  • Confinement is major contribution to bond strength between reinforcement steel bars and concrete. Cover thickness, bar spacing and transverse reinforcement are the key confinement factors of current provisions for the development and splices of reinforcement. However, current provisions are still too complicated to determine the values of the confinement, which need to be well delineated in the process of design. In this study, an experimental work using beam-end and splice specimens was performed to examine the effect of concrete cover on bond strength. The results of this experiment and previously available data are analyzed to identify the effects of confinement on bond strength. From this reevaluation, new provisions for the development and splices of reinforcement are proposed. The provisions suggest some limitations in the confinement index. The new provisions will allow the engineers to use a simple and yet satisfactory and appropriate method or a precise approach for design to determine the values of confinement on the calculation of development and splice lengths.

  • Many multi-modulus blind equalization algorithms (MMA) have been presented in the past to overcome the undesirable high misadjustment exhibited by the well-known constant modulus algorithm. Some of these MMA schemes, specifically tailored for quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations, have also been proved to fix the phase offset error without needing any rotator at the end of the equalizer stage. In this paper, a new multi-modulus algorithm is presented for QAM signals. The contribution lies in the technique to incorporate the sliced symbols (outcomes of decision device) in the multi-modulus-based weight adaptation process. The convergence characteristics of the proposed sliced multi-modulus algorithm (S-MMA) is demonstrated by way of simulations, and it is shown that it gives better steady-state performance in terms of residual inter-symbol interference and symbol-error rate. It has also been shown that the proposed algorithm exhibits lesser steady-state misadjustment compared to the best reported MMA.

  • In this paper, we present an ontology mediation solution based on the methods frequently used in Formal Concept Analysis. Our approach of mediation is based on the existence of instances associated to two source ontologies, then we can generate concepts in a new ontology if and only if they share the same extent. Hence our approach creates a merged ontology which captures the knowledge of these two source ontologies. The main contributions of this work are (i) to enable the creation of concepts not originally in the source ontologies, (ii) to propose a solution to label these emerging concepts and finally (iii) to optimize the resulting ontology by eliminating redundant or non pertinent concepts. Another contribution of this work is to emphasize that several forms of mediated ontology can be defined based on the relaxation of certain criteria produced from our method. The solution that we propose for tackling these issues is an automatic solution, meaning that it does not require the intervention of the end-user, excepting for the definition of the common set of ontology instances.

  • This paper surveyed 30 system designers and developers who had been participating in a project for five months to examine the usefulness of design artifacts for object-oriented system development. A set of nine requirement and design documents was selected in consideration of the IEEE guidelines. Overall the respondents appeared to agree that the artifacts were useful for system development. On the other hand, the contribution of design artifacts to maintenance was rated lower due to the frequent changes over the iterative process. Of the artifacts, considered more useful were use case specifications, UI design and operation specifications. The respondents were the most reluctant to write test cases. Designers did not like to document more details in the design artifacts than did developers. A future study is required to determine the economics end change management of documentation.

  • In the crane control system, it is reguired that the travelling time of the crane must be reduced as much as possible and the swing must be stoped at the end point. In paper, we present a hybrid control method which include the optimal regulator and velocity pattern controller in order to make high performance of the anti-sway. To implement the control algorithm, the dynamic equation is linearlized at an equilibrium point, so that the liner time invariant state equation can be obtained. In order to experiment the crane control, we consider 1 over 10 of the gantry crane which is used in a port. As a result, the hybrid control method improve efficient anti-sway control more than conventional velocity pattern control. It is expected that the proposed system will make an important contribution to the industrial fields.

  • We report and discuss molecular and isotopic properties of hydrate-bound gases from 55 samples and void gases from 494 samples collected during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 204 at Hydrate Ridge offshore Oregon. Gas hydrates appear to crystallize in sediments from two end-member gas sources (deep allochthonous and in situ) as mixtures of different proportions. In an area of high gas flux at the Southern Summit of the ridge (Sites 1248-1250), shallow (0-40 meters below the seafloor (mbsf)) gas hydrates are composed of mainly allochthonous mixed microbial and thermogenic methane and a small portion of thermogenic C2+ gases, which migrated vertically and laterally from as deep as 2-2.5 km depths. In contrast, deep (50-105 mbsf) gas hydrates at the Southern Summit (Sites 1248 and 1250) and on the flanks of the ridge (Sites 1244-1247) crystallize mainly from microbial methane and ethane generated dominantly in situ. A small contribution of allochthonous gas may also be present at sites where geologic and tectonic settings favor vertical gas migration from greater depth (e.g., Site 1244).

  • An approach to Just-In-Time for small job-shop-type manufacturers is presented. This is aimed at those who understand the pull production system, however, cannot afford either swift changeover in workcenters or frequent delivery to customers. First, as a production planning technique, a lot-sizing model entitled Multilevel Least Total Cost Model(MLTCM) is developed; The production order quantities of each components be those requiremensts of the end item production lot. The contribution of MLTCM is shown via simulation. Then, a framework of the Kanban operations is designed; A Production Control Kanban is introduced as a communication tool with Production Kanban in a job-shop.

  • In the control of crane system, the traversing time of the trolley must be reduced as much as possible and the swing must be stopped at the end point. To design the minimum time control system, Pontryagim maximum principle is applied. In order to implement the control algorithm, the dynamic equation is linearlized at an equilibrium point, so that the linear time invariant state equation can be obtained. The overall performance of the closed loop system is evaluated by means of computer simulations and practical experiments in a broad range of working conditions. The effectiveness is proved through the experimental results for the anti-sway control of the load and the position control of trolly. It is expected that the proposed system will make an important contribution to the industrial fields.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the effective width of wide beam. Three specimens were designed to have different depths of wide beam and to simulate exterior beam-column joint including spandrel beam. Load reversals were applied to the end of wide beam to model behaviors under seismic situation. From the test, it was shown that the strength and effective width of specimens were improved when the depth of specimens increased. The effective width of wide beam depended on the depth of it. Formulas in ACI 318-02 underestimated the effective width of wide beam even though these reflected the contribution of the depth of beam.

  • A new method to get reliable viewing angle measurements on LCD reflective display is presented. This method is based on the use of commercial Fourier optics viewing angle instruments already proposed by ELDIM for more than 15 years. This apparatus is capable to measure simultaneously quasi all the incidence and azimuth angles and to control very precisely the illumination of the sample. We show that, in contrast to other instruments, a clever illumination procedure with two different conditions allows separation of the intrinsic reflective contribution of the display and of the parasitic front end reflection. In this way, intrinsic performances of the display can be obtained at any incidence and azimuth angles and realistic observer conditions can be simulated.
