  • This work was performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the circular fin-tube heat exchanger. This paper contains the experimental data for the seven kinds of fin geometries. The correlation of Stasiulevicius agreed with the experimental data at high Reynolds number, however not well at low Reynolds number. The Nusselt number was well correlated with Graetz number, and showed a transition near Gz=10. An empirical correlation proposed in the present work agreed well with the experimental data.

  • This paper presents an efficient approach to generate a new empirical formula to predict the axial compression capacity (ACC) of circular concrete-filled tube (CCFT) columns using the artificial neural network (ANN). A total of 258 test results extracted from the literature were used to develop the ANN models. The ANN model having the highest correlation coefficient (R) and the lowest mean square error (MSE) was determined as the best model. Stability analysis, sensitivity analysis, and a parametric study were carried out to estimate the stability of the ANN model and to investigate the main contributing factors on the ACC of CCFT columns. Stability analysis revealed that the ANN model was more stable than several existing formulae. Whereas, the sensitivity analysis and parametric study showed that the outer diameter of the steel tube was the most sensitive parameter. Additionally, using the validated ANN model, a new empirical formula was derived for predicting the ACC of CCFT columns. Obviously, a higher accuracy of the proposed empirical formula was achieved compared to the existing formulae.

  • In this paper, we studied about several methods of testing hypothesis of correlation, specially Approximate method, Empirical method and Bootstrap method. The Approximate method is based on the Fisher's Z-transformation and the Empirical and Bootstrap methods approximate the distribution of the sample correlation coefficient by Monte Carlo simulation and Bootstrap technique, respectively. In order to compare how good these tests are, we computed powers under various alternatives. Consequently, we see that the Approximate test performs very well even if in small sample and all tests have almost the same power in large sample.

  • This study was carried out to examine the prediction of ship's manoeuvrability in initial design stage. New parameter representing basic hull form and stem shape were proposed. Captive model test were carried out to investigate the correlation coefficient between hydrodynamic coefficient and hull parameter. The results showed which parameter are positive correlation with hydrodynamic coefficient. Moreover correlation was examined between stem hull shape and ship's manoeuvrability. New empirical formulas for hydrodynamic coefficients were proposed These results can be used to predict a ship's manoeuvrability in initial design stage.

  • The goal of this study is to present an external pit corrosion rate($p_{ecr}$) model with considering both the age of pipe and the soil characteristics. The correlation of nonlinear exponential model among conventional empirical models was a little higher than other empirical models in the prediction of $p_{ecr}$ according to the age of pipe. However, there has been a limit to predict Peer with the model by using only a pipe age since installation as a variable. The soil analysis results from sixty nine samples showed that all of the samples were non corrosive in the assessment of ANSI/AWWA scoring system. The correlation of soil corrosion factors and $p_{ecr}$ was also low. The application result of linear and nonlinear regression models that soil characteristics only showed a low correlation with $p_{ecr}$ Proposed nonlinear regression model in this study, with considering both the age of pipe and the soil characteristics, showed a little higher correlation ($R^2=0.46$) than conventional model.

  • The poisson's ratio was obtained from the effective vertical stress and horizontal stress of consolidation-undrained test. It was analyzed void ratio verse poisson's ratio. At the result, the effective friction angle was increase with relative density increased, was decreased the poisson's ratio. The empirical equation of void ratio and poisson's ratio was showed very high correlation r2=0.846. The empirical equation was showed that the smaller the void ratio in the fine grained soil than granular soil. In the case of 0.85 times the correlation analysis equation of granular and fine grained soil, the experimental results were shown very similarly. In especially, the poisson's ratio prediction results was shown within 5% of the error range, was revalidation 0.85 times the correlation analysis equation using the void ratio. In this study, correlation analysis equation of the granular and fine grained soil was more reliability of the poisson's ratio prediction results apply to the void ratio than dry unit weight.

  • Objectives: This paper aims to serve as a useful guide for sample size determination for various correlation analyses that are based on effect sizes and confidence interval width. Materials and Methods: Sample size determinations are calculated for Pearson's correlation, Spearman's rank correlation, and Kendall's Tau-b correlation. Examples of sample size statements and their justification are also included. Results: Using the same effect sizes, there are differences between the sample size determination of the 3 statistical tests. Based on an empirical calculation, a minimum sample size of 149 is usually adequate for performing both parametric and non-parametric correlation analysis to determine at least a moderate to an excellent degree of correlation with acceptable confidence interval width. Conclusions: Determining data assumption(s) is one of the challenges to offering a valid technique to estimate the required sample size for correlation analyses. Sample size tables are provided and these will help researchers to estimate a minimum sample size requirement based on correlation analyses.

  • For Halon-1301 regulated by Montreal Protocol and $CO_2$as its alternatives, the empirical equations of density, viscosity, and enthalpy were correlated in terms of temperature. They were obtained by regression analysis from the experimental data in the literature. The empirical equation of density was expressed as compressibility factor by the second- order function of temperature. The empirical equation of viscosity was formulated as a power function, and a correction factor was considered to cover the wider range of temperature. Finally, heat capacity as well as enthalpy were well fitted by empirical form of the second-order temperature. The correlation coefficients of the empirical equations in this work were more than 0.99.

  • As wind farm outputs depend on natural wind resources that vary over space and time, spatial correlation analysis is needed to estimate power outputs of wind generation resources. As a result, geographic information such as latitude and longitude plays a key role to estimate power outputs of spatially distributed wind farms. In this paper, we introduce spatial correlation analysis to estimate the power outputs produced by wind farms that are geographically distributed. We present spatial correlation analysis of empirical power output data for the JEJU Island and ERCOT ISO (Texas) wind farms and propose the Correlation Decay Distance (CoDecDist) model based on geographic correlation analysis to enhance the estimation of wind power outputs.
