  • An electrostatic discharge (ESD) or a noise supplied from the outside has an effect on communication between the timing controller (TCON) and the memory element (EEPROM) through the interface between the timing controller and the memory element in liquid crystal displays (LCD). Therefore, we must apply ESD protection methods to LCD operating circuits for a normal operation. Our ESD protection circuit is to prevent from bi-directional communication errors between TCON and EEPROM due to an electrostatic discharge (ESD).

  • This paper reports about the successful suspension of a glass plate by electrostatic forces. In order to implement a stable suspension, the electrostatic forces exerted on the glass plate are actively controlled on the basis of the gap lengths between the glass plate and the stator electrodes. In this paper, the dynamic model of the suspension system and the influence of the resistivity of glass on the system stability are described, followed by stator electrode design, the experimental apparatus and a stabilizing controller. Experimental results show that the glass plate can be suspended at a gap length of about 0.3 mm. The influence of air humidity on the suspension initiation time, and the lateral dynamic characteristic are also described.

  • Recently the electrostatic 2-axis MEMS stages have been fabricated for the purpose of an application to PSD (Probebased Storage Device). However, most of them have low area efficiency, which is undesirable as data storage devices, since all of the components (springs, comb electrodes, anchors, platform, etc.) are placed in-plane. In this paper, we present a novel structure of electrostatic 2-axis MEMS stage that is characterized by having large area platform. For large area efficiency, the actuator part consisting of mainly comb electrodes and springs is placed right below the platform. In this article, the structures and operational principle of the MEMS stages are described, followed by design procedure, structural and modal analysis using FEM(Finite Element Method). The area efficiency of the MEMS stage was designed to be about 55%, that is very large compared with conventional ones having a few percentage.

  • This paper presents a precition control of an electrostatic microactuator. For the generation of sufficient electrostatic force, a donse comb-type electrostatic microactuator is designed and manufactureed via MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) process. The nonlinear plant and the linear plant of the microactuator are established through the comparison of experimental results and simulation results. A feedforward controller is designed via MATLAB simulation using the inverse function of the nonlinear plant. the experiment for the precise position tracking control is undertaken to show the control efficiency of the proposed controller.

  • Electrostatic pressure-swirl nozzle for practical oil burner application has been designed. The charge injection method has been used in this design, where the nozzle consists of a sharp pointed tungsten wire as a charge injector and the nozzle body grounded. The spray characteristics of the nozzles have been investigated by using an insulating liquid, i.e. kerosene without active surface agent. Breakup length of liquid decreased with an increase in applied voltage and injection pressure, while the spray angle increased with an increased in both applied voltage and injection pressure. An empirical equations have been suggested to predict the breakup length for electrostatic pressure-swirl atomizer. The experimental result was within the range of the predicted equations. The SMD decreased between the ranges of 2.8 ${\sim}$ 33% when the conventional nozzle was compared to the electrostatic with -10 kV applied to the electrode at a radial distance from 5 to 20 mm.

  • Carbon nanotubes have attracted much attention as future mechanical and electronic materials. However, manipulating techniques are not well developed yet. Here we propose to use electrostatic drop-on-demand devices to eject micro-droplets containing micelle-suspended single-walled carbon nanotubes. A simple electrostatic force analysis and photographic studies of droplet ejection process are presented. The analytical analysis shows that semiconducting species have higher electrostatic force density. However, enrichment of specific electronic types is not clear at large size droplets produced in this study. A micro-scale jetting device is being produced to prove the suggested behavior.

  • In electrostatic airclean filter, the collection efficiency defends on particle charge in the ionizer section. The effect of electrostatic airclean filter condition (deposition of dust, variation of corona discharge current) on corona discharge characteristics was well studied. However, it seems not to be studied on corona discharge characteristics of electrostatic airclean filter respect to contaminated electrode which is caused by practical use. In this paper, Long-term(60days) effects are studied experimentally by two methods. The one is ozone concentration, the other is collection efficiency. Generation of ozone level was increased but collection efficiency was slightly reduced in long-term used electrostatic airclean filter.

  • Static electricity in electronics manufacturing plants causes the economic loss, yet it is one of the least understood and least recognized effects haunting the industry today. Today's challenge in semiconductor devices is to achieve greater functional density pattern and to miniaturize electronic systems of being more fragile by electrostatic discharges(ESD) phenomena. As the use of automatic handling equipment for static-sensitive semiconductor components is rapidly increased, most manufacturers need to be more alert to the problem of ESD. One of the most common causes of electrostatic damage is the direct transfer of electrostatic charge from the human body or a charged material to the static-sensitive devices. To evaluate the ESD hazards by charged human body and devices, in this paper, characteristics of electrostatic attenuation in domestic semiconductor devices is investigated and the voltage to cause electronic component failures is investigated by field-induced charged device model(FCDM) tester. The FCDM simulator provides a fast and inexpensive test that faithfully represents ESD hazards in plants. Also the results obtained in this paper can be used for the prevention of semiconductor failure from ESD hazards.
