  • Job shop scheduling with m different machines and n different jobs is a NP-hard problem of combinatorial optimization. The purpose of the paper is to develop the heuristic method using tabu search for job shop scheduling to minimize makespan or mean flowtime. To apply tabu search to job shop scheduling problem, in this paper we propose the several move methods that employ insert moves in order to generate the neighbor solutions, and present the efficient rescheduling procedure that yields active schedule for a changed operation sequence by a move of operations. We also discuss the tabu search techniques of diversifying the search of solution space as well as the simple tabu search. By experiments, we find the appropriate tabu list size and tabu attributes, and analyze the proposed tabu search techniques with respect to the quality of solutions and the efforts of computation. The experimental results show that the proposed tabu search techniques using long-term memory function have the ability to search a good solution, and are more efficient in the mean flowtime minimization problem than in the makespan minimization.

  • The goal of this research is the real-time implementation of an AEC (Acoustic Echo Canceller) using the floating-point digital signal processor of TMS320C31. We employ an FIR-type adaptive filter with the conventional NLMS (Normalized Least Mean Square) algorithm for the adaptation of filter coefficients. We program and optimize the system in the assembler level to make it run in real-time. With 8 kHz sampling rate, the implemented AEC requires $46\;\mu$sec and $77\;\mu$sec computational time per sample for 128-and 256-tap filter, respectively. It corresponds to 37% and 62% of maximum computational ability of TMS320C31 DSP.

  • Use of high yield pulp and recycled fiber as raw materials and water system closure result in higher fines content and buildup of organic and inorganic contaminants in white water. These are detrimental for the effectiveness of chemical additives including retention aids. Thus it is imperative to employ a retention systems that maintains its efficiency in closed papermaking system for reducing fresh water consumption. The performance of four different microparticle retention systems including cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM)/bentonite, highly charged cationic starch (HCS)/silica, C-PAM/micropolymer, cationic guar gum (CGG)/silica was evaluated and compared at three different levels of papermaking system closure. Buildup of detrimental substances in a closed white water system increased cationic demand and finally reduced the performance of retention systems. Cationic starch and guar gums maintained their effectiveness in retention in closed white water systems contaminated with anionic trashes because of their structural rigidity and hydrogen bonding ability. Particularly, cationic guar gums, due its stiffness of molecular structure, appeared perform better than catinonic starch.

  • Nanotechnology is the creation and utilization of materials, devices, and systems through the control of matter on the nanometer-length scale, that is, at the level of atoms, molecules, and supramolecular structures. The essence of nanotechnology is the ability to work at these levels to generate larger structures with fundamentally new molecular organization. These nanostructures, made with building blocks understood from first principles, are the smallest human-made objects, and they exhibit novel physical, chemical, and biological properties and phenomena. The aim of nanotechnology is to learn to exploit these properties and efficiently manufacture and employ the structures. Control of matter on the nanoscale already plays an important role in scientific disciplines as diverse as physics, chemistry, materials science, biology, medicine, engineering, and computer simulation. This paper describes the superprecision nano separator to productive particle size of nano powder. this separator system is very important in the industrial area for other high technology parts.

  • In the air-fuel control of automotive engine to improve its efficiency, fuel economy and less emissions, conventional control methods using $O_{2}$ sensor or the lean air-fuel ratio sensor provide only open control in rich conditions. Control with a wide range air-fuel sensor makes it possible to employ closed loop control for all engine conditions including rich combustion. With a wide range A/F sensor and A/F transfer functions, a PID control system is constructed which employs an learning scheme. A/F controller is designed which enables to improve the ability of its compensation for sensors and actuators, and its control operation is evaluated by computer simulation.

  • CpG is the pair of nucleotides C and G, appearing successively, in this order, along one DNA strand. It is known that due to biochemical considerations CpG is relatively rare in most DNA sequences. However, in particular subsequences, which are a few hundred to a few thousand nucleotides long, the couple CpG is more frequent. These subsequences, called CpG islands, are known to appear in biologically more significant parts of the genome. The ability to identify CpG islands along a chromosome will therefore help us spot its more significant regions of interest, such as the promoters or 'start' regions of many genes. In this respect, I developed the CpG islands search tool, CpG Islands Detector, which was implemented in JAVA to be run on any platform. The window-based graphical user interface of CpG Islands Detector may facilitate the end user to employ this tool to pinpoint CpG islands in a genomic DNA sequence. In addition, this tool can be used to highlight potential genes in genomic sequences since CpG islands are very often found in the 5' regions of vertebrate genes.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved speech/music discrimination method based on a feature combination and dimensionality reduction approach. To improve discrimination ability, we use a feature based on spectral duration analysis and employ the hierarchical dimensionality reduction (HDR) method to reduce the effect of correlated features. Through various kinds of experiments on speech and music, it is shown that the proposed method showed high discrimination results when compared with conventional methods.

  • In the soft drink industry, especially small and medium enterprises in Japan, there is a possibility of conversion from a labor-intensive industry to a capital-intensive. The demand for soft drinks may not be satisfied in the summer because the supply is too low to meet the demand. To address this situation, this paper proposes optimal investment that integrates demand uncertainty, based on real options approach (ROA) and seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average. Two alternative options are compared and evaluated. One is the Bermudan option: to employ additional workers to elevate efficiency in summer and laying off in winter, this attitude is repeated each year. The other is the American option: to replace equipment to increase machine ability throughout the year. Results in ROA show that the highest improvement is gained if the two options are in a symbiotic relationship. Soft drink producers should search for replacing equipment, using the employees repeatedly. A temporary decision is not equal to an infinite decision.
