  • The linewidth enhancement factor $\alpha$ and fiber dispersion of 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ strained multi-quantum well laser diodes are measured using small signal power modulation transfer function in a dispersive fiber. The measured fiber dispersion values are between 16.766 and 16.786ps/nm/km and these are the expected values from standard single mode fiber. To measure the $\alpha$ parameter in the actual operational range of the laser diodes, the dependence of $\alpha$ on laser output power is measured. The $\alpha$ parameter increases linearly as the power of the laser diode increases. This result can explain the non-linear gain effect on the $\alpha$ parameter more accurately than any other measurements.

  • A technique of mixing enhancement by using an elliptic jet screech reflector has been examined experimentally in an underexpanded sonic round jet where jet screech tone is generated. Since jet screech is known to enhance jet spreading, a reflector was designed to focus jet screech waves near the nozzle lip at an underexpanded jet. The reflector has an elliptic cross section of which one focus is located near the nozzle lip and the other in the jet screech source region in a plane including the jet axis. In the jet with the elliptic reflector, the mass flow rate showed a significant increase in the jet entrainment when compared to that for the small disk reflector. This was attributed to the increased screech amplitude near the nozzle lip as well as the mode change of the jet. The jet mixing was also increased by the amplified jet screech at two other underexpanded jets, but the jet oscillation mode did not change.

  • A significant enhancement of the magneto-optical Faraday rotation and extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) in the cascaded double-fishnet (CDF) structure with periodic rectangular apertures is theoretically predicted by using the extended finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The results demonstrate that the transmittance spectrum of the CDF structure has two EOT resonant peaks in a broad spectrum spanning visible to near-infrared wavebands, one of them coinciding with the enhanced Faraday rotation and large figure of merit (FOM) at the same wavelength. It is most important that the resonant position and intensity of the transmittance, Faraday rotation and FOM can be simply tailored by adjusting the incident wavelength, the thickness of the magnetic layer, and the offset between two metallic rectangular apertures, etc. Furthermore, the intrinsic physical mechanism of the resonance characteristics of the transmittance and Faraday rotation is thoroughly studied by investigating the electromagnetic field distributions at the location of resonance. It is shown that the transmittance resonance is mainly determined by different hybrid modes of surface plasmons (SPs) and plasmonic electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) behavior, and the enhancement of Faraday rotation is mostly governed by the plasmonic electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) behavior and the conversion of the transverse magnetic (TM) mode and transverse electric (TE) mode in the magnetic dielectric layer.

  • Criticality alarm systems (CASs) are mandatory in nuclear plants for prompt alarm in the event of any criticality incident. False criticality alarms are not desirable as they create a panic environment for radiation workers. The present article describes the design enhancement of the CAS at each stage and provides maximum availability, preventing false criticality alarms. The failure mode and effect analysis are carried out on each element of a CAS. Based on the analysis, additional hardware circuits are developed for early fault detection. Two different methods are developed, one method for channel loop functionality test and another method for dose alarm test using electronic transient pulse. The design enhancement made for the external systems that are integrated with a CAS includes the power supply, criticality evacuation hooter circuit, radiation data acquisition system along with selection of different soft alarm set points, and centralized electronic test facility. The CAS incorporating all improvements are assembled, installed, tested, and validated along with rigorous surveillance procedures in a nuclear plant for a period of 18,000 h.

  • This paper proposes an efficient computation-aware mode decision and search point (SP) allocation algorithm for spatial and quality scalabilities in Scalable Video Coding. In our proposal, a linear model is derived to allocate the computation for macroblocks in enhancement layers by using the rate distortion costs of the base layer. In addition, an adaptive SP decision algorithm is proposed to decide the number of SPs for motion estimation under the constraint of the allocated computation. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm allocates the computation resource efficiently and outperforms other works in rate distortion performance under the same computational availability constraint.

  • This paper discusses on new two LCD technologies featured by the fast electro-optic response:one is polymer-stabilized FLCDs that exhibit V-shaped electro-optic (EO) switching called PSV-mode FLCDs with response time of 400 ${\mu}$ s; and the other is TN-mode LCDs that exhibit a frequency modulation response (called PM-TN LCDs)and a peculiar sensitivity to the high frequency component of driving voltage waveforms resulting in a short decay time constant of 5ms and an enhancement in the over-driving that yields short response time of 1ms between two gray levels.

  • In this paper, a new efficient hidden node detection method is proposed to decide whether the RTS/CTS mechanism is necessary to resolve the hidden node problem for the data transmission of each node in infrastructure mode IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. The nodes, for which the RTS/CTS mechanism is found to be not necessary by the hidden node detection method, can transmit their data frames without performing the RTS/CTS exchange. Only the nodes, for which the RTS/CTS mechanism is found to be necessary by the hidden node detection method, perform the RTS/CTS exchange before their data frame transmissions.

  • We propose a novel methodology based on the multiplication function to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for vibration detection in a phi optical time-domain reflectometer system (phi-OTDR). The extreme-mean complementary empirical mode decomposition (ECEMD) is designed to break down the original signal into a set of inherent mode functions (IMFs). The multiplication function in terms of selected IMFs is used to determine a vibration's position. By this method, the SNR of a phi-OTDR system is enhanced by several orders of magnitude. Simulations and experiments applying the method to real data prove the validity of the proposed approach.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction mode selection method in Scalable Video Coding(SVC) which is an emerging video coding standard as an extension of H.264/Advanced Video Coding(H.264/AVC). The proposed method decides a candidate intra prediction mode based on the characteristic of macroblock smoothness. Statistical analysis is applied to computing that smoothness in spatial enhancement layer. We also propose an early termination scheme for Intra_BL mode decision where the RD cost value of Intra_BL is utilized. Compared with JSVM software, our scheme can reduce about 55% of the computation complexity of intra prediction on average, while the performance degradation is negligible; For low QP values, the average PSNR loss is very negligible, equivalently the bit rate increases by 0.01%. For high QP values, the average PSNR loss is less than 0.01dB, which equals to 0.25% increase in bitrate on average.

  • In this paper, a circuit design techniques for Improving the voltage gain of the GaAs MESFET single amplifier is presented. Also, various types of existing current mirror and proposed current mirror of new configuration are compared. To obtain the high differential mode gain and low common mode gain, bootstrap gain enhancement technique Is used and common mode feedback Is employed In the design of differential amplifier. The simulation results show that designed differential amplifier has differential gain of 57.66dB, unity gain frequency of 23.25GHz. Also, differential amplifier using common mode feedback with alternative negative current mirror has CMRR of 83.S8dB, stew rate of 3500 V /\ulcorners.
