  • This empirical test of the efficacy of the literature-based reading instruction was conducted with 63(31 male and 32 female) 2nd grade elementary school children. Subjects in the experimental group had 40-45 minutes literature-based reading instruction twice weekly; those in the control group had only basic text reading. Procedures included a pilot study, pre-test, experimental period, and post-test. Research instruments included the Basic Learning Skill Test(Park et al., 1988), the Qualitative Reading Inventory(Leslie & Caldwell, 1990), and the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey(Mckenna & Kear, 1990). Data were graded and scored by each research question and then analyzed with a t-test of differences between the groups. The experimental group showed higher word recognition, text comprehension, and story grammar strategies than the control group. They also showed more improvement in each of these categories than the control group.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the relationship between types and sources of background knowledges of elementary preteachers' questions about astronomy contents in the elementary science text books. Data were extracted from the preteachers' classes established in a university of education. The results are as follows. First, right background knowledges of questions were found in about 58% questions, wrong background knowledges 15%, and no background knowledges 26%. Second, it was found that 'school' as a source of background knowledges was found in 29% questions, 'friend' 21%, 'internet' 14%, 'book reading' 12%, 'others' 9%, 'TV' 7%, 'institute' 4%. In case of the type that right background knowledges have casual relation or correlation with question contents, 'book reading' and 'TV' sources rate increased, but 'internet' and 'others' decreased when compared to total questions. In the type which background knowledges are right and did not have casual relation or correlation with question contents, 'internet' source rate increased and 'friend' decreased. In case of the type that wrong background knowledges do not have casual relation or correlation with question contents, 'friend' and 'TV' sources rate increased, but 'school' and 'book reading' decreased. The type which background knowledges are right and did not have casual relation or correlation with question contents, 'internet' source rate increased and 'friend' decreased. In case of the type of no background knowledges, 'TV' and 'institute' source rate increased, but 'internet' and 'book reading' decreased. Third, the questions in 'Earth and Moon' unit have little background knowledges. The questions in 'solar system and stars' have background knowledges with no relation to the questions. Especially, in the unit 'changes of seasons', right background knowledges were found in more than half questions, but the contents of questions and background knowledges were not connected scientifically.

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain basic information and suggestions needed to measure reading attitude by obtaining the tacit knowledge. For this, a semi-structured interviews were carried out with teacher librarians and elementary school teachers and elementary students in five elementary schools. The results were as follows: Students and Teachers divided standard and attribute for assessing reading attitudes as student's ability, personality and behavioral aspects towards reading. Students were aware of the necessity of reading and accepted a pleasant feeling of reading. However, group of students with low reading skill recognized reading as an academic purpose as compared to other student groups and expressed a negative feeling on reading. Peers, teachers and family members were recognized as figures who make an impact on reading by students and further considered the subject, content and physical attribute of book as important factors. Teachers recognized reading attitude as a concept on attitude about book and book reading. Further they mentioned reading environment, interests, habits, books, and experience as factors affect reading attitude.

  • This study explores reading fluency among elementary school students considering language level and family income(low SES). Forty eight students from 1st to 3rd grades participated in two paragraph reading tasks. Half of the children were from low income family and half of the children had low lexical knowledge. Reading fluency as in the number of correctly read syllables per minute, the total error frequency and error types were used to compare group differences. There were significant differences in the number of correctly read syllables per minute between two income groups and two language groups. There was a significant difference between low income group and non-low income group in total number of errors only when children's lexical knowledge were low. There were no group differences in error types of repetition and omission. Substitution and insertion error seemed to reflect the total error pattern. These results imply the importance of early screening and early involvement for children with low lexical knowledge from low income family. Monitoring and early intervention will support these children's reading development.

  • Various data and methods are necessary to help students understand the science subject, and have interest in it. Most students like cartoons, and more easily memorize their contents. The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of science cartoon reading on the academic achiements, the levels of interests in science and scientific attitudes of elementary students The study subjects were four classes of the 6th grade of G elementary school in U city. Two classes were experimental group and the others were comparison group. The students of the experimental classes were encouraged to read science cartoon related to class contents at the beginning and ending for 5 minutes respectively in instructional time. And those of the comparison classes received general science lesson. The results of this study were as follows. First, the experimental classes encouraged to read science cartoon marked higher average score than comparison classes in post-test and the difference was meaningful (p<.05). This meant science cartoon reading treatment had the effect of improvement of the levels of interest in science of student. Second, the experimental classes marked higher average score than comparison classes in post-test but didn't show meaningful difference. This meant science cartoon reading treatment didn't have the effect of improvement of academic achievement of students in our study. Third, the experimental classes marked higher average score than comparison classes in post-test and showed the meaningful difference(p<.05). This meant science cartoon reading treatment had the effect of improvement of scientific attitudes of students. From the results thus far, we could tell that science cartoon reading had positive effects on the levels of interest in science and scientific attitudes of students in our study.

Reading education must separate from the national language education because of literature centered education in reading education. If reading education was separated from the national language education, students can a n.0, pproach to the other cultural boundary besides other own and exchange their information and ideas. So, reading education must be included to the elective subjects in a independent course or become a compulsory subject in secondary school curriculum. The teacher of reading education must become the teacher librarian who has a firm faith and an intellectual accomplishment. But, teacher-librarian has much disadvantages such as the problems of promotion, the division of qualification between elementary school and secondary school, and a short-term training courses for teacher-librarian. Hence, theses problems music be solved in national administrative level. Recommended reading lists must be provided to the student in order to prevent confusion of the sense of value, to estimate their own reading ability by themselves and to establish life long reading plan. Therefore, both Korean Library Association and the Ministry of Education should re-examine and develop recommended reading lists. Finally, problems of a juvenile delinquency in the post industrial society have to be solved through reading education. To solve the juvenile delinquency problems, adolescents should cultivate their moral character and possesses abundant knowledge through reading education. Then, young adults will grow as sound citizen in the society.
