  • Optical disk technology with a laser beam for data recording and retrieval is one of the most promising route for high density information storage in multimedia era. As the storage density and data transfer rates are increased, mechanical issues, mainly noise and vibration, become critical. Rubber materials are extensively used in various machine design application, mainly for vibration/shock/noise control devices. Over the years an enormous effort has been put into developing procedures to provide properties of rubber components with complex shape and under pre-deformed state. In this paper, non-linear large deformations of a rubber mount for optical disk drive were investigated using the finite element method. A tension test of rubber material was performed, to calculate a strain energy function. According to the pre-deformed state, the variation of rubber mount stiffness were calculated and the reliability of numerical results were checked by compared with the measuring the deflection values. Also, the effects of the pre-deformed rubber mount on the system dynamic characteristics were investigated and the relation between the static stiffness variation of rubber mount and the natural frequence variation of system was discussed.

  • Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a promising carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology whose efficiency and cost primarily relies on the oxygen carrier materials used. In this paper, gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC, Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95) was added as a promoter to improve the oxygen transfer rate of MgMnO3-δ oxygen carrier materials. Increasing GDC content significantly increased the oxygen transfer rate of MgMnO3-δ-GDC composites for the reduction reaction due to an increase in the surface adsorption of CH4 via oxygen vacancies formed on the surface of the GDC. On the other hand, the oxygen transfer rate for the oxidation reaction decreased linearly with increasing GDC content due to the oxygen storage ability of GDC. Adsorbed oxygen molecules preferentially insert themselves into oxygen vacancies of the GDC lattice rather than reacting with (Mg,Mn)O to form MgMnO3-δ during the oxidation reaction.

  • This study compared microbial load, texturre, histological properties, and sensory characteristics of gamma-irradiated (20 kGy) Kimchi and freeze-dried Kimchi under condition; of long-tenn storage. immediately after irradiation, no aerobic bacteria were detected, but microbial load of freeze-dried Kimchi decreased by only 1 log cycle in comparision with the nonirradiated control sample. The firmness of irradiated Kimchi was significantly higher than that of rehydrated freeze-dried Kimchi (p<0.05). Scanning electron microscopy showed collapse of the microstructure in epidermis tissues of rehydrated Kimchi. 'The sensory scores for color, texture, and taste of irradiated Kimchi were higher than those for rehydrated freeze-dried Kimchi.

  • The physicochemical properties of dried oak mushrooms were investigated to determine the comparative effects of ethylene oxide (E.O) fumigation and gamma irradiation with doses at 1 and 5 kGy. The total amino acid content was relatively stable in irradiated groups in comparison with the control. Treatments with gamma irradiation did not effect the content of reducing sugar but caused en increase in free sugars, such as mannitol, arabitol and trehalose. There were no significant differences in concentrations of minerals. The amount of water and fat soluble pigments and the rancidity of the samples stored at $25^{\circ}C$ increased with increasing the storage time and the relative humidity, and the tendency to change was more apparent in E.O. fumigated sample than gamma irradiated one.

  • Terpolymer syrups were photopolymerized from 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, 2-hydroxylethyl acrylate and isobornyl acrylate to prepare acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs). After polymerization, various crosslinkers as 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA), poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA, Mn = 250, 575, and 700) were added and then UV-irradiated to prepare the semi-IPN type PSAs. Their adhesion performance and storage modulus (G') were strongly dependent on their chemical structure and molecular weight of the crosslinkers. Optical properties such as transmittance (> 92.5 %), haze (< 1.0 %) and color-difference (< 0.3) of PSAs samples were not affected by crosslinker types used in this study.

  • Microbiological and sensory qualities of Musaengchae prepared with gamma-irradiated red pepper powder were investigated during storage at $4^{\circ}C$. Total aerobic bacteria in non-irradiated raw materials prior to Musangchae preparation were 6.71 log CFU/g in red pepper powder, 3.39 log CFU/g in radish, 2.21 log CFU/g in scallion, and 2.10 log CFU/g in garlic, respectively. Coliforms(2.15 log CFU/g) were detected only in red pepper powder, and not in Musangchae to which gamma-irradiated red pepper powder. None of pH, Hunter's color value, or sensory properties were significantly affected by addition of irradiated red pepper powder. These results suggest that addition of such powder, after irradiation with less then 10 kGy, could improve Musangchae microbiological safety without changing the sensory or physical qualities.

  • Offshore subsurface storage of $CO_2$ is regarded as one of the most promising options to response severe climate change. Marine geological storage of $CO_2$ is to capture $CO_2$ from major point sources, to transport to the storage sites and to store $CO_2$ into the offshore subsurface geological structure such as the depleted gas reservoir and deep sea saline aquifer. Since 2005, we have developed relevant technologies for marine geological storage of $CO_2$. Those technologies include possible storage site surveys and basic designs for $CO_2$ transport and storage processes. To design a reliable $CO_2$ marine geological storage system, we devised a hypothetical scenario and used a numerical simulation tool to study its detailed processes. The process of transport $CO_2$ from the onshore capture sites to the offshore storage sites can be simulated with a thermodynamic equation of state. Before going to main calculation of process design, we compared and analyzed the relevant equation of states. To evaluate the predictive accuracies of the examined equation of states, we compare the results of numerical calculations with experimental reference data. Up to now, process design for this $CO_2$ marine geological storage has been carried out mainly on pure $CO_2$. Unfortunately the captured $CO_2$ mixture contains many impurities such as $N_2$, $O_2$, Ar, $H_{2}O$, $SO_{\chi}$, $H_{2}S$. A small amount of impurities can change the thermodynamic properties and then significantly affect the compression, purification and transport processes. This paper analyzes the major design parameters that are useful for constructing onshore and offshore $CO_2$ transport systems. On the basis of a parametric study of the hypothetical scenario, we suggest relevant variation ranges for the design parameters, particularly the flow rate, diameter, temperature, and pressure.

  • Gamma irradiation was applied to develop fermented shrimp product with lower salt concentration, high sensory quality and storage stability. Shrimp was prepared with 15 and 20% of salt and fermented at $15^{\circ}C$. The sample was irradiated for 15% added salt at the 4th week and for 20% at the 6th week during fermentation with 0, 5 and 10 kGy absorbed doses. The irradiation was applied at optimum stage of fermentation determined when the content of amino nitrogen(AN) arrived approximately 400 mg%. Chemical properties such as amino nitrogen(AN), volatile base nitrogen(VBN), trimethylamine(TMA) and neutral protease activity were examined during whole fermentation. The AN, VBN, TMA and protease activity were not affected immediately after gamma irradiation. The more NaCl concentrations and irradiation dose, the less content of chemical compounds and protease activity was found. From the results of chemical properties, it was concluded that fermented shrimp with 15% of salt and irradiated at 10 kGy before optimum fermentation, or 20% and 5 kGy or above were maintained the sound quality during storage compared with the control.

  • The work presented in this report was a detailed comparative study of the electrochemical response exhibited by graphite anodes in Li-ion batteries having different physical features. A comprehensive morphological and physical characterization was carried out for these graphite samples via X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Later, the electrochemical performance was analyzed using galvanostatic charge/discharge testing and the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique for these graphite samples as negative electrode materials in battery operation. The results demonstrated that a material having a higher crystalline order exhibits enhanced electrochemical properties when evaluated in terms of rate-capability performance. All these materials were investigated at high C-rates ranging from 0.1C up to 10C. Such improved response was attributed to the crystalline morphology providing short layers, which facilitate rapid Li+ ions diffusivity and electron transport during the course of battery operation. The values obtained for the electrical conductivity of these graphite anodes support this possible explanation.
