  • This paper presents a newly suggested calculation method in which an arbitrary quadrilateral element with curved sides is transformed to a normal rectangular one by mapping of coordinates, then the two-dimensional spline is adopted to approach the displacement function of this element. Finally the solution can be obtained by the least-energy principle. Thereby, the application field of Spline Finite Element Method will be extended.

  • In this paper we extend the mixed finite element method and its $L_2$-error estimate for postprocessed solutions by using Crank-Nicolson time-discretization method. Global $O(h^2+({\Delta}t)^2)$-superconvergence for the lowest order Raviart-Thomas element ($Q_0-Q_{1,0}{\times}Q_{0,1}$) are obtained. Numerical examples are presented to confirm superconvergence phenomena.

  • We present an 1-dimensional annular disk element with which natural vibration of a circular plate can be analyzed accurately and facilely. The natural vibration characteristics of a circular plate with free outer boundary are analyzed by using the presented I-dimensional element. Its results are compared with the results obtained by utilizing 2-dimensional 8-node quadrilateral plane element and cyclic symmetry of the circular plate. And also, by comparing with the theoretical results of previous researchers, the accuracy and facility of the presented I-dimensional element are verified.

  • A numerical method fur performance evaluation of LIPCA is proposed using a finite element method. Fully coupled formulations for piezo-electric material are introduced and eight-node incompatible element is used. After verifying the developed code, the behaviors of LIPCA and $THUNDER^{TM}$ are investigated.

  • Superior performance of field consistent eight-node hexahedron element in static bending problems has already been demonstrated in literature. In this paper, its performance in free vibration is investigated. Free vibration frequencies of typical test problems have been computed using this element. The results establish its superior performance in free vibration, particularly in thin plate application and near incompressibility regimes, demonstrating that shear locking, Poisson's stiffening and volumetric locking have been eliminated.

  • In this paper, dynamic collapse behavior of the rectangular tube under impact loading is anlayzed using nonlinear finite element method of shell element. In case of shell element formulation using corotational element coordinates system, dynamic collapse behavior is analyzed without initial imperfection, and with initial imperfection. This paper reveals that the collapse of a rectangular tue without initial imperfection is caused by an error of transformation of the corotational coordinates system.

  • A general-purpose program for automatic two-dimensional finite-element modelling with quadrilateral elements was developed in this research. The conventional looping method employed in the program was introduced with emphasis on a new splitting criterion and a splitting scheme developed for improving the method. Some application examples were given, which show versatility and applicability of the developed program.

  • Initiation and growth of delamination is a great concern of designers of composite structures. Interface elements with de-cohesive constitutive law in the content of continuum damage mechanics can be used to predict initiation and growth of delamination in single and mixed mode conditions. In this paper, an interface element based on the cohesive zone method has been developed to simulate delaminatoin growth of post-buckled laminate under fatigue loading. The model was programmed as the user element and user material by the "User Programmable Features" in ANSYS finite element software. The interface element is a three-dimensional 20 node brick with small thickness. Because of mixed-mode condition of stress field at the delamination-front of post-buckled laminates, a mixed-mode bilinear constitutive law has been used as user material in this model. The constitutive law of interface element has been verified by modelling of a single element. A composite laminate with initial delamination under quasi-static compressive Loading available from literature has been remodeled with the present approach. Moreover, it will be shown that, the closer the delamination to the free surface of laminate, the slower the delamination growth under compressive fatigue loading. The effects of laminate configuration on delamination growth are also investigated.

  • Simple 3, 10, and 30-story buildings with a nonstructural element which is located at roof or near the middle of the building height are selected. Based on 2009 Korean Building Code, the seismic design force applied at the nonstructural element is evaluated. Response spectrum analysis is conducted with the design response acceleration spectrum of 2009 Korean Building Code and the analytical response is compared with the seismic design force from the Code. Furthermore, an artificial earthquake based on Korean design response acceleration spectrum and the 50% intensity of El Centro earthquake, which can be considered as the maximum future earthquake possibly occurring in Korea, are selected to conduct time history analysis. When the period of the nonstructural element is shorter than 0.06 second or longer than that of the 1st period of each building, the Code equations of seismic design force for nonstructural element seems to be appropriate. However, the period of the nonstructural element is close to the one of the building's higher mode periods including the 1st period, seismic force of the nonstructural element might exceed the Code specified seismic design force.
