The wireless communication system adopts an appropriate retransmission scheme on each system protocol layer to improve reliability of data transmission. In each system protocol layer, the retransmission scheme operates in independently other layers and operates based on the parameters without reference to end-to-end performance of wireless communication system. For this reason, it is difficult to design the optimal system parameters that satisfy the QoS requirements for each service class. Thus, the performance analysis of wireless communication system is needed to design the optimal system parameters according to the end-to-end QoS requirements for each service class. In this paper, we derive the mathematical model to formulate the end-to-end performance of wireless communication system. We also evaluate the performance at the MAC and transport layers in terms of average spectral efficiency and average transmission delay. Based on the results of performance evaluations, we design the optimal system parameters according to the QoS requirements of service classes. From the results, the HARQ combined with AMC is appropriate for the delay-sensitive service and the ARQ combined with AMC is appropriate for a service that is insensitive to transmission delay. Also, the TCP can be applied for the delay-insensitive service only.
This paper proposes a flow-based admission control algorithm through an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) based Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network for multiple service class environments of Integrated Service (IntServ) and Differentiated Service (DiffServ). We propose the Integrated Packet Scheduler to accommodate IntServ and Best Effort traffic through the DiffServ-aware MPLS core network. The numerical results of the proposed algorithm achieve reliable delay-bounded Quality of Service (QoS) performance and reduce the blocking probability of high priority service in the DiffServ model. We show the performance behaviors of IntServ traffic negotiated by end users when their packets are delivered through the DiffServ-aware MPLS core network. We also show that ATM shortcut connections are well tuned with guaranteed QoS service. We validate the proposed method by numerical analysis of its performance in such areas as throughput, end-to-end delay and path utilization.
Nowadays, the issue of congestion control in high-speed communication networks becomes critical in view of the bandwidth-delay products for efficient data flow. In particular, the fact that the congestion is often accompanied by the data flow from the high-speed link to low-speed link is important with respect to the stability of closed-loop congestion control. The Virtual-Connection Network (VCN) in Gigabit Ethernet networks is a packet-switching based network capable of implementing cell- based connection, link-by-link flow-controlled connection, and single- or multi-destination virtual connections. VCN described herein differ from the virtual channel in ATM literature in that VCN have link-by-link flow control and can be of multi-destination. VCNs support both connection-oriented and connectionless data link layer traffic. Therefore, the worst collision scenario in Ethernet CSMA/CD with virtual collision brings about end-to-end delay. Gigabit Ethernet networks based on CSMA/CD results in non-deterministic behavior because its media access rules are based on random probability. Hence, it is difficult to obtain any sound mathematical formulation for congestion control without employing random processes or fluid-flow models. In this paper, an analytical method for the design of a congestion control scheme is proposed based on Smith's principle to overcome instability accompanied with the increase of end-to-end delays as well as to avoid cell losses. To this end, mathematical analysis is provided such that the proposed control scheme guarantees the performance improvement with respect to bandwidth and latency for selected network links with different propagation delays. In addition, guaranteed bandwidth is to be implemented by allowing individual stations to burst several frames at a time without intervening round-trip idle time.

This paper is related to a performance analysis of B-NT system, which is essential compositional equipment of B-ISDN access network. A simulator enabling performance analysis according to the change of network configuration topology and the change of user traffic is developed in this study. The developed B-NT, system simulator consists of graphic user interface module, simulation program automatic generator module, and B-NT system model library module. As examples of the results of performance analysis using the simulator, end-to-end user cell transmission delay time, queueing delay time in each system, and cell loss rate in the head node switch are presented. The simulator developed in this paper can be utilized in determining the network topology of B-NT system.
This paper is concerned with a performance analysis using a wired/wireless gateway based on DeviceNet. For the performance analysis, the data transmission time between DeviceNet and the wireless devices is investigated and analyzed. The experimental results show the perfom1ance in terms of the polling/COS service time and end-to-end delay.

Mobile Ad Hoc Network(MANET) has highly dynamic topology, hence presents a great challenge on the network performance evaluation and network protocol design. We proposed total path break up time, $\sum_{i}T_i$, as a metric to measure the performance of the total system as well as an individual connection. In this paper, we evaluate and analyze the performance of three mobility models(Random Waypoint, Manhattan, Blocked Manhattan) by applying the total path break up metric, investigate why network parameters such as packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay, etc. vary by mobility models. We also present analysis result how much AODV Buffer improve packet delivery ratio and increase the end-to-end delay in spite of the path break up.
The measurement of RTT (Round Trip Time) can be used for the analysis of Internet congestion. However, simple measuring of RTT which measures only hun around time of a packet can not infer a packet forward/backward delay variation. In this thesis, we present a new algorithm which can be used for the estimation of forward/backward delay variation of packets. These delay variations are implication of network congestion state. In this algorithm, the reference forward/backward delay can be determined based on the minimum RTT value. The delay variation of each packet can be calculated by comparing reference delay with the packet delay. We verified our proposed algorithm by NS-2 simulation and delay measuring in a real network.

An Ethernet PON(Passive Optical Network) is an economical and efficient access network that has received significant research attention in recent years. A MAC(Media Access Control) protocol of PON , the next generation access network, is based on TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) basically and can classify this protocol into a fixed length slot assignment method suitable for leased line supporting QoS(Quality of Service) and a variable length slot assignment method suitable for LAN/MAN with the best effort. For analyzing the performance of these protocols, we design an Ethernet PON model using OPNET tool. To establish the maximum efficiency of a network, we verify a MAC protocol and determine the optimal number of ONUs(Optical Network Unit) that can be accepted by one OLT(Optical Line Terminal) and propose the suitable buffer size of ONU based on analyzing the end-to-end Ethernet delay, queuing delay, throughput, and utilization.
High performance net재rking is one of key factors to provide support for data intensive applications in the Internet. Extended frame size has a major impact on end to-end performance with increasing effective TCP throughput and decreasing system overhead. Most of the research about extended frames has focused on local area network performance and the impact that extended frame size has on the system elements including memory, network interface card and so forth. In the paper, we analyse the effects of the extended frames to the other traffic flows sharing Internet paths for the wide area performance of TCP by conducting various network simulations. Results show that securing available bandwidth in no loss and low delay networks is indispensable to exploit the efficiency of extended frames.

This paper derives two main end-to-end performance metrics, namely the spatial capacity density and the average end-to-end delay of the multi-hop wireless ad hoc networks with multi-antenna communications. Based on the closed-form expressions of these performance metrics, three hopping strategies, i.e., the closest neighbor, the furthest neighbor and the randomly selected neighbor hopping strategies have been investigated. This formulation provides insights into the relations among node density, diversity gains, number of hops and some other network design parameters which jointly determine network performances, and a method of choosing the best hopping strategy which can be formulated from a network design perspective.
