  • Energy conservation is one of the most important issues for evaluating the performance of wireless sensor network (WSN) applications. Generally speaking, hierarchical clustering protocols such as LEACH, LEACH-C, EEEAC, and BCDCP are more efficient in energy conservation than flat routing protocols. However, these typical protocols still have drawbacks of unequal and high energy depletion in cluster heads (CHs) due to the different transmission distance from each CH to the base station (BS). In order to minimize the energy consumption and increase the network lifetime, we propose a new hierarchical routing protocol, distance aware intelligent clustering protocol (DAIC), with the key concept of dividing the network into tiers and selecting the high energy CHs at the nearest distance from the BS. We have observed that a considerable amount of energy can be conserved by selecting CHs at the nearest distance from the BS. Also, the number of CHs is computed dynamically to avoid the selection of unnecessarily large number of CHs in the network. Our simulation results showed that the proposed DAIC outperforms LEACH and LEACH-C by 63.28% and 36.27% in energy conservation respectively. The distance aware CH selection method adopted in the proposed DAIC protocol can also be adapted to other hierarchical clustering protocols for the higher energy efficiency.

  • As one of the most significant challenges in the virtual data center, the virtual data center embedding has attracted extensive attention from researchers. The existing research works mainly focus on how to design algorithms to increase operating revenue. However, they ignore the energy consumption issue of the physical data center in virtual data center embedding. In this paper, we focus on studying the energy-aware virtual data center embedding problem. Specifically, we first propose an energy consumption model. It includes the energy consumption models of the virtual machine node and the virtual switch node, aiming to quantitatively measure the energy consumption in virtual data center embedding. Based on such a model, we propose two algorithms regarding virtual data center embedding: one is heuristic, and the other is based on particle swarm optimization. The second algorithm provides a better solution to virtual data center embedding by leveraging the evolution process of particle swarm optimization. Finally, experiment results show that our proposed algorithms can effectively save energy while guaranteeing the embedding success rate.

  • The design goal of protocols in wireless sensor networks (WSN) is mainly energy efficiency because of their stringent resource and energy constraints. In this paper, we propose a simple cross-layered protocol for WSNs, so called EATD(Energy-Aware Tree based Delivery scheme). EATD is a tree-based energy aware data delivery algorithm by using a SYNC packet with link and node cost to maximize the network lifetime. Our simulation results show significant improvements compared with existing schemes in terms of energy efficiency and delay.

  • Efficient power management plays a crucial role to strengthen competitiveness in the market of portable mobile commodities. This paper presents a proactive power management technique, called by Energy-Aware Scheduling policY (EASY), to exploit the sleep time information of running applications. Different from previous power management approaches focusing on power conservation in standby mode, the proposed scheme characterizes each application program's operational characteristic in active mode by observing how long the task stays in sleep state of CPU scheduler. Based on the measured sleep time, the proposed EASY speculates an adequate CPU clock frequency according to the current CPU workload and scales the frequency directly to the predicted one. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme reduces the power consumption by 10-30% on average compared to traditional DPM approach, with a minimal impact on the performance overhead.

  • In future, since the user experience plays a more and more important role in the development of today's communication systems, quality of experience (QoE) becomes a widely used metric, which reflects the subjective experience of end users for wireless service. In addition, the energy efficiency is an increasingly important problem with the explosive growth in the amount of wireless terminals and nodes. Hence, a QoE-aware energy efficiency maximization based joint user access selection and power allocation approach is proposed to solve the problem. We transform the joint allocation process to an optimization of energy efficiency by establishing an energy efficiency model, and then the optimization problem is solved by chaotic clone immune algorithm (CCIA). Numerical simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm can efficiently and reliably improve the QoE and ensure high energy efficiency of networks.

  • Energy harvesting from environment can make the energy constrained systems such as sensor networks to sustain their lifetimes. However, environmental energy is highly variable with time, location, and other factors. Unlike the existing solutions, we solved this problem by allowing the sensor nodes with mobilizer to move in search of energy and recharge from remote energy station. In this paper we present and analyze a new harvesting aware framework for mobile sensor networks with remote energy station. The framework consists of energy model, motion control system and data transfer protocol. Among them, the objective of our data transfer protocol is to route a data packet geographically towards the target region and at the same time balance the residual energy and the link connectivity on nodes with energy harvesting. Our results along with simulation can be used for further studies and provide certain guideline for realistic development of such systems.

  • In ad hoc networks, the limited battery capacity of nodes affects a lifetime of network Recently, a large variety of power-aware routing protocols have been proposed to improve an energy efficiency of ad hoc networks. Existing power-aware routing protocols basically consider the residual battery capacity and transmission power of nodes in route discovery process. This paper proposes a new power-aware routing protocol, TDPR(Traffic load & lifetime Deviation based Power-aware Routing protocol), that does not only consider residual battery capacity and transmission power, but also the traffic load of nodes and deviation among the lifetimes of nodes. It helps to extend the entire lifetime of network and to achieve load balancing. Simulations using ns-2[14] show the performance of the proposed routing protocol in terms of the load balancing of the entire network, the consumed energy capacity of nodes, and an path's reliability TDPR has maximum 72% dead nodes less than AODV[4], and maximum 58% dead nodes less than PSR[9]. And TDPR consumes residual energy capacity maximum 29% less than AODV, maximum 15% less than PSR. Error messages are sent maximum 38% less than PSR, and maximum 41% less than AODV.

  • In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient MAC(Medium Access Control) protocol for processing context information in ubiquitous sensor network environments. CASMAC(Context Aware Sensor MAC) use context information for energy-efficient operation and its operation principle is as follows. First, we make scenarios with possible prediction for CASMAC. And then we save setted context information in server. When event occur at specific sensor node, and then it send three times sample data to server. According to context information, server process sample data. If server process sample data with event, it receive continuous data from event occur node by a transmission request signal. And then server send data transmission stop signal to event occur node when it do not need to data. If server process sample data with no event, it have not reply. Through we make energy consumption tables and an energy consumption model, we simulate analysis of CASMAC performance. In a result, we gains about 5.7 percents energy reduction compared to SMAC.

  • Ad hoc networks are a type of mobile network that function without any fixed infrastructure. One of the weaknesses of ad hoc network is that a route used between a source and a destination is to break during communication. To solve this problem, one approach consists of selecting routes whose nodes have the most stable link cost. This paper proposes a method for improving the low power distributed MAC. This method is based on the context awareness of the each nodes energy in clustering. We propose to select a new scheme to optimize energy conserving between the clustering nodes in MANET. And this architecture scheme would use context-aware considering the energy related information such as energy, RF strength, relative distances between each node in mobile ad hoc networks. The proposed networks scheme could get better improve the awareness for data to achieve and performance on their clustering establishment and messages transmission. Also, by using the context aware computing, according to the condition and the rules defined, the sensor nodes could adjust their behaviors correspondingly to improve the network routing.
