  • Pedestrian detection (PD) is an essential task in various applications and sliding window-based methods utilizing HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradients) or HOG-like descriptors have been shown to be very effective for accurate PD. However, due to exhaustive search across images, PD methods based on sliding window usually require heavy computational time. In this paper, we propose a real-time PD method for embedded visual surveillance with fixed backgrounds. The proposed PD method employs HOG descriptors as many PD methods does, but utilizes selective search so that it can save processing time significantly. The proposed selective search is guided by restricting searching to candidate regions extracted from Adaptive Gaussian Mixture Model (AGMM)-based background subtraction technique. Moreover, approximate computation of HOG descriptor and implementation in fixed-point arithmetic mode contributes to reduction of processing time further. Possible accuracy degradation due to approximate computation is compensated by applying an appropriate one among three offline trained SVM classifiers according to sizes of candidate regions. The experimental results show that the proposed PD method significantly improves processing speed without noticeable accuracy degradation compared to the original HOG-based PD and HOG with cascade SVM so that it is a suitable real-time PD implementation for embedded surveillance systems.

  • The multi-core technology has become pervasive in embedded systems. An implementation of the Doppler Beam Sharpening algorithm that improves the azimuth resolution by using doppler frequency shift is possible only in multi-core environment because of the amount of calculation. In this paper, we design of multi-core architecture for a real time implementation of DBS algorithm. And based on designed structure, we produce a DBS image on P4080 board.

  • We propose a protocol for Ethernet-based industrial real-time communication networks. In the protocol, the master periodically transmits control frames to all slaves, and the ring-type network topology is selected to achieve high-speed transmission speed. The proposed protocol is implemented in the form of both firmware and Linux kernel modules. To improve the transmission speed, the MAC address table is disabled in the firmware implementation, and the NAPI function of the Ethernet driver is removed in the Linux kernel module implementation. A network experiment environment is built with four ARM processor-based embedded systems and network operation experiments are performed for various frame sizes. From the experimental results, it is verified that the proposed protocol normally operates, and the firmware implementation shows better transmission speed than the Linux kernel module implementation.

  • As a kind of 2D spatial coordinate transform, image warping is a basic image processing technique utilized in various applications. Though image warping algorithm is composed of relatively simple operations such as memory accesses and computations of weighted average, real-time implementations on embedded vision systems suffer from limited computational power because the simple operations are iterated as many times as the number of pixels. This paper presents a real-time implementation of a look-up table(LUT)-based image warping using an FPGA. In order to ensure sufficient data transfer rate from memories storing mapping LUT and image data, appropriate memory devices are selected by analyzing memory access patterns in an LUT-based image warping using backward mapping. In addition, hardware structure of a parallel and pipelined architecture is proposed for fast computation of bilinear interpolation using fixed-point operations. Accuracy of the implemented hardware is verified using a synthesized test image, and an application to real-time lens distortion correction is exemplified.

  • Recently ARM processor's processing power has been increasing rapidly as it has been applied to consumer electronics products. Because of its computing power and low power consumption, it is used to various embedded systems.( including vision processing systems.) Embedded linux that provides well-made platform and GUI is also a powerful tool for ARM based embedded systems. So short period to develop is one of major advantages to the ARM based embedded system. However, for real-time date processing applications such as an image processing system, ARM needs additional equipments such as FPGA that is suitable to parallel processing applications. In this paper, we developed an embedded system using ARM processor and FPGA. FPGA takes time consuming image preprocessing and numerical algorithms needs floating point arithmetic and user interface are implemented using the ARM processor. Overall processing speed of the system is 60 frames/sec of VGA images.

  • In this paper, we propose a hypervisor for embedded systems based on ARM microprocessor. The proposed hypervisor makes it possible to run several real-time kernels concurrently on a single embedded system by virtualizing its microprocessor. With assistance of MMU, it supports virtual memory which enables each guest operating system has its own address space. Exploiting the fact that most embedded systems use memory-mapped I/O device, it provides a mechanism to distribute an external interrupt to virtual machines properly. It also achieves load balancing through live migration which moves a running virtual machine to other embedded system. Unlike other para-virtualization techniques, minor modifications are needed to run it on the hypervisor. Extensive performance measurement studies are conducted to show that the proposed hypervisor has enough potentiality of its real-world application.
