A structural integrity evaluation program (STEP) was developed for the high temperature reactor design evaluation according to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME B&PV), Section III, Rules for Construction of Nuclear Facility Components, Division 5, High Temperature Reactors, Subsection HB. The program computerized HBB-3200 (the design by analysis procedures for primary stress intensities in high temperature services) and Appendix T (HBB-T) (the evaluation procedures for strain, creep and fatigue in high temperature services). For evaluation, the material properties and isochronous curves presented in Section II, Part D and HBB-T were computerized for the candidate materials for high temperature reactors. The program computerized the evaluation procedures and the constants for the weldment. The program can generate stress/temperature time histories of various loads and superimpose them for creep damage evaluation. The program increases the efficiency of high temperature reactor design and eliminates human errors due to hand calculations. Comparisons that verified the evaluation results that used the STEP and the direct calculations that used the Excel confirmed that the STEP can perform complex evaluations in an efficient and reliable way. In particular, fatigue and creep damage assessment results are provided to validate the operating conditions with multiple types of cycles.
The main purpose of this paper is to establish the high temperature structural integrity evaluating procedures for the next generation reactors, which are to be operated at over 500$^{\circ}C$ and for 60 years. To do this, comparison studies of the high temperature structural design codes and assessment procedures such as the ASME-NH (USA), RCC-MR (France), DDS (Japan), and R5 (UK) are carried out in view of the accumulated inelastic strain and the creep-fatigue damage evaluations. Also the application procedures of the ASME-NH rules with the actual thermal and structural analysis results are described in detail. To overcome the complexity and the engineering costs arising from a real application of the ASME-NH rules by hand, all the procedures established in this study such as the time-dependent primary stress limits, total accumulated creep ratcheting strain limits, and the creep-fatigue damage limits are computerized and implemented into the SIE ASME-NH program. Using this program, the selected high temperature structures subjected to two cycle types are evaluated and the parametric studies for the effects of the time step size, primary load, number of cycles, normal temperature for the creep damage evaluations and the effects of the load history on the creep ratcheting strain calculations are investigated.
This study verified the relationship between fracture mechanics parameters(${\Delta}K,\;K_{max}$) and X-ray parameters ($(\sigma}_r,;B$) for G365 steel at elevated temperature up to $300{\circ}C$. The fatigue crack propagation test were carried out and X-ray diffraction technique according to crack length direction was applied to fatigue fractured surface. The residual stress on the fracture surface was found to increase in low ${\Delta}K$ region, reach to a maximum value at a certain value of $K_{max}$ or ${\Delta}K$ and then decrease. Residual stress was independent on stress ratio by arrangement of ${\Delta}K$ and half value breadth was independent by the arrangement of $K_{max}$. The equation of ${\sigma}_r-{\Delta}K$ was established by the experimental data. Therefore, fracture mechanics parameters could be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.
Fracture behavior of ex-serviced 1Cr-0.5Mo steel was measured at room(24$^{\circ}C$) and elevated(538$^{\circ}C$) temperature and compared with that measured with virgin 1Cr-0.5Mo steel. Compact C(T) specimens were machined from the base and welded test materials. In case of the C(T) specimens of the weld, fatigue precrack was introduced along the fusion line so that a crack growth should occur along the region of heat affected zone. It was observed that the J-R curve of the serviced material was significantly lower than that of the virgin material at room temperature. Brittle fracture was observed in the serviced material. On the other hand at elevated temperature no noticeable difference was found between the J-R curves of the virgin and the serviced material. The measured J-R curves were also compared with those of the 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steel from other literatures. Optical microscopy and SEM examination of the serviced material reveal the carbide in/along the grain boundary which shows material degradation due to long-term usage.

Thermomechanical behavior of Al-Mg-Si alloys have been studied to investigate the effect of microstructural features such as pre-existing substructure and distribution of particles on the deformation characteristics. The controlled compression tests have been carried out to get the basic information on how the alloy responds to temperature, strain amount and strain rate. Then hot forging of Al-Mg-Si alloys has been carried out and analyzed by the comparison with the compression tests. Microstructural features after forging have been discussed in terms of the thermomechanical response of Al-Mg-Si alloys. As already well mentioned, we have found that the deformation of Al-Mg-Si at the elevated temperature brought the recovered structure on most conditions. In a certain time, however, abnormally large grains have been found as a result of deformation assisted grain growth, which means that hot forging of Al-Mg-Si alloys could lead to a undesirable microstructural variation and the consequent mechanical properties such as fatigue strength.

Creep and fatigue tests were carried out on crack growth properties of small surface cracks in 304 stainless steel at 538.deg.C, 593.deg. C and 650.deg. C in air, by using small plate specimens with a small artificial pit. All the data of the crack growth rate per hour obtained in the present tests were correlated with the maximum stress intensity factor, so that the applicability of linear fracture mechanics to the crack growth of surface cracks at elevated temperature was investigated. In the creep test, relatiion of .sigma.$\^$n/.t$\_$f/=C is obtained between failure time and nominal stress at each temperature level, where n has the value of 11-14 depending on the temperature level. In the creep and fatigue crack growth properties of surface cracks at the elevated temperatures, the maximum stress intensity factor, $_{4}$$\_$max/, is some extent applicable parameter to describe the surface crack growth rate under the present experimental conditions. The crack growth rate per hour increases when the holding time decreases, and creep crack growth rate per hour becomes the lowest limit of crack growth rate per hour in this tests.

Powder metallurgy nickel based superalloy has been used in a high temperature part of turbine engine for airplane. The fatigue crack growth behavior was investigated using CT specimens for the materials at room temperature(R.T.), $600^{\circ}C$ and $700^{\circ}C$. The direct current potential drop(DCPD) method suggested by ASTM E647 was used to measure the crack length during fatigue crack growth at various stress ratios. The fatigue crack growth rate at R=0.5 was faster than that at R=0.1 for all temperature conditions and increased with the increase of stress ratio and temperature. Fractography was conducted for analysis of fracture mechanism.

The material properties of crack growth models at an elevated temperature were derived from the results of numerous crack growth tests for Mod.9Cr-1Mo (ASME Grade 91) steel specimens under fatigue loading and creep loading at an elevated temperature. These crack growth models were needed for defect assessment under creep-fatigue loading. The mathematical crack growth rate models for fatigue crack growth (FCG) and creep crack growth (CCG) were determined based on the test results, and the models were compared with those of the French design code RCC-MRx to investigate the conservatism of the code. The French design code RCC-MRx provides an FCG model and a CCG model for Grade 91 steel in Section III Tome 6. It was shown that the FCG model of RCC-MRx is conservative, while the CCG model is non-conservative compared with the present test data. Thus, it was shown that further validation of the property was required. Mechanical strength tests and creep tests were also conducted, and the test results were compared with those of RCC-MRx.
