  • Adult eclosion and emergence behavior of the black pine base scale, Matsucoccus thunbergianae Miller and Park, was studied in a laboratory. Adult eclosion in males did not appear to be limited to a specific time of the day. Newly molted male adults, at room temperatures, usually remained in the cocoons as pre-emergence adults for 0.5-20. days before emerging; most males emerged within one hour after the onset of photophase, and emergence was faster at higher light intensity. Most females molted into adults within three hours after the onset of photophase, and they were active immediately after molting. Quiescence in males appears to help the scales concentrate their sexual activity within a particular period of the day as well as to protect newly molted adults until sexual and locomotive maturity.

  • We investigated the effect of constant photoperiod (16L : 8D, 12L : 12D, 8L : 16D), on the oviposition, parasitism, and emergence of Trichogramma dendrolimi. Also during 16L : 8D condition circadian, oviposition and emergence of this species on artificial eggs were checked every 2hrs. When twelve eggs of Antheraea pern~i and artificial eggs were provided, the wasps had the highest rate of oviposition in the first day, and decreased dramatically there after. In these different photoperiod, the total oviposition numbers per A. pernyi eggs by the wasp were 161.8 in 16L : 8D, 145.8 in 121 : 12D and 128.5 in 8L : 16D respectively in the first day. On the other hand for the artificial egg in 16L : 8D photoperiod, the total oviposition number per egg was 106.8 in the first day, 26.6 in the 2nd day and 21.3 in the 3rd day. The rate of emergence from A. pernyi eggs was not different depend on wasp's day age, however in the artificial eggs, after the first day's 84.7% decreased considerably. The emergence rate from artificial eggs was the highest comparatively between 04:OO-0600 hours.

  • This study was performed to investigate the emergence timing and daily emergence from the different tree species logs (Korean white pine, Pine, and Japanese larch) at Cheongwon, Chungcheongbuk-do from 2006 to 2008. Pine sawyer adults began to emerge on early May (2${\sim}$10th day) and finished on mid-June (4${\sim}$20th day) in the Korean white pine and pine logs. However, pine sawyer adults began to emerge on mid-May (13th day) and finished late May (27th day) in Japanese larch logs, Japanese larch logs shows shorter emergence timing of pine sawyer adult compare to those of other two tree species. Emergence timing shows no difference between males and females. Sex ratios of emerged adult in 2007 were 0.55 from Korean white pine, 0.46 from Pine, and 0.59 from Japanese larch; it shows no difference among tree species. Female and male adults emerged throughout 24 hrs; 22.8% of the total adults emerged from 12${\sim}$14:00 (22.8%) and adults emerged lowest from 06${\sim}$08:00. Of the adults emerged from the logs, 98.9% was univoltine and the rest was biennial which emerged next year.

  • Three naked and three malting barley cultivars were grown at constant temperatures of 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 and 28$^{\circ}C$, and day/night temperatures of 6/2, 10/6, 14/10, 18/14, 22/18, 26/22 and 30/26$^{\circ}C$ through the fourth leaf stage in growth chambers to determine the effects of the temperature on leaf emergence rate and phyllochron in naked and malting barley seedlings. The number of leaves per main stem was recorded daily from the first leaf stage to the fourth. At a given temperature, the emergence of new leaves was a linear function of time for all cultivars. There were no great differences in leaf emergence rate and phyllochron between constant and variable day/night temperature regimes except at 28$^{\circ}C$. Leaf emergence rate and phyllochron significantly differed among cultivars and among mean temperatures within cultivars. For all cultivars, leaf emergence rate per day increased parabolically with increasing mean air temperature until an optimum temperature was reached and then declined. There were no differences in the optimum temperatures for the leaf emergence rate per day among six cultivars, which ranged 20.1 to 21.5$^{\circ}C$. The leaf emergence rates at the optimum temperatures ranged 0.202 to 0.226 leaves / day for naked barley cultivars and 0.231 to 0.241 leaves / day for malting barley cultivars. As temperature increased, leaf emergence rate per GDD decreased exponentially and the phyllochron (GDD/leaf) increased exponentially. The mean of the phyllochron for six cultivars was 46.2 GDD at 4$^{\circ}C$ and 129.3 GDD at 28$^{\circ}C$. These results suggest that the temperature and cultivar effects must be considered for prediction of leaf development in barley.

  • Receptivity of corn silk to pollen decreases with time. For effective pollination, it is important to study the receptivity of corn silks in relation to time elapsed after their emergence. Two commercial corn hybrids, 'Kwanganog' and 'Suwon 19', were tested for their silk growth and effects of delayed pollination on kernel development for 1 to 13 days after emergence of the first silk. Silks elongated rapidly for the first 3 days and then gradually decreased. Silks grew more than 30mm per day for the first 3 days and stopped growing on the 11 or 12th day after emergence of the first silk. Filled ear length decreased slowly for the first 8 days, and then decreased rapidly. Similar trends were observed for number of kernel rows and number of kernels per row or ear. The highest numbers of kernels per row or ear were observed when plants were pollinated 2-4 days after silking. These numbers decreased gradually up to 8 days, and then decreased sharply. This result indicates that 8 day-delayed pollination has no influence on kernel development. There were negative correlations between silk length and ear characteristics except kernel weight. Silk growth rate was positively correlated with filled ear length, row number, and kernel number. It might be assumed that delayed pollination by one week after the first silk emerged would not affect on kernel set.

  • The present study elucidates of the effect of less water stress in different temperature condition on the emergence of forage grasses. Water condition was controlled to 30% and 60% by water content by wet soil. The mean temperature is conducted by $10^{\circ}C$ (out side) and $20^{\circ}C$ (glass house). The results are as follows: 1. Mean emergence time and emergence day after sowing of grasses were greatly influenced by water content of soil and temperature. It was suggested that temperature was very important for the light competition with weed in the early growth of grass. 2. Accumulatied emergence of grasses was nat afected by temperature, but it was sensitively affected by water content of soil.

  • Indoor seed treatments to elevate seedling emergence should be of value. The study was done to model the presown treatments of Platycodon grandiflorum seeds by evaluating the treatment effects of priming,$GA_3$, drying and water imbibition after drying on their germination and then their successive seed treatments on the basis of its seedling emergence. after priming using $Ca(NO_3)_2\;and\;GA_3$ treatment under their different concentrations and light quality illuminated for 12 hours a day were done separately and their two best results were compared to determine the better one, drying of imbibed seeds using the above best result and water imbibition of the dried seeds were successively done to check the rates of germination and emergence. In each treatment of priming and $GA_3$, the former best germination occurred at $Ca(NO_3)_2$ 150 mM done under 2 day darkness but the latter one did at 0.01 mM done under 12 hour a day red light forced for 3 days. Of the two best results from priming and $GA_3$ treatments, the latter result was shown higher germination rate. $GA_3$ treated seeds were best desiccated under $35^{\circ}C$ and 4 hour red light illumination. The germination rate of seeds dried after $GA_3$ treatment was enhanced as imibibed 2 days immediately before sowing. Seedling emergence of all 3 successive treatments, $GA_3$, drying and water imbibition before sowing was the greatest than the two others, only $GA_3$ treatment and the combination of $GA_3$ and drying, in which indicated that its presown seed treatment must follow the successive procedure of the above 3 ones.

  • Many publications of ecocritical research papers and translations of ecocriticism occur in Vietnam in recent years. This paper examines ecocritical scholarly writing in Vietnam, understanding how it corresponds to-reflects and attends to-contemporary Vietnamese society and politics. Specifically, this paper contextualizes Vietnamese ecocriticism in contemporary social and political concerns-embodied in journalistic and administrative documents-about the modernity-oriented postcolonial nation-building of Vietnam. In revealing critiques of political and social degenerations implied in ecocritical writings in Vietnam, this paper suggests that the emergence of ecocriticism in present-day Vietnam indicates a recent "political turn." More importantly, such emergence reflects and engages with the continuing Marxist perspective of literature as an instrument for social criticism and cultural revolution in Vietnam. Vietnamese ecocritics bear the mission of prophets of the time, public educators, and soul engineers, writing is an act of engaging with and influencing reality. Writing (literary and scholarly) still forms an idealized ideological instrument in the struggles for national homogeneity and sovereignty and social democracy in present-day Vietnam.

  • As a means for year-round rearing of bumblebee, CO$_{2}$ -narcosis time favorable for colony development was identified in Bombus terrestris. CO$_{2}$ -narcosis time divided into five classes: 11 days of adult emergence (A-11), the day of adult emergence (A-0), late pupal stage (LP), middle pupal sta ge (MP), and early pupal stage (EP). In egg-laying characteristics, the oviposition rate of LP, A-11 and A-0 was over 76.0$\%$, but that of MP and EP was less than 61.1 $\%$. At the same time, the days needed to first oviposition shortened to 9.8 10.5 days in A-11, A-O and LP, comparing to 13.7 -16.1 days in MP and EP. The rate of colony foundation, progeny-queen produced and period of colony foundation of A-11 were the best results in among those at different CO$_{2}$-treatment time. The number of worker produced was 109.2 -110.5 in A-H, LP and A-H, comparing to 82.0 - 86.8 in MP and EP. Also, the number of progeny-queen produced of A-H, A-O and LP was 36.1, 41.0 and 71.3, respectively, which corresponded to 1.5 - 3.1 fold higher than MP and EP. Taken these together, CO$_{2}$-narcosis time favorable for colony development was determined to be 11 days of adult emergence. Also, the day of adult emergence and late pupal stage showed a positive effect on the oviposition and colony development in CO$_{2}$-narcosis time.
