Pellet Fuel from Wood Biomass (목질바이오매스를 이용한 펠릿연료의 제조)

  • Recently, densified pollet fuel from wood biomass is widely used at North America and Europe as a regenerable and clean carbon neutral bioenergy. High-pressure compaction of sawdust of several species of wood to form a densified fuel was studied. Calorific and elemental analysis were carried out to assess pellet fuels Hot-press process was adopted for compact ion of sawdust and compaction was performed under prescribed condition. Densified fuels were evaluated by its oven-dry density and fines after 5-minute shaking test. The target density and fines of densified fuels were over $1.2g/cm^3$ and below 0.5%, respectively. When the press-temperature is over $60^{\circ}C$ densified fuels with density over $1.2g/cm^3$ and with fines below 0.5% can be produced. And the pressure over $1000kgf/cm^2$ was effect ive for this production.

Characterization of Atmospheric Aerosols Scavenged by Rain Water (강수에 의한 대기 에어로졸 입자의 세정특성)

  • In order to study the scavenging mechanism as a final goal, the characteristics of chemical components in the rain water were examined as a function of the amount of rainfall. The rain drops were collected sequentially with a rainfall interval amount of each 0.1 .sim. 0.5 mm from the beginning of rain. Rain water was separated into the soluble and insoluble components and the concentrations of 15 elements in both components were determined by the PIXE analysis. The elemental cencentrations decreased quickly till about 0.3 .sim. 0.5 mm of rainfall was obtained and then decreased gradually afterward. Fe, Ti, and Si in the aerosol particles caught in rain water were in high insoluble state. In contrast, almost whole of S and Cl were dissolved in rain water.

  • Nanostructured(NS) W-Cu composite powders of about 20~30 nm grain size were synthesized by mechanical alloying. The properties of NS W-Cu powder and its sintering behavior were investigated. It was shown from X-ray diffraction and TEM analysis that the supersaturated solid solution of Cu in W was not formed by the mechanical alloying of mixed elemental powders, but the mixture of W and Cu particles with nanosize grains, i.e., the nanocomposite powder was attained. Nanocomposite W-20wt%Cu and W-30wt%Cu powders milled for 100 h were sintered to the relative density more than 96% and 98%, respectively, by sintering at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in $H_2$. Such a high sinterability was attributed to the high homogeneous mixing and ultra-fine structure of W and Cu phases as well as activated sintering effect by impurity metal introduced during milling.

  • The concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in fine aerosols were determined from the samples collected at the two background sites of Kosan in Cheju Island and Kangwha. Samplings were carried out during the spring and winter of 1996 and the fall and winter of 1997. PM25 particles were collected on the prefired quartz filters for 24 hours and analyzed by the selective thermal oxidation method. The concentrations of OC at the sites were higher than those commonly observed from clean areas around the world, but those of EC at both sites were lower than, or comparable to, other clean areas in the world. Both the OC and EC levels at Kangwha were higher than those at Kosan. According to backward trajectory analysis, most air pollutants collected at the two sites were from China. It was found that the OC and EC concentrations in air masses from southern China were higher than those from northern China.

  • The semiconducting ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ compound has been recognized as a thermoelectric material with excel-lent oxidation resistance and stable characteristics at elevated temperature. In the present work, we applied mechanical alloying(MA) technique to produce ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ compound using a mixture of elemental iron and silicon powders. The mechanical alloying was carried out using a Fritsch P-5 planetary mill under Ar gas atmosphere. The MA powders were characterized by the X-ray diffraction with Cu-K $\alpha$ radiation, thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The single ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ phase has been obtained by mechanical alloying of $Fe_{33}Si_{67}$ mixture powders for 120 hrs or for 70 hrs coupled with the subsequent heat treatment up to $700^{\circ}C$. The grain size of ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ powders analyzed by Hall plot method was 44nm.

  • (N-docosyl pyridinium)-TCNQ(1:1) complex was synthesized by reacting N-docosyl pyridinium bromide and LiTCNQ. This complex was investigated and confirmed by elemental analysis. U.V, I.R spectra. A stability to the dispersion solvent, which is acetonitrile, dichloromethane, benzene, chloroform and acetonitrile-benzene (1:1, V/V) of (N-docosyl pyridinium)-TCNQ(1:1) complex was investigated by U. V spectrophotometer and was confirmed stabilized on acetonitrile, benzene and acetonitrile-benzene(1:1'V/V) for 7 hours. Using ultra pure water as subphase for L-B film deposition, the Y-type L-B film of (N-docosyl pyridinium)-TCNQ(1:1) complex was farbricated. The electrical conductivities on a perpendicular direction of the L-B film were measured to be $5{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}5{\times}10^{-14}$S/cm according to the number of layer.

  • In this research, (3-alkyl benzimidazalium)-TCNQ complexes were synthesized to obtain the necessary components for Langmuir-Blodgett Technique. (3- Alkyl benzimidazolium)-TCNQ complexes were prepared by the reaction of LiTCNQ with 3-alkyl benzimidazolium bromides and the products were confirmed by elemental analysis. FT-IR, UV-Visible spectroscopies. FT-IR spectra of (3-alkyl benzimidazolium) TCNQ(1:2) complexes were characterized by a broad band with a maximum at about $2900cm^{-1}$ appears and were ascribed to electronic rather than vibrational absorption.

  • New anionic oligomeric surfactants, sodium bis(alkyl decaoxyethylene) sulfonated succinates, had been synthesized through the addition reaction of sodium hydrogen sulfite to bis(alkyl decaoxyethylene) maleates. Bis(alkyl decaoxyethylene) maleates were obtained by esterification with maleic anhydride and long chain alkyl decaoxyethylene ethers which were also obtained by addition ethylene oxide 10 mole to straight long chain alcohol with alkyl group having from 10 to 18 carbon atoms, their structure of the synthetic compounds have been characterized with IR. $^{1}H$ NMR and elemental analysis respectively.

  • The space charge and conduction characteristics of chemically modified vinylpyridine (VP) grafted low density polyethylene (LDPE) was investigated. VP grafted LDPE was analyzed by elemental analysis (EA) to confirm the grafting reaction. Homocharge was developed in VP grafted LDPE at low graft ratios and changed to heterocharge with increasing the content of VP. In conduction experiment, current densities of VP grafted LDPE were lower than that of LDPE and VP grafted LDPEs showed almost the same conduction characteristics as vinylpyridine graft ratio increased

  • Functionally graded polyurethane elastomers PUEs/grad. Poly(dimethylammoninum ethylacrylate bromide)(PDMAEA) were prepared by the method of electrophoresis. Results of elemental analysis showed that concentration of PDMAEA had gradient across the thickness(2mm) of the base PUEs. The modified PUEs(PUEs/grad. PDMAEA) containing high concentration of PDMAEA displayed low degree of swelling in benzene which was poor solvent for PDMAEA, and high degree of swelling in water which was good solvent. For the each layer of modified PUEs, glass transition temperature, dynamic storage modulus were stooled by DSC, Rheovibron DDV-IIC dynamic viscoelastomer. The chemomechanical properties of modified PUEs was explored by the electric-stimulus.
