  • Electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers were carbonized with or without iron (III) acetylacetonate to induce catalytic graphitization within the range of 900-1,500$^{circ}C$, resulting in ultrafine carbon fibers with a diameter of about 90-300 nm. Their structural properties and morphologies were investigated. The carbon nanofibers (CNF) prepared without a catalyst showed amorphous structures and very low surface areas of 22-31 $m^{2}$/g. The carbonization in the presence of the catalyst produced graphite nanofibers (GNF). The hydrogen storage capacities of these CNF and GNF materials were evaluated through the gravimetric method using magnetic suspension balance (MSB) at room temperature and 100 bar. The CNFs showed hydrogen storage capacities which increased in the range of 0.16-0.50 wt$\%$ with increasing carbonization temperature. The hydrogen storage capacities of the GNFs with low surface areas of 60-253 $m^{2}$/g were 0.14-1.01 wt$\%$. Micropore and mesopore, as calculated using the nitrogen gas adsorption-desorption isotherms, were not the effective pore for hydrogen storage.

  • Transparent and stretchable conductors are expected to be an essential component in future stretchable optoelectronic devices. Until now, two main methods have been commonly employed to fabricate transparent and stretchable conductors by using metal nanomaterials: creating buckling configurations and creating network configurations. In this report, a novel strategy for obtaining transparent and stretchable conductors is presented, one that employs these two main approaches simultaneously. To the best of our knowledge, this proposed configuration of a buckled long nanofiber network in this study has not yet been reported. In order to provide the transparent conductors with dual mode stretchability originating from simultaneous buckled and network configurations, a buckled Au@polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanofiber network (hereafter referred to BANN for convenience) was fabricated by transferring Au-metallized electrospun PVP nanofibers onto a prestrained polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. Our BANN shows considerably lower strain sensitivity of resistance than that of straight Au@PVP nanofiber network. Durability tests conducted by performing cyclic tensile strain reveal that the relative change in resistance of BANN (prestrain = 20%) is quite small after 1000 cycles. We also demonstrate that this BANN exhibits superior performance over widely used indium tin oxide conductors with regard to high optical transmittance and low sheet resistance.

  • In this study, Nylon 6,6 electrospun (ES) nanofiber filter media were prepared at various spinning conditions. The ES filters tested had no intrinsic electrical charges. The ES filters were triboelectrically charged in the course of filter sample handling, and the charge was drastically decayed in a few hours. On the other hand, the corona charged melt blown filter media showed a permanent electrical charge. The electrical charge state of the ES filters was also examined by comparing collection efficiencies of ES filters for uncharged and charged aerosol particles.

  • In this work, sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) composite membranes including strontium zirconate (SrZrO3) were fabricated by the electrospinning method. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis were used to identify the chemical structure and the crystallinity of SrZrO3 and electrospun composite membranes. The thermal stability of the pure SPEEK and SPEEK/SrZrO3 electrospun composite membranes were investigated by using thermogravimetric analysis. The physicochemical properties and proton conductivity were enhanced with the addition of different weight ratio of SrZrO3 nanofiller (2, 4 and 6 wt%) in SPEEK polymer. The optimized SPEEK/SrZrO3-4 electrospun membrane containing 4 wt% of SrZrO3 showed a high proton conductivity compared to other electrospun SPEEK/SrZrO3 composite membranes. The results indicate that electrospun composite membranes incorporating these perovskite nanofillers should be explored as potential candidates for use in proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

  • Silk fibroin (SF) nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and their application as an enzyme immobilization support was attempted. By varying the concentration of SF dope solution the diameter of SF nanofiber was controlled. The SF nanofiber web had high capacity of enzyme loading, which reached to $5.6\;wt\%$. The activity of immobilized a-chymotrypsin (CT) on SF nanofiber was 8 times higher than that on silk fiber and it increased as the fiber diameter decreased. Sample SF8 (ca. 205 nm fiber diameter) has excellent stability at $25^{\circ}C$ by retaining more than $90\%$ of initial activity after 24 hours, while sample SF11 (ca. 320 nm fiber diameter) shows higher stability in ethanol, retaining more than $45\%$ of initial activity. The formation of multipoint attachment between enzyme and support might increase the stability of enzyme. From these results, it is expected that the electrospun SF nanofibers can be used as an excellent support for enzyme immobilization.

  • Polymeric fibers with nanometer-scale diameters are produced by electrospinning. When the electrical forces at the surface of a polymer solution or melt overcome the surface tension then electrospinning occurs. Polyethylene oxide (PEO), Polycarbonate have been electrospun in our laboratory. Electrospun fibers are observed by optical microscopy or scanning electron microscopy. The average diameters of the electrospun fibers range from 300 nm to 30 nm when the electric field strength increasing from 1 kV/cm to 3 kV/cm. The average diameters of the electrospun fibers range from 200 nm to 30 nm when the concentration decreasing from 10 wt% to 4 wt%.

  • This paper investigated the effect of biodegradation behavior on the oxidation of cellulose nanofiber mats. The cellulose mats were produced through electro spinning. The diameter of an electrospun fiber varied from 90 to 240 nm depending on the electrospinning parameters, such as the solution concentration, needle diameter, and rotation speed of a grounded collector. Oxidized cellulose (OC).mats containing different carboxyl contents were prepared using $NO_2$ as an oxidant. The total carboxyl content of the cellulose nanofiber mats obtained after oxidation for 20 h was $20.6\%$. The corresponding carboxyl content was important from a commercial point of view because OC containing $16-24\%$ carboxyl content are used widely in the medical field as a form of powder or knitted fabric. Degradation tests of the OC mats were performed at $37^{\circ}C$ in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4). Microscopy techniques were introduced to study the morphological properties and the degradation behavior of the OC mats. Morphological changes of the mats were visualized using optical microscopy. Within 4 days of exposure to PBS, the weight loss of the OC mats was $>90\%$.

  • $TiO_{2}$ electrode electrospun directly onto the substrate was developed for energy conversion device. To enhance energy conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cell, electrodes should have higher surface area to absorb more dyes and higher conductivity to reduce recombination of generated electrons. $TiO_{2}$ nanofibers with higher surface areas were fabricated by annealing electrospun $TiO_{2}/PVP$ nanofibers at $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 hrs in air. it was revealed that $TiO_{2}$ nanofiber electrodes is hybrid with MWNT showed higher conductivity than $TiO_{2}$ semiconductor electrode possibly due to band gap change.

  • Zein/Poria cocos extract nanofibers were prepared based on the electrospinning of aqueous solutions with different Poria cocos extract concentrations (0, 5, 10, and 15 wt.%). The electrospinning parameters, including the polymer contents, voltage, and tip-to-collector distance (TCD), were optimized for the fabrication process. The resulting electrospun materials were all characterized using field-emission scanningelectron microscopy (FE-SEM). The diameters of the electrospun zein nanofibers were found to increase when increasing the zein concentration.

  • An image analysis processing method for the measurement of nanofiber diameter was developed. For the analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of electrospun fiber were prepared and applied to the individual measurement of the fiber diameter by using the developed and the traditional manual methods. Both methods provided a similar fiber distribution. The fiber average diameters were similar but the variance of the new method was larger than that of the manual method. The average diameters from the two methods exhibited a linear relationship with a high coefficient. The developed method can be used as a practical tool to estimate the fiber diameter of the electro spun web.
