Diesel engines which emit a lot of PM and NOx have been known as a main air polluter. Especially, diesel particulate matters (OPM) including black smoke are hazardous air pollutants to human health and environment. The nations retaining advanced engine technologies have reinforced emission regulations. To meet these regulations diesel engine manufacturers have developed low-emission diesel engines, aftertreatment equipments, alternative fuel technologies and so on. In this study, particle number concentrations characteristics according to particle size and engine driving conditions were analyzed when these low-emission technologies were applied. There was a tendency of increasing particle number concentrations from heavy-duty diesel engines with increasing engine rpm and load rate. In the cases of COPF (Catalytic Diesel Particulate Filter), CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine and ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) more than 99% of particle number concentration were removed.
The films of Er-doped ZnO (ZnO:Er) were prepared onto MgO wafers by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis at $550^{\circ}C$. The concentration of Er in the deposition source varied from 0.5 wt% to 3.0 wt%. The crystallographic properties and surface morphologies of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. The properties of photoluminescence (PL) for the films were investigated by dependence of PL spectra on the Er concentration in the films. The films were grown as polycrystalline with a dominant direction of [002]. The grain size of the films were reduced by Er-doping. Er-doping enhanced the ultraviolet emission of ZnO:Er films. The ZnO:Er films prepared with the deposition source of 2.0 wt% Er showed the strongest ultraviolet light emission peak among the films in this study.
In the present study, space allocation methods of pollutant emission from area and mobile sources are assessed by the actual application to air quality modeling of Pohang area. It is found that the TM-based modeling which allocates emission onto the 1km x 1km sized TM-grid system predicts almost the same mean ground-level concentration as that by the GIS-based modeling which uses geographical information of area and mobile sources directly, while maximum ground-level concentration by the TM-based modeling is predicted considerably lower than that by the GIS-based modeling. Moreover, the problem is found that the TM-based modeling causes deviation of mobile roads. In conclusion, it is anticipated to applying GIS-based modeling for a more accurate assessment of air quality in local scale.
A multi-cylinder four cycle spark ignition engine equipped with on exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) system to reduce nitric oxide emission and to improve fuel consumption rate has been comprehensively simulated In a computer program including intake and exhaust manifolds. To achieve these goals, this program was tested against experiments performed on a standard production four cylinder four cycle gasoline engine with EGR system. As EGR rate Increased, the maximum temperature of combustion chamber and NO omission concentration decreased under each driving condition. But the emission concentration of CO didn't change much through whole district in spite of the increase of EGR rate. Fuel consumption rate improved under each driving condition according to the increased of EGR rate until 10 percent EGR rate. Therefore the degree of EGR depend not only on the NO emission but also on the economy and the engine performance criteria of the engine.
An experimental study of a dual swirl burner was conducted to analyze NOx emission in the lean conditions. The dual swirl burner is composed of a combination of swirling jet premixed(main section) and diffusion flames(pilot section). It was operated with a co-swirling configuration and overall equivalence ratios between 0.6 and 0.8. The purpose of this study is to analyze experimentally the characterization of flame temperature and NOx concentration in reacting zone and to supply the useful experimental data for numerical simulations. The measurements of temperature and NOx concentration were captured using a thin digitally-compensated thermocouple and a sampling quartz probe with quenching effect of sudden expansion, and were measured by the NOx analyzer of chemiluminescence method. We could analyse the NOx emission characteristics comparing the temperature distributions in the lean equivalence ratios.
This study aims to evaluate the performance of the Air Quality Model (AQM) for the seasonal and spatial distribution of the $NH_3$ concentration in the atmosphere. To obtain observational data for the model validation, observations based on biweekly sampling have been conducted using passive samplers since April 2015 at multiple monitoring sites in the Tokyo metropolitan area. AQM, built based on WRF/CMAQ, was applied to predict the $NH_3$ concentration observed from April 2015 to March 2016. The simulation domain includes the Kanto region, which is the most densely populated area in Japan. Because the area also contains large amount of livestock, especially in its northern part, the density of the $NH_3$ emissions derived from human activities and agriculture there are estimated to be the highest in Japan. In the model validation, the model overestimated the observed $NH_3$ concentration in the summer season and underestimated it in the winter season. In particular, the overestimation in the summer was remarkable at a rural site (Komae) in Tokyo. It was found that the overestimation at Komae was caused by the transportation of $NH_3$ emitted in the northern part of the Kanto region during the night. It is suggested that the emission input used in this study overestimated the $NH_3$ emission from human sources around the Tokyo suburbs and agricultural sources in the northern part of the Kanto region in the summer season. In addition, the current emission inventories might overestimate the difference of the agricultural $NH_3$ emissions among seasons. Because the overestimation of $NH_3$ in the summer causes an overestimation of $NO_3{^-}$ in $PM_{2.5}$ in the AQM simulation, further investigation is necessary for the seasonal variation in the $NH_3$ emissions.

The aim of this study was to evaluate methane emission flux based on spatial methane concentration using laser methane detector, and geospatial methodology (Inverse distance weighting) at a landfill. The obtained results showed that the spatial methane concentrations were in good agreement with the methane emission fluxes. Thus, it was concluded that the methane emission flux could be derived from spatial methane concentrations. In addition, the results of the geospatial calculations showed that 12.85% of the total area contributed more than 42.21% of total flux. This suggested that the geospatial methodology might be essential in chamber method to determine accurate methane emission fluxes from landfills.
Odor dispersion around a cubic building from rooftop odor emissions was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The Shear Stress Transport (here after SST) $k-{\omega}$ model in FLUENT CFD code was used to simulate the flow and odor dispersion around a cubic building. The CFD simulations were performed for three different configurations of cubic buildings comprised of one building, two buildings or three buildings. Five test emission rates were assumed as 1000 OU/s, 2000 OU/s, 3000 OU/s, 4000 OU/s and 5000 OU/s, respectively. Experimental data from wind tunnels obtained by previous studies are used to validate the numerical result of an isolated cubic building. The simulated flow and concentration results of neutral stability condition were compared with the wind tunnel experiments. The profile of streamline velocity and concentration simulation results show a reasonable level of agreement with wind tunnel data. In case of a two-building configuration, the result of emission rate 1000 OU/s illustrates the same plume behavior as a one-building configuration. However, the plume tends to the cover rooftop surface and windward facet of a downstream building as the emission rate increases. In case of a three-building configuration, low emission rates (<4000 OU/s) form a similar plume zone to that of a two-building configuration. However, the addition of a third building, with an emission rate of 5000 OU/s, creates a much greater odorous plume zone on the surface of second building in comparison with a two-building configuration.

Photochemical air quality models are essential tools in predicting future air quality and assessing air pollution control strategies. To evaluate air quality using a photochemical air quality model, emission inventories are important inputs to these models. Since most emission inventories are provided at a county-level, these emission inventories need to be geographically allocated to the computational grid cells of the model prior to running the model. The conventional method for the spatial allocation of these emissions uses "spatial surrogate indicators", such as population for mobile source emissions and county area for biogenic source emissions. In order to examine the applicability of such approximations, more detailed spatial surrogate indicators were developed using Geographic Information System(GIS) tools to improve the spatial allocation of mobile and boigenic source emissions, The proposed spatial surrogate indicators appear to be more appropriate than conventional spatial surrogate indicators in allocating mobile and biogenic source emissions. However, they did not provide a substantial improvement in predicting ground-level ozone(O3) concentrations. As for the carbon monoxide(CO) concentration predictions, certain differences between the conventional and new spatial allocation methods were found, yet a detailed model performance evaluation was prevented due to a lack of sufficient observed data. The use of the developed spatial surrogate indicators led to higher O3 and CO concentration estimates in the biogenic source emission allocation than in the mobile source emission allocation.llocation.
The diesel engine, which has high compression ratio than other heat engines, has been using as the main power source of marine transport. Especially, since marine diesel engines offer better specific fuel consumption (SFC), it is environment-friendly compared to those used in other industries. However, attentio should be focused on emissions such as nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) which is generated from combustion of low-grade fuels. Because $N_2O$ in the atmosphere is very stable, the global warming potential (GWP) of $N_2O$ is 310 times as large as that of $CO_2$, and it becomes a source of secondary contamination after photo-degradation in the stratosphere. It has been hitherto noted on the $N_2O$ exhaust characteristics from stationary power plants and land transportations, but reports on $N_2O$ emission from the marine diesel engine are very limited. In this experimental study, a author investigated $N_2O$ emission characteristics by using changed diesel fuel components of nitrogen and sulfur concentration, assessed on the factors which affect $N_2O$ generation in combustion. The experimental results showed that $N_2O$ emission exhibited increasement with increasing of sulfur concentration in fuel. However, all kinds of nitrogen component additives used in experiment could not change $N_2O$ emission.
