  • Hydrogen isotopes accountancy and storage are important functions in a nuclear fusion fuel cycle. The hydrogen isotopes are safely stored in metal hydride beds. The tritium inventory of the bed is determined from the decay heat of tritium. The decay heat is measured by circulating helium through the metal hydride bed and measuring the resultant temperature increase of the helium flow. We are reporting our preliminary experimental results on the hydrogen isotopes accountancy and storage performance in a metal hydride bed.

  • The buckling characteristics of cylindrical shells with a circular hole, under axially compressed loads, have been analyzed and the results have been compared with existed experimental results. Deflection function with decay factor is assumed, and stress distribution around a circular hole in tensioned infinite plate is used for formulating buckling energy function. Applying Rayleigh Ritz procedure to this energy function, characteristic equation of eigenvalue problem is determined. Buckling load is defined by the minimum value of eigenvalues calculated according to several decay factors, and as the radius ratios of a circular hole (a/R) and shell thickness ratios (R/t) are varied, the reducing characteristics of buckling load are studied. As a result, buckling loads are reduced by about 50% according to some radius ratios ($a/R{\geq}0.15$) of circular hole and are not nearly affected by shell thickness ratio(R/t).

  • The photoisomerization of 5-styryl-1,3-dimethyluracil is studied with nanosecond laser flash photolysis technique at room temperature. The laser flash photolysis of E-isomer produces the transient absorption spectrum regarded as the triplet-triplet absorption, but the transient absorption of Z-isomer does not show the typical decay curve, probably due to the facile photocyclization reaction during the laser flash photolysis. Using the energy transfer method on nanosecond laser spectroscopy, the energy of the lowest triplet state for E isomer is estimated to lie between 41.8 and 47 kcal/mol. The triplet lifetime for E-isomer obtained from the decay curve of the transient absorption is ca. 93ns. The $S_1 → T_1$ intersystem crossing of E-isomer on direct excitation is relatively inefficient at room temperature supporting the singlet mechanism for direct photoisomerization.

  • Scaled brick masonry panels were tested under cyclic unialxial compression loading to evaluate its deformation characteristics. An envelope stress - strain curves, a common point curves and stability point curves were obtained for various cyclic test conditions. Loops of the stress-strain hysteresis were used to determine the energy dissipation for each cycle. Empirical expressions were proposed for the relations between energy dissipation and envelope and residual strains. These relations indicated that the decay of masonry strength starts at about two-third of peak stress.

  • Massive environmental monitoring has been conducted continuously since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power accident in March of 2011 by different monitoring methods that have different features together with migration studies of radiocesium in diverse environments. These results have clarified the characteristics of radiological environments and their temporal change around the Fukushima site. At three months after the accident, multiple radionuclides including radiostrontium and plutonium were detected in many locations; and it was confirmed that radiocesium was most important from the viewpoint of long-term exposure. Radiation levels around the Fukushima site have decreased greatly over time. The decreasing trend was found to change variously according to local conditions. The air dose rates in environments related to human living have decreased faster than expected from radioactive decay by a factor of 2-3 on average; those in pure forest have decreased more closely to physical decay. The main causes of air dose rate reduction were judged to be radioactive decay, movement of radiocesium in vertical and horizontal directions, and decontamination. Land-use categories and human activities have significantly affected the reduction tendency. Difference in the air dose rate reduction trends can be explained qualitatively according to the knowledge obtained in radiocesium migration studies; whereas, the quantitative explanation for individual sites is an important future challenge. The ecological half-lives of air dose rates have been evaluated by several researchers, and a short-term half-life within 1 year was commonly observed in the studies. An empirical model for predicting air dose rate distribution was developed based on statistical analysis of an extensive car-borne survey dataset, which enabled the prediction with confidence intervals. Different types of contamination maps were integrated to better quantify the spatial data. The obtained data were used for extended studies such as for identifying the main reactor that caused the contamination of arbitrary regions and developing standard procedures for environmental measurement and sampling. Annual external exposure doses for residents who intended to return to their homes were estimated as within a few millisieverts. Different forms of environmental data and knowledge have been provided for wide spectrum of people. Diverse aspects of lessons learned from the Fukushima accident, including practical ones, must be passed on to future generations.

  • A $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+},Dy^{3+}$ phosphor powder with stuffed tridymite structure was synthesized by glycine-nitrate combustion method. The luminescence, formation process and microstructure of the phosphor powder were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The XRD patterns show that the as-synthesized $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+},Dy^{3+}$ phosphor was an amorphous phase. However, a crystalline $SrAl_2O_4 $ phase was formed by calcining at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 4h. From the SEM analysis, also, it was found that the as-synthesized $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+},Dy^{3+}$ phosphor was in irregular porous particles of about 50 ${\mu}m$, while the calcined phosphor was aggregated in spherical particles with radius of about 0.5 ${\mu}m$. The emission spectrum of as-synthesized $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+},Dy^{3+}$ phosphor did not appear, due to the amorphous phase. However, the emission spectrum of the calcined phosphor was observed at 520 nm (2.384eV); it showed green emission peaking, in the range of 450~650 nm. The excitation spectrum of the $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+},Dy^{3+}$ phosphor exhibits a maximum peak intensity at 360 nm (3.44eV) in the range of 250~480 nm. After the removal of the pulse Xe-lamp excitation (360 nm), also, the decay time for the emission spectrum was very slow, which shows the excellent longphosphorescent property of the phosphor, although the decay time decreased exponentially.

  • Spent nuclear fuel generated at nuclear power plants must be safely stored during interim storage periods. A dry storage cask to safely store the spent nuclear fuel should be able to adequately emit the decay heat from the spent nuclear fuel. Therefore, heat removal tests using a half scale dry storage cask have been performed to estimate the heat transfer characteristics of a dry storage cask under normal, off-normal, and accident conditions. In the normal condition, the heat transfer rate to an ambient atmosphere by convective air through a passive heat removal system reached 83%. Accordingly, the passive heat removal system is designed well and works adequately. In the off-normal condition, the influence of a half blockage in the inlet on the temperature appears minimal. In the accident condition, the temperature rose for 12 hours after the accident, but the temperature rise steadied after 36 hours.

  • The flow and heat transfer characteristics of the ex-vessel core melt (corium) were investigated using a commercial CFD code along with the experimental data on the spreading of corium available in the literature (VULCANO VE-U7 test). In the numerical simulation of the unsteady two-phase flow, the volume-of-fluid model was applied for the spreading and interfacial surface formation of corium with the surrounding air. The effects of the key parameters were evaluated for the corium spreading, including the radiation, decay heat, temperature-dependent viscosity and initial temperature of corium. The results showed a reasonable trend of corium progression influenced by the changes in the radiation, decay heat, temperature-dependent viscosity and initial temperature of corium. The modeling of the viscosity appropriate for corium and the radiative heat transfer was critical, since the front progression and temperature profiles were strongly dependent on the models. Further development is required for the code to consider the formation of crust on the surfaces of corium and the interaction with the substrate.
