Peripheral Serotonin: a New Player in Systemic Energy Homeostasis

  • Whole body energy balance is achieved through the coordinated regulation of energy intake and energy expenditure in various tissues including liver, muscle and adipose tissues. A positive energy imbalance by excessive energy intake or insufficient energy expenditure results in obesity and related metabolic diseases. Although there have been many obesity treatment trials aimed at the reduction of energy intake, these strategies have achieved only limited success because of their associated adverse effects. An ancient neurotransmitter, serotonin is among those traditional pharmacological targets for anti-obesity treatment because it exhibits strong anorectic effect in the brain. However, recent studies suggest the new functions of peripheral serotonin in energy homeostasis ranging from the endocrine regulation by gut-derived serotonin to the autocrine/paracrine regulation by adipocyte-derived serotonin. Here, we discuss the role of serotonin in the regulation of energy homeostasis and introduce peripheral serotonin as a possible target for anti-obesity treatment.

4MW 에너지저장장치의 전력계통 주파수 조정 운전제어를 위한 실증 (Demonstration to Operate and Control Frequency Regulation of Power System by 4MW Energy Storage System)

  • Operation and control system has been installed and tested to use energy storage system(ESS) for frequency regulation at 4MW class of ESS demonstration facility installed at Jeju island, Korea in 2013. Simulation tests were performed by programing language C# for power system of Jeju island to develop control algorithm. Site simulation tests were performed in control system itself without connecting power system and energy storage system. Control algorithm was coded, modified and tested to load to controller and communication system and human-machine interface were developed and tested in the process of simulation tests. After similar results to that of simulation tests by programing language were obtained, power system and energy storage system demonstration facility were connected to control system by communication system. Energy storage system for frequency regulation was tested for actual frequency and simulation frequency. The site tests showed the similar results to that of simulation tests and the control systems is possible to be operated for frequency regulation. Faster response of energy storage system for frequency regulation, less costs and less capacity of energy storage systems which cover for frequency regulation of power plants. It is expected that more studies for time-reduction and time-delay elements can make less capacity of energy storage system cover more role of frequency regulation of power plants.

Development of the Control System for Fast-Responding Frequency Regulation in Power Systems using Large-Scale Energy Storage Systems

  • Energy storage systems (ESS) can be used to provide frequency regulation services in a power system to replace traditional frequency regulation power plants. Battery ESS, in particular, can provide "fast-responding frequency regulation," wherein the facility can respond immediately and accurately to the frequency regulation signal sent by the system operator. This paper presents the development and the trial run results of a frequency regulation control system that uses large-scale ESS for use in a large power system. The control system was developed initially for the 4 MW ESS demonstration facility in Jocheon Jeju Island, and was further developed for use in the 28 MW ESS facility at the Seo-Anseong substation and the 24 MW ESS facility at the Shin-Yongin substation to provide frequency regulation services within mainland Korea. The ESS facility in Seo-Anseong substation responds to a sudden drop in frequency via governor-free control, while the ESS facility in Shin-Yongin responds via automatic generator control (AGC).

An Investigation Into the Relationship Between Metabolic Responses and Energy Regulation in Antibody-Producing Cell

  • Energy-efficient metabolic responses were often noted in high-productive cultures. To better understand these metabolic responses, an investigation into the relationship between metabolic responses and energy regulation was conducted via a comparative analysis among cultures with different energy source supplies. Both glycolysis and glutaminolysis were studied through the kinetic analyses of major extracellular metabolites concerning the fast and slow cell growth stages, respectively, as well as the time-course profiles of intracellular metabolites. In three cultures showing distinct antibody productivities, the amino acid metabolism and energy state were further examined. Both the transition of lactate from production to consumption and steady intracellular pools of pyruvate and lactate were observed to be correlated with efficient energy regulation. In addition, an efficient utilization of amino acids as the replenishment for the TCA cycle was also found in the cultures with upregulated energy metabolism. It was further revealed that the inefficient energy regulation would cause low cell productivity based on the comparative analysis of cell growth and productivity in cultures having distinct energy regulation.

  • Efforts are made to examine the role nuclear energy under the international carbon emissions regulation. To do so, an econometric model for energy demand and supply is developed. Here, several scenarios on the regulation are assumed and then each scenario is analyzed by using this model. This model also makes it Possible to analyze the effect of carbon tax. The results show that share nuclear increases up to 60% in 2020 Instead 45% makes GDP rise by 1.9% while the electricity price lower by 46% in carbon emission regulation.

주파수조정용 배터리 에너지저장장치 운전방법의 개발과 적용 (Development and Application of Operation Methods of Battery Energy Storage System for Frequency Regulation)

  • Current research and development efforts and other projects for energy storage systems (ESS) have recently been gaining attention. This is due to the many applications where ESS, particularly batteries, can be used. Among these are peak shaving, frequency regulation, and stabilization of renewable energy output. KEPCO has completed the construction and demonstration of a 4-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) located in Jeju City to verify its practicability in the power grid. KEPCO Research Institute has also been developing technology for the commercialization of BESS, and has been conducting a trial run of a 52-MW ESS (28MW + 24MW of Seo-Anseong and Shin-Yongin substations) constructed in 2014 for frequency regulation. This paper discusses the development of operation methods, as well as an operation user interface, for the safe operation and monitoring of BESS used for frequency regulation in a power system. Included are operation and simulation methods for various normal and transient frequency situations that can be experienced by a power system. Also discussed are the results obtained after applying these methods to the 4-MW BESS and the 52-MW ESS, both used for frequency regulation. The technology in this paper will be applied to 500MW ESS for frequency regulation of KEPCO by 2017. It is expected that this technology helps a safe and reliable operation and control of ESS for frequency regulation through its continuous upgrade.

  • This paper presents a new approach for optimal dispatch of energy and frequency regulation reserve considering contingency in a competitive electricity market. It is necessary to introduce the reserve market with the spot energy market for operating efficiently and obtaining the security of the electricity market. However, the reserve market is closely connected with the energy market since the energy and reserve are produced from the same resources. Thus, it is inevitable to co-optimize the energy and ancillary service for efficient operation of energy and ancillary service market. Therefore, this paper proposes a new method for optimal dispatch of energy and frequency regulation reserve considering n-1 contingency of generator and transmission line using constraints and sensitivity based on AC power flow To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the numerical studies have been performed for 5-bus sample system and modified IEEE 14-bus system.

데이터센터 냉방시스템 고효율화를 위한 국내 수열에너지 보급 제도 개선에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Improvement of the Water Source Energy Distribution Regulation for High Efficient Data Center Cooling System in Korea)

  • In this study, the current regulation of the water source energy, one of the renewable energy, was analyzed, and the improvement plan for the high efficient data center cooling system was suggested. In the improvement plan, the design and construction guidelines of the water source energy system permit to adopt the cooling and heating system with or without heat pump. In addition, it should also include the system operated in the cooling mode only all year-round. The domestic test standards to consider the water source operating conditions should be developed. Especially, it is highly recommended that the test standards to include the system with forced cooling and free cooling modes related with the enhanced data center cooling system adopting the water source energy.

  • System to automate the trial-run of energy storage system for frequency regulation was developed and demonstrated. Basic strategy was developed on the basis of trial-run procedure and verified in the computer simulation tool. The algorithm was developed and coded for 4MW trial-run automation system. 4MW trial-run automation system was connected to 4MW energy storage system for frequency regulation in Jocheon substation of Jeju city and demonstrated. 24MW trial-run automation system was developed on the basis of 4MW trial-run automation system and verified by operation system for 24MW energy storage system for frequency regulation. The operation system has own simulation model of energy storage system and power system. The verification was performed to improve the system in the view of user. 24MW trial-run automation system was demonstrated in 32MW Ul-san and 36MW Non-gong energy storage system. All tests of trial-run was done by manual and first they ware taken 1 week with no trial-run automation system. The manual trial-run tests were taken by maximum three times. Trial-run test by trial-run automation system was taken 2 days. The system helps reduce the trial-run test period and improve the accuracy of tests.

환경규제가 재생에너지 및 에너지절감산업의 수출에 미치는 영향 : 한국과 일본의 비교연구 (The Impact of Environmental Regulation on Korea and Japan's Exports of Renewable Energy and Energy Saving Industry)

  • 'Porter Hypothesis'는 환경규제가 강한 국가에서 재생에너지 및 환경규제 관련 산업의 기술개발이 촉진되어 해당산업의 수출이 증가한다고 환경규제와 무역의 관계를 설명하고 있다. 이점에 착안하여 수입국의 환경규제가 우리나라의 재생에너지 및 에너지절감산업의 수출에 미치는 영향을 중력모형을 이용한 실증분석을 통하여 분석한다. 또한 환경선진국인 일본의 경우에도 같은 분석을 시행하여 우리나라와 비교한다. 추정 결과에 의하면 도출된 환경변수의 계수값이 부분적으로는 유의하지 않은 결과가 나왔지만 전반적으로 한국 및 일본의 재생에너지 및 에너지절감산업에 있어 환경과 수출과의 관계에서 'Porter Hypothesis'가 성립됨을 보였다. 또한 한국과 일본의 환경변수의 계수값을 비교한 결과, 본 연구에서 적용한 세 가지 환경변수의 계수에 대한 한국의 절대값이 일본의 것보다 연도와 환경변수의 종류에 관계없이 크게 나왔다. 이는 재생 에너지 및 에너지절감 분야에서 우수한 기술력을 바탕으로 국제경쟁력을 갖춘 일본 기업들의 제품과 기술력이 환경규제가 강한 국가의 시장에서도 활용되고 있기 때문이다. 반면 한국 기업은 아직 일본에 비하여 국제시장에서 다소 경쟁력이 떨어지기 때문에 수입국의 환경규제가 강할수록 수출의 감소폭이 일본에 비하여 클 수밖에 없다. 이러 한 실증분석 결과는 우리의 기술 수준이 아직 선진국 수준에 이르지 못하고 있음을 보여주는 간접적인 증거이다.
