same heating value. A varied sensors such as crank shaft position sensor (CPS) and hall sensor supplies spark timing data to ignition controller. Displacement of VACRE is $1858.2cm^3$. VACRE was runned 1400rpm with compression ratio 8. Spark timing was set MBT without knocking. Relative air-fuel ratio($\lambda$) of this work was varied between 0,8 and 1.5.
Tin mineralizations in South Korea have been found only in the Ulchin and the Sangdong areas. The Wangpiri and the Yuchang Sn pegmatites appear to be in close spatial and genetical relation to the Wangpiri granitoid in the Ulchin area, and the Soonkyeong Sn pegmatite be in close association with the Nonggeori granites in the Sangdong area from geochemical viewpoint. The electron-microprobe analysis of muscovite, biotite, tourmaline and cassiterite from the granitoids and pegmatites in the Ulchin and the Sangdong areas has revealed a distinct differences of geochemical compositions. The Wangpiri and the Yuchang Sn pegmatites show an enrichment of MnO and a depletion of $TiO_2$, FeO and MgO in comparison with the Soonkyeong Sn pegmatite. This result coincides with the geochemical compositions of granitoid rocks in these areas. Enrichment of MnO and depletion of $TiO_2$ FeO and MgO are characteristic in muscovite, biotite and tourmaline of pegmatites compared with those of granitoids. These geochemical differences of muscovite, biotite and tourmaline between granitoids and pegmatites in these areas implies that pegmatites are more fractionated than granitoids.

We investigated the effects of halogenated aromatic compounds (HACs) including naturally occurring ones (L-thyroxine, 3-chloro-L-tyrosine, 5-chloroindole, 2-chlorophenol, 4-chlorophenol and chlorobenzene) on polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) dechlorination in sediment cultures. A PCB-dechlorinating enrichment culture of sediment microorganisms from the St. Lawrence River was used as an initial inoculum. When the culture was inoculated into Aroclor 1248 sediments amended with each of the six HACs, the extent of dechlorination was not enhanced by amendment with HACs. The dechlorination patterns in the HAC-amended sediments were nearly identical to that of the HAC-free sediments except the 3-chloro-L-tyrosine-amended ones where no dechlorination activity was observed. When these sediment cultures were transferred into fresh sediments with the same HACs, the dechlorination specificities remained the same as those of the initial inoculations. Thus, in the present study, the substrate range of the highly selected enrichment culture could not be broadened by the HACs. It appears that HACs affect PCB dechlorination mainly through population selection rather than enzyme induction of single population.
This study was performed to investigate the influence of the amino acid composition of diet and environment on RNA, protein content in brain and learning ability in rats. Forty-two Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into six groups according to type of diet, casein, soybean meal, or corn gluten and rearing condition, isolated or enriched. They were fed foods ad libitum for 6 weeks. A water maze was used to test behavioral performance for 3 weeks from 4th week. The rats were sacrificed at 6th week and their whole brains were taken and frozen for assay of RNA and protein. The results were summarized as follows : 1) The body weight gain for the experimental periods of corn gluten group was significantly lower than the casein and the soybean meal group. 2) The brain weight of the corn gluten group was significantly lower than the casein and the soybean meal group and the environmental enrichment slightly increased it among rats fed the corn gluten diet. 3) The total RNA contents were the greatest in the environmentally enriched casein group. The brain protein contents of the isolated corngluten group was the smallest. However, the contents of the enriched corn gluten group were similar to those of the others. 4) In the water maze test, the isolated corngluten group spent significantly more time than the others. Environmental enrichment could decrease time to perform the task of the maze.
In subtractive hybridization, target sequences in the tester are enriched by hybridizing with an excess amount of driver, followed by removing the tester hybridized with the driver. All of existing subtractive cloning methods are designed to remove the tester/driver hybrid. The removal of hybrid, however, is often unsatisfactory For various reasons. In this study we developed a subtractive enrichment protocol in which the tester/driver can be completely removed by selecting only the tester/tester after hybridization. In this protocol both the tester and driver DNAs are ligated with same linker DNAs and amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The tester DNA is then digested with two different enzymes and used in subsequent hybridization with an excess driver. After hybridization, the DNA is ligated with the adaptor that is only compatible with the tester/tester. Since only the tester/tester can have the new adaptor, no tester/driver can be amplified by PCR in this protocol. Unlike other methods, a 100% subtraction efficiency can be achieved even though the enzymatic treatments used in the enrichment procedure are incomplete. Furthermore, only the hybridized tester DNA can have the new adaptor and be amplified by PCR, resulting in 100% denaturation in effect. The efficacy of this novel method was verified with the model system in which a known amount of the target sequence is included.
Symbiobacterium toebii has been reported as a thermophile exhibiting a commensal interaction with Geobacillus toebii. The distribution of the commensal thermophiles in various soils was investigated using a denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Based on the DGGE analysis, the enrichment condition for the growth of Symbiobacterium sp. was found to also enrich populations of several other microbial spp. as well as Symbiobacterium sp. In the enrichment experiment, several different 16S rDNA sequences of commensal thermophiles were detected in all of the soil samples tested, indicating that commensal thermophiles are widely distributed in various soils.
