Recently, the portion of electronic control in an engine system has been increasing with the aim of meeting the requirements of emissions and fuel efficiency of the engine system in the construction machinery industry. Correspondingly, the complexity of the engine management system (EMS) has increased. This study developed an engine HiLS system for reducing the cost and time required for function development for the EMS. The engine model for HiLS is composed of air, fuel, torque, and dynamometer models. Further, the mean value method is applied to the developed HiLS engine model. This model is validated by its application to a heavy-duty diesel engine equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation system and a turbocharger. Test results demonstrate that the model has accuracy greater than 90 and also verify the feasibility of the virtual calibration process.

This study describes the response performances of actual engine speed, turbocharger speed, air mass flow rate through engine, boost pressure ratio, exhaust temperature and combustion efficiency for a six-cylinder four-stroke turbocharged diesel engine during the change in operating conditions by using the computer simulation with test bed. In order to obtain the transient conditions, a suddenly large load was applied to the simulation engine with the several kinds of inertia moment in turbocharger and engine, and engine set speed. From the results of this study, the following conclusions were summarized The inferior response performances was mainly caused by turbocharger lag, and air mass flow rate and boost pressure ratio were closely related to the turbocharger speed. A reduced moment of turbocharger inertia resulted in less transient speed drop and much faster recovery to the steady state of the engine. The increase of moment of engine inertia reduced cyclic variation of engine speed. When a large load was applied to the engine at high speed, the engine could be fastly recovered. However, when the same load was applied to the engine at low speed, the engine was stalled.

In a CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine, CNG is used as the main fuel and a small amount of diesel is injected into the cylinder to provide ignition priming. In this study, a remodeling of the existing diesel engine into a CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine is proposed. In this engine, diesel is injected at a high pressure by common rail direct injection (CRDI) and CNG is injected at the intake port for premixing. The CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine had an equally satisfactory coordinate torque and power as the conventional diesel engine. Moreover, the CNG alternation rate is over 89% throughout the operating range of the CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine. PM emission by the dual-fuel engine is 94% lower than that by the diesel engine; however, NOx emission by the dual-fuel engine is higher than that by the diesel engine.

Test device using virtual engine simulator can help reduce the number of engine tests through tests similar to the actual engine tests and repeat the test under the same condition, and thus reduce the engine maintenance and operating costs. Also, as it is possible to easily implement extreme conditions in which it is hard to conduct actual tests, it can prevent engine damages that may happen during the actual engine test under such conditions. In this study, an upgraded small jet engine performance test device was developed that can conduct both real and virtual engine test by applying real-time engine model to the existing micro jet engine performance test device that was previously developed by authors. This newly developed multi-purpose small jet engine performance test device is expected to be used for various educational and research purposes.
While the engine dynamics is, in nature, a uncertain nonlinear system, practical control methods for nonlinear systems are presently limited. This paper discusses important issues of engine control such as fuel economy, exhaust emission control, and driveability. Recent development in engine control technologies is reviewed. New control methods which appear to be useful for engine control are introduced.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of compression ratio on engine performance in a LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) engine converted from a diesel engine. In ordor to determine the ideal compression ratio, a variable compression ratio 4-cylinder engine was developed. Retrofitting a diesel engine into a LPG engine is technically very complicated compared to a gasoline to LPG conversion. The cylinder head and the piston crown were modified to bum LPG in the engine. Compression ratios were increased from 8 to 10 in an increment of 0.5, the ignition timing was controlled to be at MBT(Minimum Spark Advance for Best Torque) for each case.

The purpose of this study is to design the adaptive speed control system of a marine diesel engine by combining the Model Matching Method and the Nominal Model Tracking Method. The authors proposed already a new method to determine efficiently the PID control Parameters by the Model Matching Method. typically taking a marine diesel engine as a non-oscillatory second-order system. But. actually it is very difficult to find out the exact model of a diesel engine. Therefore, when diesel engine model and actual diesel engine are unmatched as an another approach to promote the speed control characteristics of a marine diesel engine, this paper Proposes a Model Reference Adaptive Speed Control system of a diesel engine, in which PID control system for the model of a diesel engine is adopted as the nominal model and Fuzzy controller and derivative operator are adopted as the adaptive controller.

This paper presents dynamic clearance verification considering engine movement for vehicle engine room package and validates through physical vehicle test. Traditionally, static clearance guide has been used for engine room package, but it's only 2-dimension criteria that results in requiring unnecessary space and it's not possible to conduct engine movement with real driving conditions. Thus, the dynamic DMU considers engine movement based on 28 load cases that are Roll Data analyzed by CAE for maximum engine movement and visualizes part-to-part dynamic clearance into virtual space. The dynamic DMU enables to develop compact engine room package without unnecessary space. The result of comparison between simulation and physical test has 0.892 correlation coefficient.
Distribution of fuel-air mixture has a strong influence on performance and emissions of a compressed natural gas (CNG) engine. In this paper, parametric study is performed by KIVA-3V to investigate fuel-air mixture with respect to injection timing, cycle equivalence ratio and engine speed. With open-valve injection intensive mixing during intake and compression stroke results in relatively homogeneous mixture in the cylinder. Sequential induction of fuel-air mixture and fresh air results in stratification in the cylinder among the test cases at closed-valve injection. There is close similarity in the calculated distributions of the mixture in the cylinder with different cycle equivalence ratios and engine speeds. The results are compared against pressure traces and flame images obtained in a single cylinder engine converted from a 11L six-cylinder heavy duty diesel engine.

The major effective factors on the ride quality of a vehicle are the vibration and noise of the engine and drive system. Engine contributes about 80% of the vibration and noise in the vehicle, and exciting forces of the engine are transmitted onto the vehicle frame through the engine mount. This paper studies the vibration reduction of a vehicle through the improvement of the engine mount. A computer program for optimal design is developed and the engine mount conditions are optimized to reduce the WRMS of PSD of acceleration at the driver's seat, which are caused by the exciting forces at the idle speed. Design variables are selected as the stiffness, mount angle and the location of the engine mount rubber. It is shown through computer simulation that the PSD of acceleration at the driver's seat can be improved by redesigning the engine mount system.
