In this study, a series of geotechnical centrifugal tests were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of settlement control of two types of rigid pile structure embankments (PRSE) in collapsible loess under high-speed railway embankments. The research results show that ground reinforcement is required to reduce the post-construction settlement and settlement rate of the embankments. The rigid pile structure embankments using rigid piles can substantially reduce the embankment settlement in the construction of embankments on collapsible loess, and the efficiency in settlement reduction is affected by the pile spacing. The pile-raft structure embankments (PRSE) have much stronger ability in terms of the effectiveness of settlement control, while the pile-geogrid structure embankments (PGSE) provides rapid construction as well as economic benefits. Rational range of pile spacing of PRSE and PGSE are suggested based on the requirements of various railways design speeds. Furthermore, the time effectiveness of negative skin friction of piles and the action of pile-cap setting are also investigated. The relevant measures for improving the bearing capacity and two parts of transition zone forms as positive control mean have been suggested.
This study was carried out to safety evaluation, the practical application and improvement of design method of the agricultural reservoir due to raising embankments. Also, it was to compare and analyze the pore water pressure (PWP), seepage (leakage) quantity and piping phenomenon according to high water table and rapid drawdown. The seepage analysis by finite element analysis was used for steady state and transient condition. The pore water pressure distribution for steady state and transient condition showed positive(+) PWP on the upstream slope, it was gradually changed negative(-) PWP on the downstream slope. The PWP in the core ranged from 100 ~ -33 kPa, the seepage line in the incline-type core suddenly decreased towards the lower levels from the higher levels. The PWP according to rapid drawdown is remained in the vicinity of the upstream slope, therefore, it is investigated to be in an unstable state by the slope stability analysis. The PWP after raising embankments showed smaller than in the before raising embankments. It was likely to be the piping phenomenon because the gradients in the before raising embankments showed largely at downstream slope, and the stability for piping in the after raising embankments increased stable state. The seepage quantity per 1 day and the leakage per 100m for the steady state and transient condition appeared to be safe against the piping. It reduced slightly regardless of the transient condition before the raising embankments and it decreased largely about 2.4 times in the early days after the raising embankments.

This paper attempts to qualitatively characterize scour erosion processes near USGS constriction type-I structures with vertical embankments and abutments. The scour dimensions and rates of sand beds around the structure models were measured in a rectangular flume. The test results showed that scour took place at a rapid rate at initial stages, which were followed by a stage of slow and general scour with greater extends. The maximum scour depth was observed near upstream corner of embankments. Empirical relationships for scour dimensions were derived, that were based on the results from a dimensional analysis of scour processes.

The EPS construction method-one kind of the load reducing methods-utilizes the EPS blocks, ultra-light materials whose unit weight is about 1/100 of soils and has been applied to many soft ground sites. It needed 3,000 days to get the 90% degree of the consolidation for the case of 12m high soil embankments on the 30m thick soft clayey foundations. The N value of SPT at this deposit was less than 5. The pack drain was installed to promote the radial consolidations. Although staged embankments were planned, designers failed to get a sufficient stability of the foundation ground. Therefore, the EPS fill method was selected to reduce the load and the construction period. EPS blocks(D-20 model) replaced the upper part of the soil embankments. These complex embankments reduced the ground settlement and the construction period. The possibility of lateral movements of the bridge abutments was checked and the design scheme was reviewed.

In the construction industry, the interest for recycling aggregates is rising as more people demand for alternatives due to lack of supply of natural aggregates and environmental problems. However, in order for recycled aggregates to be used in infrastructures, stability and other factors need to be verified. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze the sensitivity of soil properties to secure slope safety according to various heights of embankment when bottom ash and dredged soil mixture is applied in the embankment. In most cases, all heights were safe for the slide for the embankment whether the water level is full or sudden draw down. The result of the sensitivity analysis revealed that the unit weight of embankments is highest among all factors to be considered. However, the sensitivity of the unit weight became smaller and the sensitivity of the friction angle of embankments increased with the height of embankments. The sensitivity of factors of core materials is very small because the core has weaker physical properties than those of the embankment. The effect of the height for each factor is different for each slope and water levels. The sensitivity of the unit weight of embankments is most affected when the height is 60m in the upstream slope. To conclude, bottom ash and dredged soil mixture can be applied in the embankment and different factors must be considered in different scale because the sensitivity depends highly on the height of embankments.
A method to design a critical height of embankments is presented so as to mobilize fully soil arching in pile-supported embankments. The behavior of the load transfer of embankment weights on pile cap beams was investigated by a series of model tests performed on pile-supported embankments with relatively wide space between cap beams. The model tests explained that the behavior of the load transfer depended very much on the height of embankments, because soil arching could be mobilized in pile-supported embankments only under enough high embankments. The measured vertical loads on cap beams coincided with the predicted ones estimated by the theoretical equations, which have been presented in the previous studies on the basis of load transfer mechanisms according to either the punching shear failure mode during low filling stage or the soil arching failure mode during high filling stage. The mechanism of the load transfer was shifted beyond a critical height of embankment from the punching shear mechanism to the soil arching mechanism. Therefore, in order to mobilize soil arching in pile-supported embankments, the embankments should be designed at least higher than the critical height. A theoretical equation to estimate the critical height could be derived by equalizing the vertical loads estimated by the load transfer mechanisms on the basis of both the punching shear and the soil arching. The derived theoretical equation could predict very well the experimental critical height of embankment.
Pile or column supported embankments have been increasingly employed to construct highway or railway embankments over soft soils. Piles or columns of stiffer material installed in the soft ground can provide the necessary support by transferring the embankment load to a firm stratum using a soil arching. However, there has been reported to occur a relatively large differential settlement between the piles and the untreated soils. Geosynthetic reinforced pile or column supported embankment (GRPS) is often used to minimize the differential settlement. Two dimensional finite element anlyses have been performed on both the column supported embankments and the geogrid reinforced column supported embankments by using a PLAXIS 2D to evaluate the soil arching effect. Based on the results obtained from finite element analyses, the stress reduction ratio decreases as the area replacement ratio increases in the column supported embankments. For the geogrid reinforced column supported embankments, the geogrid reinforcemnt can reduce differential settlements effectively. In additon, the use of stiffer geogrid is appeared to be more effective in reducing the differential settlements.
This paper presents the design chart to evaluate the two-demensional stability of geoteztilereinforcement embankments on soft foundations. The potential failure surface in this study is assumed as the logarithmic spiral curves refracted at the boundary of layers. To facilitate the iterative calculations, a program that determines the geoteztile tensile force for geotextilereinforcement embankments was developed. This program can be used for situations with a variety of soil layers and soil types. And it can be also used for a static or seismic condition. A series of calculations has been made for a schematised situation. The results of these computation are shown in design charts. Considering static or seismic load strate, these charts in the preliminary stage of the design provide a reasonable estimate of geoteztile tensile force for geotextile-reinforcement embankments on softs foundations. In the final swage a more detailed calculation can be made by developed programs.
This paper presents the deterministic model to evaluate the two dimensional stability of geotextile-reinforced embankments on soft foundations. The potential failure surfaces in this study are assumed as the logarithmic spiral curves refracted at the boundary of layers. To facilitate the iterative calculations, we developed a program that determines the geotextile tensile force for an geoteztile-reinforced embankments. This program can be used for situations with a varying number of soil layers and soil types. A series of calculations have been made for a schematised situation. The results of these series are collected in stability charts, which are compared with those by circular potential failure surfaces. Using these charts in an early stage of the design provides a reasonable estimate of the stability of geotextile-reinforced embankments. In a later stage a more detailed calculation can be made by the developed programs.
Full-scale measurements have been made to determine the increase in wind speed over two exposed embankments, one of $23^{\circ}$ slope and 4.7 m in height, the other of $24^{\circ}$ slope and 7.3 m in height. Measurements were made at heights of 5, 10 and 15 m above the upper edge of each embankment and at the same heights approximately 100 m upwind in the lower-level approach fetch. Despite the modest sizes of the embankments, the maximum recorded increase in mean wind speed was 28% and the minimum was 13%; these increase relate to increases in wind loads on structures erected at the top of the embankments of 64% and 28% respectively. The associated increases in gust speeds are estimated at 33% and 18%, which imply increases in gust loading of 77% and 39% respectively. These experimental results are compared with predictions obtained from a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, using three high Reynolds number eddy-viscosity models and estimates from the UK wind loading code, BS 6399: Part 2. The CFD results are generally in agreement with the experimental data, although near-ground effects on the embankment crest are poorly reproduced.
