  • The pre-treatment condition affects on the element analysis of inductively coupled plasma (ICP). In this study the pre-treatment condition of ICP has been studied to quantify elements in dog's hair. The hair samples were collected from twelve female Beagles by clipping them into 1 or 2 cm at the back neck. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of elements in hairs were performed by using ICP. By ICP nine elements were qualitatively detected and quantitatively analyzed (Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Na, P, Se, Zn). The measured amounts of elements were compared between 3 step and 2 step procedures which were with and without the acetone based washing step. The quantitative analysis showed that the concentrations of K, Na, P, and Se were significantly decreased in hair samples with acetone-based washing (p < 0.005 or 0.001) unlike those without the acetone-based washing. It implied that some minerals are lost by the acetone based washing during the sample preparation step. Therefore, the acetone based washing process is not suitable for quantifying elements in dog's hair. In addition, the results of qualitative and quantitative analysis were compared. Although there was a difference in absolute values of elemental contents in hair, the results of qualitative and quantitative analysis were significantly correlated each other. This finding suggested that the results of qualitative analysis can be used to monitor elemental contents in dog's hair.

  • In this study, inorganic elemental distribution in Korean adult human tissue of liver, lung, muscle, kidney, rib and thyroid has been investigated. These tissues were collected from human's body within 48 hours after their death according to IAEA's recommended method, dried by freeze drying method and then pulverized. Neutron activation analysis was applied to these samples to determine the concentrations of 5 major elements of Ca, Mg, Na, K, and Cl and 12 trace elements of Mn, I, Sr, As, Br, Co, Cr, Cs, Fe, Rb, Se, and Zn. To confirm accuracy of analytical result was performed using three kinds of standard reference materials and resulted that the relative error is within 10% for the most of elements and the Z-score indicating a performance of analysis is within 2. The elemental distribution shows that the major elements are distributed homogeneously with a specific concentration and that the trace elements shows a distribution of different concentration with kinds of tissue and their age. Particularly, iodine shows higher concentration with 1000 ${\mu}g/g$ in thyroid, and calcium and strontium show the concentration with 15.9% and 84.4 ${\mu}g/g$ in rib, respectively.

  • This work defines user intention according to intention range, and also proposes an interactive sound installation which reflects and varies above features. User intention consists of several decomposition concepts, which are elemental intentions, partial intentions, and a universal intention. And also, each concept is defined as inclusion/affiliation relationship with other concepts. For the representation of elemental intention, we implemented an musical interface, Color note, which represents the colors and notes according to response of participants. We also propose Harmonic Defragmentation (HD), which arranges the partial intentions with harmonic rule. Finally, the universal intention is inferred to the comprehensive direction of elemental intentions. We used Karhunen-Lo$\`{e}$ve(K-L) Transform for the inference. For verifying the validity of our proposed interface, the "Color Note," and the various techniques, we installed our work and surveyed various users for the evaluation of HD and statistical techniques. Also, we commissioned another survey to find out satisfaction measurement which was used for expressing universal intention.

  • This study demonstrated the applicability of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to determine elements (C, H, and O) and their ratios of aerosols, enabling to discriminate various types of carbonaceous aerosols. The elements of carbonaceous aerosols which were collected on Ag membrane filter under Argon environment were successfully detected by using the LIBS. The LIBS responses (emission lines of C, H, and O in the LIBS spectra) to increasing carbonaceous aerosols were evaluated. The sensitivity of emission lines varied with different elements. Limit of detection (LOD) values for C, H, and O elements for aerosols collected on the filter were found to be 3.17 ㎍, 0.15 ㎍, and 2.25 ㎍, respectively. The spectral data (elemental ratios) obtained using LIBS were in reasonable agreements with the nominal atomic ratios (H/C and O/C) of various carbonaceous aerosols. Further, LIBS spectra were investigated by using principal component analysis (PCA) method to identify types of various carbonaceous aerosols. Our results suggested the possibility of the LIBS technique to detect and/or to discriminate various carbonaceous aerosols and to determine their elemental ratios (H/C and O/C).

  • In order to provide fundamental data for developing greenhouse gas emission factor, we investigated power plants in Korea using B-C oil as Energy source. The power plant is a major source of greenhouse gases among the sectors of fossil fuel combustion, thus information of its emission factors is very essential to the establishment of control strategies for the greenhouse gas emissions. The caloric value of fuel was analyzed using calorimeter and the calorific value was 10,419 kcal/kg. The $CO_2$ concentration of flue gas and elemental analysis were conducted using GC-FID and elemental analyzer. The $CO_2$ emission factors from fuel analysis was 75,410 kg/TJ and that from $CO_2$ gas analysis was 94,265 kg/TJ. When compared with IPCC values, the emission factors by the fuel analysis was 2.5% lower, and that by $CO_2$ gas analysis was about 21.85% higher.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the elemental analysis and microhardness of a bioactive material (Activa) and marginal tooth structure after storage in different media. Materials and Methods: Fifteen teeth received cervical restorations with occlusal enamel and gingival dentin margins using the tested material bonded with a universal adhesive, 5 of them on the 4 axial surfaces and the other 10 on only the 2 proximal surfaces. The first 5 teeth were sectioned into 4 restorations each, then stored in 4 different media; deionized water, Dulbecco's phosphate buffered saline (DPBS), Tris buffer, and saliva. The storage period for deionized water was 24 hours while it was 3 months for the other media. Each part was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis for different substrates/distances and the wt% of calcium, phosphorus, silica, and fluoride were calculated. The other 10 teeth were sectioned across the restoration, stored in either Tris buffer or saliva for 24 hours or 3 months, and were evaluated for microhardness of different substrates/areas. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test. Results: Enamel and dentin interfaces in the DPBS group exhibited a significant increase in calcium and phosphorus wt%. Both silica and fluoride significantly increased in tooth structure up to a distance of 75 ㎛ in the 3-month-media groups than the immediate group. Storage media did not affect the microhardness values. Conclusions: SEM-EDS analysis suggests an ion movement between Activa and tooth structure through a universal adhesive while stored in DPBS.

  • Oxovanadium(IV) complexes with salicylaldoxime, o-vanilline oxime, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldoxime, 2-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzaldoxime and 2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldoxime were synthesized. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, electric conductivity measurement, infrared spectrometry, electronic spectrometry, mass spectrometry, and thermal analysis. The results of elemental analysis were well coincided with the theoretical values. The values of molar conductance of the complexes in DMF implicated that the complexes were non-electrolyte. The characteristic stretching frequency of V=O appeared strong band in the range of $980{\pm}20\;cm^{-1}.$ All the complexes showed two d-d transition in visible spectra and two charge transfer transitions in ultraviolet spectra. Results of mass spectrometry of $VO(sal)_2\;and\;VO(van)_2$ indicated two peaks corresponding to vanadium containing ion(I) of 1 : 2(metal to ligand) chelate and a fragment ion(II) of 1 : 1 chelate due to loss of ligand radical from ion(I). The thermal analysis showed the endothermic peak due to the thermal decomposition.
