Identifying Urban Spatial Structure through GIS and Remote Sensing Data -The Case of Daegu Metropolitan Area- (지리정보시스템과 원격탐사자료를 이용한 도시공간구조의 파악 -대구광역권 사례연구-)

  • The main purpose of this study is to identify urban spatial structure by applying geographic information system and remote sensing data. This study identifies the urban spatial structure of non-megalopolis by analyzing the spatial distribution of population and employment in the case of Daegu metropolitan area. For this purpose, multi-temporal satellite image data (Landsat TM; 1995, 2000 and 2005) were utilized through the geographic information system. The distance-decay estimations in terms of population and employment density show that Daegu region as a whole shows monocentric urban characteristics. However, some evidences of polycentricism such as low explanation power of monocentric urban model, rises in multiple employment centers, decentralization of employment are emerging.

Industry of Employment and Spontaneous Abortion of Female Workers (여성의 종사산업과 자연유산)

  • In Korea, female workforce has reached more than 40% of total working population, but the effects of work on spontaneous abortion are yet to be examined. This study as conducted to investigate the occupational effects on spontaneous abortion. Medical insurance claim data were used to examine the effects of the employment status and industry of employment on spontaneous abortion. The study population was composed of females, aged $15{\sim}44$, who were the beneficiary of medical insurance in the month of June, 1993. The working females covered by medical insurance for industrial workers, had the highest age-adjusted Spontaneous Abortion rate (SAB rate=claim frequency of spontaneous abortion/claim frequency of complication of pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium), 6.65% whereas female dependants of medical insurance for industrial workers had the lowest age-adjusted SAB rate, 4.54%. Among industrial workers, the workers in manufacturing industry had the highest age-adjusted Spontaneous Abortion ratio(SAB ratio=claim frequency of spontaneous abortion/claim frequency of completly normal delivery), 43.2/100 whereas those in financing and service industry had age-adjusted SAB ratio, 16.2/100 and 20.5/100, respectively. The results of the study suggest the adverse effect of manufacturing Industry on reproduction. Work environments such as chemical exposures, overwork, awkard posture, and job stress should be further studied for their effects on reproductive functions of female.

The Unequal Burden of Self-Reported Musculoskeletal Pains Among South Korean and European Employees Based on Age, Gender, and Employment Status

  • Background: The objective of this study was to elucidate the relationships musculoskeletal pains with combined vulnerability in terms of age, gender, and employment status Methods: The fifth European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) in 2010 (43,816 participants aged 15 years and over) analyzed for European employees and the third Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS) in 2011 (50,032 participants aged 15 years and older) analyzed for Korean employees. In this study, three well known vulnerable factors to musculoskeletal pains (older age, female gender, and precarious employment status) were combined and defined as combined vulnerability. Associations of musculoskeletal pains with combined vulnerability were assessed with prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) estimated by Poisson regression models with robust estimates of variance. Results: The prevalences of musculoskeletal pains were lower but the absolute and relative differences between combined vulnerabilities were higher among Korean employees compared with the European employees. Furthermore, the increased risk of having musculoskeletal pains according to combined vulnerability was modestly explained by socioeconomic factors and exposure to ergonomic risk factors, especially in Republic of Korea. Conclusions: The results of this study showed that the labor market may be more unfavorable for female and elderly workers in Republic of Korea. Any prevention strategies to ward off musculoskeletal pains, therefore, should be found and implemented to mitigate or buffer against the most vulnerable work population, older, female, and precarious employment status, in Republic of Korea.

Effects of Minimum Wage Increases on the Volume of Waged Employment: Evidence from the Economically Active Population Survey (최저임금 인상이 근로자 고용규모에 미치는 영향: "경제활동인구조사" 자료를 이용한 분석)

  • Employing bunching estimators of Cengiz et al. (2019) for data from the "Economically Active Population Survey," this paper estimates the effect of minimum wage increases on the volume of waged employment for the period 2009-2019. A bunching estimator, which exploits yearly changes in the hourly wage distribution due to the minimum wage hike, can be easily applied to the Korean labor market, which adopts the yearly single national minimum wage. The estimation results suggest that an increase in the annual minimum wage during the period from 2009 to 2019 had a negative effect on the volume of waged employment. A 10% increase in the (real) minimum wage leads to a 1.42~1.74% decrease in the volume of waged employment. Disemployment effects of minimum wage hikes are greater in the sector with a higher proportion of minimum wage workers. It is necessary to carefully consider disemployment effects in determining the level of the minimum wage.

  • Nowadays Korea, where the elderly comprise 11.7 percent of the population had approached to an aging society. In these situations, the purpose of this study is to investigate a employment policy directives of a senior for the employment activation. For this study. we divided the employment policy with a law aspect, a programmatic aspect and a social aspect. And researched about the employment policy case of advanced countries. In the law aspect, this study suggested that they should extend age-limited, strengthen the law and unify the policy actors. In the programmatic aspect, this study suggested that they should change the program goal, make diversification of programs and expand the education students. In the social aspect, this study suggested that they should promote the cognizance change and private participation about senior policy. This study was conducted for the employment activation of a senior.

A Analytical Study on the Change of Regional Employment Rate in the Service Industry (서비스산업에서의 지역별 고용률의 변화에 대한 분석 연구)

  • For recent years, there have been considerable changes in the employment rate of the service industry and its relative ratio. These changes vary depending on the region whether it is Seoul metropolitan region or not. According to main results of this article, the average of employment rate in the service industry has been highest in the Seoul metropolitan region. And the changes by period of the employment-rate in the service industry have increased continuously for all the time in the Seoul metropolitan region whereas they have varied in other regions. Also the relative ratio of employment rate in the service industry to total employment rate has been more higher in Seoul metropolitan region and Gangwon region than other regions, and also the changes by period of the relative ratio have more increased in these two regions than other regions. Finally, comparing metropolitan city regions with do regions for the average of employment rate in the service industry or the relative ratio of it, they have more higher in metropolitan city regions than do regions, whereas the changes by period of them have varied with each other regions.

The Disparities in Subjective Health by Employment Form and Gender: Focusing on the Interaction Effects with Health Resources (고용형태와 성별에 따른 주관적 건강에서의 격차: 건강자원과의 상호작용 효과를 중심으로)

  • Employment form and gender as stratification factors may generate health disparities in Korea. Previous studies have examined the existence of health disparities by employment form and gender. However, few studies examined how the health disparities can be reduced effectively. This study intends to confirm the existence of health disparities between employment-gender groups and explore the effective health resources which can reduce the possible disparities. Using a national probability sample of Korean adults collected in 2011, we attempts to test the interaction effects between employment-gender groups and health resources on self-rated health. For health resources, 24 variables of five dimensions(social relationship, psychological resource, activity factor, health behavior, and usage of medical service) are taken into account. In results, first, the health levels of the other three employment-gender groups are worse than that of male-regular workers. Second, the effective health resources which can reduce the health disparities are different across the employment-gender groups. An effective health resource for female-nonregular workers is a peaceful relationship with her children. Effective health resources for male-nonregular workers are peaceful relationships with his parents and siblings, low stress, religious activity, and exercise. An effective health resource for female-regular workers is interpersonal trust. These results imply that personal or social interventions for health of specific disadvantaged groups need to focus on specific resources which are more effective for the groups.

  • This paper intends to provide information about whichgroups should receive particular attention from policies aimed at raising participation and employment. A detailed portrait of the diversity of non-employment is presented with description of the extent the under-represented groups stayed in situations of labor inactivity. Also, once in employment, how these groups move from one sector to another is a main interest in the analysis. Using longitudinal data (1998-2002) constructed from 'the economically active population survey', I followed individuals over a five-year period and analyzed how frequently inactive persons enter the labor market and how they change industries and statuses.

The impact of cement industry on regional change (시멘트공업이 지역에 미친 영향)

  • This study aims to analyze the impact of cement industry on region change. For this study Maepo-Eub was selected as study area, where three cement factories are located. The data for analysis were obtained from interviews, questionaire surveys and the employee list of each cement factory. The analytic procedures for this study are as follows: 1) The change of regional employment was analyzed by development was industry in terms of the permanent address, education level, occupational status of the employee. 2) The degree of population growth are analyzed by developmental staae of the industry. Some conclusions from this study follows: 1) As these cement factories were built at Maepo in the 1960's, there were plenty of employment opportunities. Thus many technicians and workers flooded in Maepo-Eub. in the 1970's with the expansion of production facilities therewere much more immigrants to the industrial region, while there were outflow in the neighboring rural areas. In the 1980's the opportunity for the employment of cement factories have been decreased due to the introduction of the automation processes and larger, sized machines. Among the employee of three cement factories the native of Chungcheongbukdo (65%; in them Danyang 52%, Jecheon 32%) is dominant, the second is from Kangwon-do (13%), and the third is from Kyungsangbuk-do (11%) adjacent to Chungcheongbuk-do. It means that there are more employment opportunity in the near places of cement factories. 2) In the period of 1960's study area had experineed rapid social increase in population by the development of cement industry. That is, cement industries created new job opportunities and attracted large population concentration into this area. In the period of 1970's the population of the industrial region have increased continuously, while the population of neighboring rural areas have decreased. In the period of 1980's the population of Maepo decreased steadily because of decrease of labour forces through automation and commuting. Thus in the early stage of idustrial development large population concentrated in the neighboring villages of cement factories, and formed residential areas, commercial areas and service areas. As agricultural and was encroached, rural people left their regions to live in the more convenient suburbs. 3) People engaged in cement industry think that cement industry has a favorable influence on regional development, such as creating job opportunity, raising income level, developing business and service sector, and leading high economic growth. While farmers and some people think that cement industries as a pollution causing factories have a harmful influence on regional development, sucha as injuring the crops, causing environmental pollution, and being harmful to health. If pollution problems are solved, I think Maepo will play an important role as a regional center which can offer employment opportunity, business and service function to pheripheral rural areas, and raise a income level.

  • This study takes of youth panel data(2002-2003), there is the purpose to know to youth employed's labor mobility conditions of employment status conversion and examine on factors affecting conversion of employment status. Main analysis result and policy imply, is as following. First, although youth employed's non-standard employment shows some decrease, employment youth hierarchy was construed that youth of our country is consisting very changefully because appear great turnover that is converted by unemployment or Not economically activity population same period. Specially, non-standard employment phenomenon of woman or low in scholarship person appeared notedly, and because phenomenon that is converted by unemployment or Not economically activity population is expose that is deepened, discriminating policy of government dimension is required for employment stabilization of these class. Second, show result that danger to escape to non-standard job risk trap which seeking employment activity of youth class is arranged case or company which is formed by official path is suitable becomes low, must formulate path of employment about youth class and improve qualitative level of employment through suitable job placement education of youth class or function (technology) level. Third, when was construed, but take into account that the although large enterprise have low risk in non-standard job, recently employment of youth class consists very limited, rather small scale business or smaller enterprise's competitive power preferably need to be plan. Finally, danger to non-standard job youth employed's company form is government connection wonder was expose that high, Such result can do that it is difficult by limited research period, but reflect actuality that youth unemployment policy of our country is enforced laying stress on public labor or unregular job employment such as internship system. Therefore, current youth unemployment policy may have to change by employment policy that can secure stable work record by youth class or act as bridge-building that promote conversion by full-time job.
