  • A multiple-electrode-type electronic paper film can implement a single color and control the transparency, as it has multiple electrodes in one cell. Therefore, it can be used as a transparent display. In this paper, we explain the structure and driving method of a transparent electronic paper display, and then propose a control method of transmittance. Subsequently, we verify the theory by measuring the transmittance via experiment. Thus, by changing the manner of applying the voltage to three lower electrodes and one upper electrode, transmittance in eight cases could be realized. It was confirmed that the transmittance derived from the experiment could be controlled from a minimum of 6.75% to a maximum of 71.18%.

  • In this study, the advanced DuoPIGatron-type ion beam (IB) system was applied to inorganic thin film for aligning liquid crystal (LC). LC alignment on $Ta_2O_5$ via IB irradiation was embodied. As a result of IB irradiation, the homogeneously aligned liquid crystal display (LCD) on $Ta_2O_5$ was observed with low pretilt angles. The $Ta_2O_5$ were deposited on indium-tin-oxide coated Coming 1737 glass substrates by rf magnetron sputtering at $200^{\circ}C$. The deposition process resulted in forming very uniform thin film on glass substrates without any defects. To confirm the application of the inorganic alignment on modem display optical devices, we fabricated twisted nematic LCD and measured optical property and response time. As a result of the experiment, the electro optical characteristics of the LCD fabricated by using IB irradiation on $Ta_2O_5$ alignment layer were similar with the other LCD fabricated by using rubbing process.

  • In this paper, an improved computational integral imaging reconstruction (CIIR) is proposed. The proposed method can highly enhance the viewing quality of reconstructed image. To show the feasibility of proposed method, some experiments are performed and the results are compared and discussed with those of the conventional method.

  • Electrowetting phenomenon is applied in the various field of technology. One of that is electrowetting display as a paper like electronic paper. Fast response and easy to express a color is goodness. In spite of that, the oil movement of the electrowetting display is irregular. So it doesn't look like uniform. Because of the above reason, electrowetting display using patterned electrode is made and the characteristic of oil movement is observed. Electrode and polymer wall is patterned by photo-lithography. We analyze the oil movement according to the variation of size and the position of etched electrode area.

  • Volumetric 3D displays generate voxels to enable users to watch three-dimensional virtual objects from various angles, and they have a significant advantage over other types of 3D displays in terms of realism and the absence of vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC). By virtue of these advantages, various volumetric 3D display technologies incorporating novel approaches have been introduced competitively. As a result, the conventional classification criteria for volumetric 3D technology often fall short in categorizing these innovative methods. In this study, we present an improved classification framework capable of accommodating these new technologies. We expect that a new classification may offer some intuition to identify areas of technical deficiency and contribute to improving the technology.

  • For decades, the pursuit of volume commercialization of low-power reflective displays with a paper-like look has been an unfulfilled dream. While steady technical progress was made throughout the late 1990s, there were still no volume products incorporating electronic paper displays (EPD) on the market. Now, microencapsulated electrophoretic display technology, also called electronic ink, has moved into volume production with a frontplane laminate (FPL) display component called E Ink Imaging Film™. This film is coated roll to roll on a flexible plastic substrate and integrated into a display module. Today, all-plastic segmented displays are being shipped as well as displays with electronic ink FPL being driven by glass TFT backplanes. A roadmap to active matrix flexible electrophoretic displays is being enabled by rapid technical progress on flexible TFT backplanes by a variety companies. Each of the approaches to these backplanes and flexible active matrix displays has different advantages for the various market segments being pursued including large format flexible displays for e-news and other reader applications, rollable displays for compact readers, and high resolution small format displays up to 400 ppi that can have fully integrated drive electronics to reduce size and drive down costs. Backplane approaches include Si on plastic, organic transistors on plastic, and Si transistors on flexible stainless steel substrate. Progress is also being made on next generation inks, including more reflective inks with higher contrast ratios. A full color 6 inch, 170 pixel per inch (PPI) active matrix display using a newer generation ink has been developed and this will be described and demonstrated. Large format segmented flexible displays will also be described.
