Present work aims to establish the countermeasure for the better maintenance and preservation of insular floristic diversity at the South Sea of Jeollanamdo Province, ROK, where unique ecosystems are under threat due to climate change, anthropogenic disturbance and habitat destruction. Numerous flora reports from 15 inhabited islands and 60 uninhabited islands as well as field survey data are collated for the compilation of floristic data base and island biogeographical analysis. Out of the 1,940 vascular plant species from 180 families occurring in studies areas, 30.1 percentage or 584 plant species are physiognomically belonging to arboreal plants. Average number of species at individual island is numbered about 222 species, but it varies from about 591 species at the inhabited islands to 129 species at the uninhabited islands. Only 0.15 percentage of species with high proportion above 0.9 in its relative occurrence rate occurs at 68 islands and it includes three species, such as Pinus thunbergii, Eurya japonica and Pteridium aquilinum var. latiusculum. However, about 68 percentage of plant species occurring in study area is confined their distribution to less than seven islands. Presence of high proportion of notable plants in small islands, i.e., 10 critically endangered species compared with 5.5 species in average, 9 endangered species (average 4.2 spp.) at Sonjookdo, and 7 critically endangered species, 8 endangered species at Sokomundo may due to existence of diverse geological and topographical environmental diversity as well as lower human population density and remoteness from the mainland. Since island is small in size and geographically isolated, minor environmental and ecological burdens can cause the critical damages to the diversity of flora and vegetation, urgent island biogeographical research is needed for the scientific conservation and management of island biodiversity.

Sustainable habitats play a significant role in determining the survival and habitat preservation of endangered species. To conserve the endangered species Iris dichotoma Pall. and its habitat in Taeanhaean National Park, we collected seeds from a natural population and germinated and propagated them in a greenhouse. In 2019, the propagated individuals of I. dichotoma were transplanted at two study sites in Taeanhaean National Park. After conservation translocation, annual monitoring was conducted from 2020 to 2022, and factors related to the survival and growth of I. dichotoma (clonal propagation rate [%], the flowering rate [%], the population density [individual/m2], the maximum leaf bundle length [height; cm], the maximum leaf bundle width [cm], and the pedicel length [cm]) were measured. According to the results of the monitoring of the flowering and fruiting periods for three years after transplantation, 82.4% of individuals in total were found to have survived. During 2020 to 2022, the mean population density (individual/m2) increased from 0.36 to 0.42 and the size of the leaf bundle length and the width both decreased compared to the corresponding figures in 2019 (p < 0.05). According to the findings here, the transplanted population of I. dichotoma is considered to have adapted successfully to its new site in Taeanhaean National Park.
Lilium cernum Komarvo. is an important endangered plant belonging to the family Liliaceae. A method was developed for the rapid micropropagation of L. cernum through plant regeneration from bulb scales explant-derived calli. The bulb scales segments were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1.0, $3.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ kinetin and 0, 0.1, 0.5, $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA or 2,4-D for callus induction. In media with $0.5{\sim}3.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ kinetin and $0.1{\sim}1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA and 2,4-D, 95~100% of explants produced callus. They were then transferred to MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of NAA (0, 0.01, 0.05 and $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) in combination with BA (0, 1.0 and $2.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) for bulbet formation. Bulbet induction (78%), weight (468 mg) and size (15.5 mm) were obtained the highest on MS medium containing $2.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA and $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA. In vitro frequency of plant regeneration was not significantly treated in strength of MS and sucrose concentration. Chlorophyll contents in 1/2MS with $50g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ sucrose treatments were higher than those in control and another treatment. This in vitro propagation protocol will be useful for conservation and mass propagation of this endangered plant.
Iris odesanensis Y.N. Lee is one kind of species among 54 endangered plant species designated by the Ministry of Environment in Korea. It is very rare native plant throughout the country. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the native Iris odesanensis in Mt. Naeyon for their distribution and ecological characteristics. They were mostly distributed mid-slope of the mountain from 443m to 498m altitude. They were located lower part of valley and provided enough humid condition. They had proper light and humidity conditions as they faced south south west, south south east, and south. They were also located at the places deciduous woody plants were distributed for proper light conditions for spring blooming. Iris flowered to use light at the period before the trees thickly covered with foliage. However this unfavorable light condition caused low percentage as 7.04% of blooming individuals in this study. In herbaceous, Vioia chaerophylloides(Regel) W. Hocker, Carex siderosticta Hance, Erythronium japonicum Decne., Oxalis obtriangulata Max., Hepatica asiatica Nakai, Lilium tsingtauense Gilg et cetera were appeared well. We propose that proper pruning of upper branches of the deciduous trees is needed for suitable light condition of management of native sites.
The flora of Mt. Kum.lung(80 lm) was Investigated to compare the flora of Mt. Hwang-Ryung, Mt. Cheon-Hwang, Mt. Chulseo. The vascular plants, collected from March 1995 to Oct., 1996, were consisted of a total 564 taxa: 103 families, 312 genera, 493 species, 1 subspecies. 66 varieties and 4 forms. The Korean endemic plants of this area were 11 taxa, the alplan and endangered plants were 29 taxa, the special wild plants designatlrlg by Enoronmental Agency were 2 taxa and the alpian plants were 18 taxa. Because many plants, being necessary to conserve, are distributed Kumjung, but if development is indespensable. destruction of natural ecosystem must be minimized.
Ceratopteris thalictroides is a semi-aquatic fern with a circumtropical distribution. Because this species is designated internationally on the IUCN Red List as requiring at least some concern, Korean populations are of great concern for the species' long-term survival, as they are at the northern limit of the species distribution. To establish an effective conservation strategy for those populations at the genetic level, we used the Mi-Seq platform to develop three sets of 25 polymorphic microsatellite markers for C. thalictroides, which is endangered in Korea. In populations sampled from Busan and Gochang, the number of alleles ranged from 2 to 13 (average of 5.64), and plants presented an expected heterozygosity of 0.000 to 0.860. These markers will be useful for evaluating the genetic status and conserving Korean populations of C. thalictroides more effectively.
The floristic characteristics and ecological conservation measures for the plant resources of the Mt. Kumjung(801m), Pusan, Korea were discussed. The field works was done for about twenty times in nine major areas from March, 1995 to Octover, 1996. The total number of vascular plants In this area were summarized as 103 families, 312 genera, 493 species and 564 kinds. The fourteen kinds of artificially planted, ten kinds of Korean endemics and twenty-nine kinds of Korean rare and endangered species in the area were revised and compiled in the list. The flora of the area were categorized into the South-coast put of the Korean Region, where the species such as Platycarya strobilacea, Quercug serrata, Eutya japonica, Camellia japonica, Trachelosperm urn asia talcum vu . in termedium, Quercus acu tissima were roles as major floristic components in the Korean Region and endemized in the south-cosat part of Korea. The natural communities such as Pinus thunbergii Community, Quercus mongolica community, Cupinus laxiflora Community, Wistria floribunda Community and swamp vegetation in Bukmun area as well as upland grassland at the summit of Kodangpong were represented for their floristic values in the area. The thirty kinds of medichinal plant, fifteen kinds of ornamental plants and thirteen kinds of edible plants are faced potentially in endangered from the outrageous collections by the local peoples. The action plan for the conservation management of the area which enables sustainable use by the local peoples must have established in the near feature.
Menyanthes trifoliata L., a heterostyly plant, is an endangered species in Korea. Floral morphology has been published for M. trifoliata, but few works have concentrated on pollen dimorphism differences accompanied by floral dimorphism. Here, we conducted a comparative morphological study of two morphs to investigate a dimorphism system with Korean populations. Pollen morphological characteristics were observed with a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. For the pin type, pollen size is 36.01 ± 2.01 ㎛, whereas for the thrum type it is 41.28 ± 2.58 ㎛ in terms of the equatorial diameter. The two morphs have a small apocolpium field at 5.62 ± 0.30 for the pin type and 6.24 ± 0.70 for the thrum type. The configuration of the aperture was tricolpate with a striate ridge in the two morphs. However, they have different pollen shapes and sizes, stigma shapes, and apocolpium sizes. M. trifoliata only has different pollen sizes and shapes between European populations and Korean populations. Nevertheless, Korean populations also show pollen dimorphism correlated with their floral dimorphism.
As a part of the on-going effort to conserve endangered Scrophularia takesimensis Nakai in Korea, its genetic structure and diversity from 3 population, consisted of 14 subpopulations in Ulleung Island were analyzed using RAPD band patterns. Out of 60 primers tested, 33 generated amplified bands with its genome, including 149 polymorphic and 67 monomorphic bands. The highest number (146) was found in northern population, especially, 64 in HY subpopulation; the smallest (40) in eastern population. An examination of its genetic structure with AMOVA revealed that about 60% of all variations could be assigned to among subpopulations within populations. Population differentiation among populations and subpopulations is seriously going now because of habitat fragmentation due to human activities, such as road and small port construction. Although the habitats of S. takesimensis in Ulleung Island, Korea are disappeared at an alarming rate, significant levels of genetic variation still exist at species level, and population level, especially northern population. Therefore, three conservation strategies should be needed urgently; 1) preservation of populations as it stands, 2) establishment of recovery plan to connect population and subpopulations genetically, and 3) long-term monitoring.
