Purpose - Service employees who work at airline check-in counters in airport are typically employed to undergo emotional labor. Emotional labor of airport service employees is an important managerial issue that must be solved. This study attempts to examine the underlying mechanism of emotional labor on turnover intention. It focuses on the consequences of emotional labor of service employees. The purpose of this study is to examine and empirically test how the two-types of emotional labor(deep-acting & surface-acting) of service employees differently affect the level of their job satisfaction and job stress. It also investigates the relationship between job satisfaction, job stress, and turnover intention. For this purpose, first, this study identified the structural relationship between emotional labor, job satisfaction, job stress, and turnover intention. Second, it investigated the mediating effects of job satisfaction between deep-acting and turnover intention. Research design, data, and methodology - To empirically test these structural relationships among research variables, data were collected by a interview from service manager of domestic airline companies and survey from 179 service employees who are working at single domestic airline check-in counters in airports in Korea using a self-rating questionnaire with total 19 items dealing with emotional labor, job satisfaction, job stress, and turnover intention. To test the research hypotheses, collected data were analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structure equation model (SEM). Results - This study obtains meaningful research results. The results from this study are as follows. First, deep-acting has a positive effect on job satisfaction, whereas, deep-acting has a negative effect on job satisfaction. Second, surface-acting has a positive effect on job stress, whereas, the effects of surface-acting on job satisfaction did not show statistically significant result. Also, job satisfaction has partial mediating roles to the relationship between deep-acting and turnover intention. Conclusions - Based on the results of this empirical study, emotional labor of service employees is one of the key factors influencing their job satisfaction and job stress. In particular, deep-acting is the important factor in emotional labor to increase job satisfaction and reduce job stress. Finally, theoretical, managerial implications, and research limitations are mentioned in discussion parts.
This is an empirical study on Korean traditional restaurant service providers and customers who get direct service from them. This study focuses on the service performance determiners; customer satisfaction, service quality, service providers' satisfaction and loyalty. In order to meet its purpose, we survey 1,000 customers who have visited Korean traditional restaurants. This survey uses the SERVPERF service quality measuring theory. The results are as follows: First, the service providers' satisfaction have an effect on service quality, so the supervisor of a Korean traditional restaurant should construct a HRM (Human Resources Management) system for increasing employees' satisfaction. Second, employees' loyalty is significant, but its effect is lower than their satisfaction. Third, service quality affects customers' satisfaction and loyalty significantly. Fourth, employees' satisfaction and loyalty considerably influences customers' satisfaction and loyalty. Consequently, restaurant managers put their effort into increasing employees' satisfaction, loyalty, and service quality.
The purpose of this study is to find determinants for service mind and skills of hospital employees to seek ways to improve the service level of hospitals. The past studies focused on the perspectives of customers in finding the solutions for service improvement. However, the existing approach failed in delving into the whole picture of service system. The behind operation of service system(e.g., selection and training of employees, support system) needs to be examined to have a balanced solution of service improvement. The personal characteristics, organizational characteristics, and customer experience were considered as the independent variables in predicting service mind and skills. The data collected in this study was gathered through questionnaire survey with 291 employees in five hospitals - from Sept. 10 to Oct. 16 in 2004. The results are as follows. 1. The regression analysis showed that job satisfaction and service commitment of organization were statistically significant in predicting service mind and skills. 2. The hierarchical regression analysis showed that the effect of hospital type on service mind was explained by service commitment of organization.
The purpose of this research is to study empirically the relationship between servant leadership and organizational effectiveness and more importantly the moderating effect of Hospital employees' belief in public service on such relationship. The result showed that servant leadership positively affects three organizational effectiveness including job satisfaction, organizational commitment and OCB(organizational citizenship behavior). It was also found that Veterans Hospital employees' belief in public service moderated the relationship between servant leadership and those three organizational effectiveness variables. In other words, those who have strong belief in public service showed higher job satisfaction, organizational commitment and OCB as well as higher service and responsibility mind. Finally, limitations of the study and suggestions for future studies are presented in the conclusion.
Purpose - Leadership style is an important factor in determining the attitude and behavior of employees and their satisfaction with an organization. Contributing the efficiency of an organization, Especially, servant leadership focusing on meeting employees' hopes and desires positively affect success of the organization and performance of employees. In the airline service industry it is necessary to conduct studies for an internal marketing on servant leadership that emphasizes the trust in the dignity of humans and spirit of service to subordinates as a factor affecting the job satisfaction. Research design, data, and methodology -Therefore, in this research, it is empirically analyzed that employees' perception of a supervisor's support plays mediating role in the relationship between employees' perception of servant leadership and perception of an organization's support using multiple and hierarchal regression analysis targeting 243 employees working in D Airline. Result - As a result, Employees' employees' perceived supervisor's support mediates the relationship between employees' perceived servant leadership of a supervisor and employees' perceived organizational support. Conclusions - This study suggests that the servant leadership of a supervisor perceived by employees constitutes an important preceding variable in enhancing the employees' perception on organizational support.

The purpose of this study was to explore employees' experiences of integrated services in Healthy Family and Multicultural Family Support Centers in Seoul. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven employees, including managers and heads of Healthy Family and Multicultural Family Support Centers. The interviews identified three themes: the direction of integrated service, the characteristics of the integration process, and the challenges of integrated service. For the direction of integrated service, the participants identified the integration center as a professional family services organization that provided customized services for different types of families. During the integration process, employees found it difficult to provide integrated services because few guidelines existed on operating an integration center that provided services to families with different characteristics and needs. However, they also explained positive aspects of integration, such as strengthening the business's capacity by expanding the organization. To improve integrated service, employees emphasized the expertise and appropriateness of the family services over the efficiency of the integration centers. They also stressed expansion as a role of a professional family services organization. These findings suggested that establishing a clear direction for integrated service as well as the roles of administrative support agencies is important for activating integrated services.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of service guarantees of tourist hotels on employees' perception of role clarity and customer orientation. Specifically, this study analyzed how the employees' perception of role clarity as a parameter, with the employees' reliability, guarantee-related communication, guarantee limitation, and organizational support as independent variables, affected the dependent variable, customer orientation. As a result of empirical analysis of employees in the first grade hotel in Seoul, it was analyzed that the higher the reliability of employees in service guarantee, the higher the communication and organizational support in the organization related to guarantee work, the higher the role clarity and perception level of employees. The higher the reliability, guarantee limitation and organizational support level of guarantee, the higher the customer orientation, but the guarantee-related communication did not show significant influence. The perception degree of role clarity of employees has a significant effect on customer orientation. According to those results of this analysis, this study examined the influence of each configuration of service guarantee of tourist hotel employees on customer orientation, and presented various academic and practical implications.
Only service organizations providing service quality above customers' anticipations have survived and developed in hyper competitive environment. These organizations are more dependent on their customer-contact service employees than those providing tangible products, because of the characteristics of service, intangibility, inseparability, heterogeneity, and perishability. But few researches focused on the efficient managements or controls of service organizations in this context. Therefore, author aimed at understanding of the determinants of service organizations' control system(i.e., characteristics of service), service employees' reaction on control types(i.e., service employees' role stress), and their performance(perceived service quality by customers). First the concepts of service quality and control systems are described. Specially, author explained the differences between service quality and service satisfaction or service attitude, and the control system types and their fundamental ideologies. Second, some propositions are provided according to integrated framework developed in this paper: (1)control types according to the characteristics of service, (2)influences of control systems on employees' reactions and (3)perceives service quality by the customers, and (4)relationships between the reactions and the service quality. This paper concludes with a summary, a discussion of theoretical and managerial implications, and several suggestions for future directions.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the LOHAS index value of school food service employees on the purchase of food materials and foodservice quality. The subjects consisted of 566 foodservice employees. The findings were as follows. (1) The foodservice employee's LOHAS index fell within that of a NOMADICS group with an average of 72.18 points out of 100 points. (2) When the age, working experience and LOHAS index of the foodservice employees was high, the necessity, view, interest and recognition of LOHAS introduction for the improvement of the foodservice environment was high. (3) The amount of environmentally-friendly food materials purchased by foodservice employees was high, when they had a high LOHAS index. (4) High foodservice quality management items of foodservice employees were 'sanitation management' (3.87 points) and 'human resource management' (3.84 points), whereas 'menu management' (3.57 points) and 'food material and inspection management' (3.61 points) scored low. (5) The LOHAS index of foodservice employees has a significant impact on the purchase intention of environmentally-friendly food materials in LOHAS and NOMADICS groups. (6) This study confirmed that a higher LOHAS index of foodservice employees was associated with higher foodservice quality management behavior, which leads to an improved quality of foodservice.
The purpose of the present study was to assess food hygiene and safety knowledge, attitudes, and practices of food-service personnel in school food-service programs and to find factors affecting their knowledge, attitudes, and practices. A self-administered questionnaire was offered to a random sample of 40 kitchen employees in elementary schools in one region of Korea, with 37 completing the survey, a response rate of 92.5%. The survey was carried out over a two-month period (April-May, 2001). Knowledge score of the employees was high with a mean/standard deviation of 4.75/0.32 on a 5.0-point scale. They had significantly lower attitude score (4.55$\pm$0.33) and practice score (4.55$\pm$0.45) compared to the score of knowledge (p<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that (1) the employees' education level and work experience in school food-service programs affected their knowledge, (2) age, level of living, monthly income, and housing type affected their attitudes, and (3) monthly income, level of living, housing type, and work experience in school food-service programs affected their practices. Pearson's correlation analysis confirmed that the knowledge and attitude scores were significantly correlated (r=0.598, p<0.001). The results indicate that the knowledge, attitude, and practice levels of the employees regarding the food hygiene and safety were better than expected, however, the results suggest a need for the adoption of approaches which take account of socio-economic and environmental influences on behavior to improve and maintain their practice level. The food-handling practices of school food-service employees need to be monitored routinely in order to ensure that safe food is served to our school children.
