  • Korea has seasonal weathers which result in the frosting of soil in winter times, and the thawing of soil in spring. These climate characteristics result in the damaging of pavements, due to the repeated freezing and thawing of road pavements during winter and spring. In order to reduce these pavement damages, anti-frost heave layers are being specially installed, however it is being applied based on foreign researches, and therefore result in the waste of national budget. With this study, a database system was constructed for effective management and monitoring of measured temperatures and function data of 2 meters below the embankment, cut slope, and the cutting-embankment boundary, which are 15 regions picked by the frost index diagram. As the study result, an effective storage and management-purpose database was established for easy data searching and downloading for the pavement design engineers.

  • The safety barrier is installed on road embankment to prevent vehicles from falling into road side slope. Among the safety barrier, flexible guardrails are usually installed. The flexible guardrail generally consists of a protection cross-beam and supporting in-line piles. These guardrail piles are installed nearby slope edge of road embankment because the side area of the road is much narrow. The protection cross-beam absorbs impact energy caused by vehicle collision. The pile-soil interaction also absorbs the rest of the impact energy and then, finally, the flexible guardrail system resists the impact load. This paper aims to investigate the pile-soil interaction subjected to impact load using centrifuge model tests. In this study, a single pile was installed in compacted residual soil and loaded under lateral impact load. An impact loading system was designed and developed available on centrifuge tests. Using this loading system, a parametric study was performed and the parameters include types of loading and ground. Finally, the ultimate bearing capacity of supporting pile under impact load was analyzed using load-displacement curve and soil reaction pressure distributions at ultimate were evaluated and compared with previous studies.

  • The frost depth(frost penetration) is used to install anti-frost heave layers in pavement designs. The freezing index is calculated by an annual accumulated value of multiplying the period of time with temperatures below zero, and the corresponding temperature. Therefore, the DAAT(daily average air temperature) calculation method may play an effect on the FI(freezing index). The Weather Observatory used to supply 4 average air temperatures per day, but currently supplies 8 per day. With this study, we divided the southern part(below FI=$350^{\circ}C{\cdot}day$) of the Korean peninsula into 6 areas according to site conditions(low embankment, embankment-cutting slope, and the cutting slope) and established a field measurement system for 15 positions to check the effects on the result of FI according to differing DAAT calculation methods. The air temperatures obtained by the field measurement system was used to calculate and compare the FI. As a result, the freezing index calculated based on the $DAAT_4(T_4)$ is normally greater by 3% than the one on $DAAT_8(T_8)$. In addition, the calibration equation for the freezing index using air temperatures was proposed through the research.

  • It has been pointed out that the collapses of unsaturated road embankments caused by earthquake are attributed to high water content caused by the seepage of the underground water and/or the rainfall infiltration. Hence, it is important to study influences of water content on the dynamic stability and deformation mode of unsaturated road embankments for development of a proper design scheme including an effective reinforcement to prevent severe damage. This study demonstrates dynamic centrifugal model tests with different water contents to investigate the effect of water content on deformation and failure behaviors of unsaturated road embankments. Based on the measurement of displacement, the pore water pressure and the acceleration during dynamic loading, dynamic behavior of the unsaturated road embankments with about optimum water content and the higher water content than the optimum one have been examined. In addition, an image analysis has revealed the displacement field and the distributions of strains in the road embankment, by which deformation mode of the road embankment with higher water content has been clarified. It has been confirmed that in the case of higher water content the settlement of the crown is large mainly owing to the volume compression underneath the crown, while the small confining pressure at the toe and near the slope surface induces large shear deformation with volume expansion.

  • In this study, a temperature distribution sensing method using optical fiber was applied to a large-scale levee experiment, and the applicability of wide-area levee or embankment monitoring technology to observe the changes inside the levee was reviewed. The optical fiber was buried in a large-scale levee, and the temporal and spatial temperature changes were measured according to the water level changes in the reservoir. As the water level of the reservoir increased, the temperature of the embankment slope decreased, and as the infiltration progressed, a change in the spatial location of the temperature change was detected. The temperature change due to embankment infiltration varied depending on the time of the infiltration progress, and the change assumed to be the seepage line could be observed. This study has demonstrated that information about temperature changes inside the levee can be interpreted as the information on the locations that are judged to be relatively vulnerable, investigating the changes in the condition inside the levee.

  • This study proposed a new embankment stability control method to analyze the measurement data on the slope activities of the soft ground, using the Stability Control Index (SCI) obtained from the p-q stress paths. In order to validate this new technique, the data from triaxial compression tests (CU) and field measurement were compared. SCI is calculated from the current path of the effective stress points ($p^{\prime}=p-{\Delta}u$) using the relative position between the Total Stress Path $p_{max}$ and the point of $k_f$ line $p_f$. From this result, the point of effective stress $p^{\prime}(=p-{\Delta}u)$ will have access to the point $p_f$ of $k_f$ line when the pore water pressure occurs or the point of total stress pass $p^{\prime}_{max}$ when the pore pressure dissipates. Thus, the Stability Control Index (SCI) can evaluate quantitatively the safety of embankment from the relative position of the effective stress path.

  • In this paper, the consolidation settlement of the landfill foundation during and after the period of disposal is analyzed using the program CONSOL which can include the influence of waste load and the leachate level into the analysis. the stability analysis of the embankment is also performed under the varied strength of foundation soil which results from the increase of effective stress due to consolidation of the clay under the landfill. The predicted settlement from CONSOL is compared with the field measured settlement. The results show that, when the leachate level increases with the increase of waste height, the increase of the effective stress of foundation clay is negligible and the stability of the slope of the landfill may not be secured as the disposal of the waste proceeds. Several complementary repairworks, e. g. the reduction of current slope of the fill, application of drain methods to stop or reduce !he leachate level are recommended. The predicted settlement consists moderately with the field measured settlement.

  • In this study, the chemical fluid considered is sodium chloride sloutions. The concentrations for the sodium chloride solutions are varied from 0 to 20%. A series of lab oratory triaxial tests are performed on the cylindrical specimens of sand bentonite mixture with different (5, 10, 15%) sodium chloride content solutions. Deformation(elastic modulus, E) and strength (cohesion, c', and angle of friction, f') parameters are obtained from the triaxial tests and they are expressed as functions of conf'ming pressure and sodium chloride solution concentrations. The stress-strain-strength behavior based on the above strength parameters is introduced to the finite element method with a residual flow procedure (RFP). By integrating a slope stability (limit equilibrium) procedure in the finite element method, factors of safety with time are computed.

  • Results of in-situ test, laboratory test and strength prediction method for the soft soil underlain by failed road embankment were compared each other. Comparing cone penetration test results with the field vane test results it can be seen that cone factor is 12. Undrained shear strengths determined from the cone factor which was predicted by prediction equation were smaller than those obtained from field vane tests. Among the prediction methods Jamiolkowsky's method gave close strengths to the measured undrained shear strengths by field vane tests and strength ratio were 0.88~1.23.

  • This study was designed to carry out studies on critical seepage velocity and critical hydraulic gradient using a piping test targeting SM and ML which are widely distributed ahead of and behind the depth of E.L(-)10m in Saemangeum area in order to examine stability of embankment built on the ground vulnerable to piping. The effects of relative densities on critical hydraulic gradient and critical velocity were also compared and analyzed using empirical formula and theoretical formula, and relative densities were set up as respectively 9%, 25%, 50%, and 75% for this experiment. As a result, for critical hydraulic gradient, most of specimens detected piping at lower values than the empirical formula of Terzaghi(1922). It is, therefore, considered that the empirical formula devised by Kalin(1977) or Hayashi(1978) is more reasonable to be conservative. It was also found that critical velocity decreased as relative density increased, and critical velocity predicted was mostly lower than the theoretical formula.
