Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate and compare the radiopacity of dentin, enamel, and 8 restorative composites on conventional radiograph and digital images with different resolutions. Materials and Methods: Specimens were fabricated from 8 materials and human molars were longitudinally sectioned 1.0 mm thick to include both enamel and dentin. The specimens and tooth sections were imaged by conventional radiograph using #4 sized intraoral film and digital images were taken in high speed and high resolution modes using a phosphor storage plate. Densitometric evaluation of the enamel, dentin, restorative materials, a lead sheet, and an aluminum step wedge was performed on the radiographic images. For the evaluation, the Al equivalent (mm) for each material was calculated. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p<0.05), considering the material factor and then the radiographic method factor, individually. Results: The high speed mode allowed the highest radiopacity, while the high resolution mode generated the lowest values. Furthermore, the high resolution mode was the most efficient method for radiographic differentiation between restorative composites and dentin. The conventional radiograph was the most effective in enabling differentiation between enamel and composites. The high speed mode was the least effective in enabling radiographic differentiation between the dental tissues and restorative composites. Conclusion: The high speed mode of digital imaging was not effective for differentiation between enamel and composites. This made it less effective than the high resolution mode and conventional radiographs. All of the composites evaluated showed radiopacity values that fit the ISO 4049 recommendations.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the relative radiopacities of cavity lining materials (Resin-modified Glass Ionomer cement, Compomer and Plowable resin) for posterior composite resin restoration. Material & Methods: Resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji II LC, Vitrebond/sup TM/), Compomers (Dyract /sup (R)/ Compoglass, F2,000, Dyract/sup (R)/ flow Compoglass Flow) and Flowable resins (Tetric/sup (R)/ flow, Aeliteflo/sup TM/ Revolution/sup TM/) were used. Five specimens of 5 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick were fabricated with each material. Human molars were horizontally sectioned 2 mm thick to include both enamel and dentin. The radiopacities of enamel, dentin, cavity lining materials, aluminum step wedge were obtainded from conventional radiograph and NIH image program. Results: All the tested lining materials showed levels of radiopacity the same as or greater than that of dentin. All compomer tested (Dyract, Compoglass, F2,000, Dyract flow, Compoglass Flow) and Vitrebond/sup TM/, Tetric/sup (R)/ flow were more radiopaque than enamel. The radiopacities of Fuji II LC and Revolution/sup TM/ were between enamel and dentin and resin-modified glass ionomer cement, Compomer and Tetric/sup (R)/ flow were greater than those of Revolution/sup TM/, Aeliteflo/sup TM/ or dentin. The level of radiopacity of the tested materials was variable; those with low radiopacity should be avoided in class II restorations, where a clear determination of recurrent caries by the examining clinician could be compromised. Conclusion: Clinician should be able to distinguish these cavity lining materials radiographically from recurrent decay, voids, gaps, or other defects that lead to clinical failure. Utilization of materials ranked more radiopaque than enamel would enable clinicians to distinguish the lining material from tooth structure.

The intention of this study was to investigate the preventive effect of chlorhexidine varnish on enamel demineralization. The sample consisted of 57 first premolars scheduled to be extracted for orthodontic purposes. The control group (N=10) was left untreated and the experimental groups were worn with specially designed stainless steel orthodontic bands on premolar for plaque accumulation. The group 1 (N=9) was worn band only, the group 2 (N=19) was applied with chlorhexidine varnish for one time, and the group 3 (N=19) was applied with chlorhexidine varnish for 3 times once a week. After 4 weeks of experimental periods, every specimen were examined by SEM and Vickers hardness test to evaluate and compare the degree of enamel decalcification. The results were as follows: 1. Although SEM revealed various degree of enamel demineralization in every experimental groups, the group 1 showed more severe demineralizations than the group 2 and 3. 2. The mean Vickers Hardness Numbers measured in this study seemed to reveal that there was a statistically significant difference between the control goup and the group 1 (P<0.05), and also a significant difference between the group 1 and the group 2, 3 (P<0.05). And there was no significant difference between the group 2 and the group 3 (p>0.05). 3. The results of VHN did not deemed to show a statistically significant difference between maxillary premolar and mandibular premolar in both group 2 and group 3 (P>0.05).
The prognosis of transplanted teeth is strongly related with periodontal healing. Several experimental studies showed that the application of enamel matrix derivatives on periodontitis-affected root surfaces resulted in periodontal regeneration. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of enamel matrix derivatives on periodontitis-affected root surfaces prior to transplantation in dogs. Class III Furcation defects were surgically created on the left second, the third and the fourth premolar in the mandibles of nine mongrel dogs and experimental periodontitis was induced by placing small cotton pellets into defects for 3 weeks. Periodontitis-affected roots were treated by scaling and planing and the coronal portions were removed. Each root was extracted and implanted into recipient bed prepared in the contralateral premolar area. The transplanted roots were grouped according to the treatment modalities; Group I- roots treated with saline only, Group II- roots conditioned by neutral EDTA, and Group III- roots conditioned by neutral EDTA and enamel matrix derivatives ($EMDOGAIN^{(R)}$, BIORA Co., Sweden). The animals were sacrificed at 1 week, 3 weeks, and 10 weeks after transplantation and decalcified specimens were prepared for histologic examination. In Group I, healing was most frequently characterized by root resorption and ankylosis. In Group II, with root resorption and ankylosis in a few specimens, connective tissue attachment was partly seen on denuded root surface, but no cementum formation was seen. In Group III, there was regeneration by new cementum and periodontal ligament on denuded root surface, although slight root resorption and ankylosis were found in a few specimens. This result suggests that enamel matrix derivatives treatment on periodontitis-aggected root surface could reduce the frequency of root resorption and ankylosis and contribute to periodontal regeneration, and might be useful for autologous transplantation.
The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of enamel matrix derivative on guided bone regeneration with intramarrow penetration in rabbits. Eight adult male rabbits (mean BW 2Kg) were used in this study. Intramarrow penetration defects were surgically created with round carbide bur(HP long #6) on calvaria of rabbits. Defects were assigned to the control group grafted with mixture of the same quantity of demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft and deproteinized bovine bone mineral. Then, guided bone regeneration was carried out using resorbable membrane and suture. Enamel matrix derivative applied to defects was assigned to the test group. And treated as same manners as the control group. At 1, 2, 3 and 8 weeks after the surgery, animals were sacrificed, specimens were obtained and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin for light microscopic evaluation. The results of this study were as follows : 1. At 1, 2 and 3 weeks, no differences were observed between the control group and the test group in the aspect of bone formation around bone graft. 2. Proliferation of blood capillary was faster in the test group than in the control group. 3. Bone regeneration in intramarrow penetration was faster in the test group than in the control group. 4. At 8 weeks, new osteoid tissue formation around bone graft was more prominent in the test group than in the control group. From the above results, enamel matrix derivative might be considered as the osteopromotion material and effective in the guided bone regeneration with intramarrow penetration.
This study was undertaken to evaluate the degree of the marginal leakage of composite restoration with 3 brands of dental adhesives by means of the dye penetration at the enamel and dentinal margins. 150 cavities of class V were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of 75 extracted anterior and premolar teeth, which were devided into 3 groups. The cavities were filled with composite resin, Silar$^{(R)}$ (3M) and Heliosit$^{(R)}$ (Vivadent) after application of the dental adhesives, specifically Scotchbond$^{(R)}$ (3M) which is essentially composed with halophosphorus ester of Bis-GMA, Dentin Adhesit$^{(R)}$ (Vivadent) which is polyurethane resin, and Enamel Bond$^{(R)}$ (3M) which is a product of Bis-GMA with low viscosity at internal surfaces and margins of the cavities. All specimens were immersed in $37^{\circ}C$, 0.5% methylene blue solution for 24 hours after thermocycling at $4^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$, embedded in acrylic resin, and sectioned with diamond disk into two parts. The sectioned specimens observed with the light microscope. The following results were obtained: 1. The group filled with Scotchbond$^{(R)}$-Silar$^{(R)}$ the other two groups at the enamel margins. 2. No significant difference in the degree of the marginal leakage had appeared between Dentin Adhesit$^{(R)}$-Heliosit$^{(R)}$ group an d Enamel Bond$^{(R)}$-Silar$^{(R)}$ group at the enamel margins. 3. Severe marginal leakage with penetration of dye to the floor of cavity had appeared from the all three groups and no significant difference in the degree of marginal leakage existed between the three groups at the dentinal margins.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on the shear bond strength of composite resin to bleached enamel. Materials and Methods: Ninety enamel surfaces of maxillary incisors were randomly divided into 9 groups as follows: G1: control (no bleaching); G2: bleaching; G3: bleaching and storage for seven days; G4 - 6: bleaching and application of 600, 800 and 1,000 ${\mu}mol$ of EGCG-containing solution for 10 minutes, respectively; G7 - 9: bleaching and application of 600, 800 and 1,000 ${\mu}mol$ of EGCG-containing solution for 20 minutes, respectively. The specimens were bleached with 30% hydrogen peroxide gel and a composite resin cylinder was bonded on each specimen using a bonding agent. Shear bond strength of the samples were measured in MPa. Data was analyzed using the two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (${\alpha}$ = 0.05). Results: The maximum and minimum mean shear bond strength values were observed in G1 and G2, respectively. Time and concentration of EGCG showed no significant effects on bond strength of the groups (p > 0.05). Multiple comparison of groups did not reveal any significant differences between the groups except for G2 and all the other groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: There is a significant decrease in bond strength of composite resin to enamel immediately after bleaching. A delay of one week before bonding and the use of EGCG increased bond strength of composite resin to bleached enamel.

A recent laboratory study has demonstrated improved caries lesion resistance with enamel that was exposed to $CO_2$ laser irradiation for very short time period. When topical fluoride treatment was performed before or after laser irradiation, reductions in dental caries. The purpose of this scanning electron microscopic(SEM) study and atomic force microscope study was to characterize surface alterations in tooth enamel after in vitro laser irradiation alone and combined topical fluoride treatment either before or after laser irradiation. The treatment effects of laser irradiation led to the formation of an irregular, mild porosities and fine fissures, also created granular materials. But when laser irradiation was followed by APF, the enamel surface had homogenous architecture. The result led to the caries resistance effects by these granular structures have been considered to represent redeposited mineral phases due to the mobilization of calcium, phosphate, and fluoride from lased enamel.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of additional enamel etching with phosphoric acid on the microleakage of the adhesion of self-etching primer system. Class V cavity($4mm{\times}3mm{\times}1.5mm$) preparations with all margins in enamel were prepared on buccal surface of 42 extracted human upper central incisor teeth. Prepared teeth were randomly divided into 3 groups. Group 1:no additional pretreatment with 37% phosphoric acid (NE). Group 2:additional pretreatment with 37% phosphoric acid for 10 seconds (E10s). Group 3:additional pretreatment with 37% phosphoric acid for 20 seconds (E20s). The adhesives(Clearfil SE $Bond^{\circledR}$, Kuraray, Osaka, Japan) and composite resins(Clearfil $AP-X^{\circledR}$, Osaka, Kuraray, Japan) were applied following the manufacturer's instructions. All the specimens were finished with the polishing disc(3M dental product, St Paul, MN, USA), thermocycled for 500 cycles between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ and resected apical 3-mm root. 0.028 stainless steel wire was inserted apically into the pulp chamber of each tooth and sealed into position with sticky wax. Surrounding tooth surface was covered with a nail varnish 2 times except areas 1mm far from all the margins. After drying for one day, soaked the samples in the distilled water. Microleakage was assessed by electrochemical method(System 6514, $Electrometer^{\circledR}$), Keithley, USA) in the distilled water. In this study, the microleakage was the lowest in group 1 (NE) and the highest in group 3(E20s)(NE
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the etching effects and bond strength of total etching and self-etching adhesive system on unground enamel using scanning electron microscopy and microtensile bond strength test. The buccal coronal unground enamel from human extracted molars were prepared using low-speed diamond saw. Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (group SM). Clearfil SE Bond (group SE), or Adper Prompt L-Pop (group LP) were applied to the prepared teeth. and the blocks of resin composite (Filtek Z250) were built up incrementally. Resin tag formation was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. after removal of enamel surface by acid dissolution and dehydration. For microtensile bond strength test. resin-bonded teeth were sectioned to give a bonded surface area of $1\textrm{mm}^2$. Microtensile bond strength test was perfomed. The results of this study were as follows. 1. A definite etching pattern was observed in Scotchbond Multi-Purpose group. 2. Self-etching groups were characterized as shallow and irregular etching patterns. 3. The results (mean) of microtensile bond strength were SM: 26.55 MPa, SE: 18.15 MPa, LP: 15.57 MPa. SM had significantly higher microtensile bond strength than 8E and PL (p < 0.05). but there was no significant differance between SE and PL.
