전자선 조사가 Poly(lactic acid) 및 개질된 Poly(lactic acid)의 유변학적 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Irradiation of Electron Beam on the Rheological Properties of Poly(lactic acid) and Chemically Modified Poly(lactic acid))

  • 본 연구는 생분해성 고분자인 폴리락틱에시드(Poly(lactic acid; PLA)의 가공성을 향상시키는 연구의 일환으로 순수 PLA, 반응압출법에 의한 화학적으로 개질된 PLA 및 기능성 단량체를 함유한 PLA에 전자선을 조사하여 PLA를 개질한 후 유변학적 특성을 조사하였다. 유변학적 특성은 복합점도와 log G' vs. log G" 선도를 이용하여 해석 분석 비교하였다. 그 결과 전자선 조사로 개질된 순수 PLA 및 화학적으로 개질된 PLA의 복합점도는 전자선 조사량에 따라 감소하는 경향을 보였지만, 기능성단량체가 첨가된 PLA는 전자선 조사에 의해 복합점도가 증가하다가 감소하는 경향을 보였다.

  • The treatment of tumors along curved surfaces with stationary electron beams using cone collimation may lead to non-uniform dose distributions due to a varying air gap between the cone surface and patient. For large tumors, more than one port may have to be used in irradiation of the chest wall, often leading to regions of high or low dose at the junction of the adjacent ports. Electron-beam arc therapy may elimination many of these fixed port problems. When treating breast tumors with electrons, the energy of the internal mammary port is usually higher than that of the chest wall port. Bolus is used to increase the skin dose or limit the range of the electrons. We invertiaged the effect of various arc beam parameters in the isodose distributions, and combined into a single arc port for adjacent fixed ports of different electron beam eneries. The higher fixed port energy would be used as the arc beam energy while the beam penetration in the lower energy region would be controlled by a proper thickness of bolus. We obtained the results of following: 1. It is more uniform dose distribution of electron to use rotation than stationary irradiation. 2. Increasing isocenter depth on arc irradiation, increased depth of maximum dose, reduction in surface dose and an increasing penetration of the linear portion of the curve. 3. The deeper penetration of the depth dose curve and higher X-ray background for the smaller field sized. 4. If the isocenter depth increase, the field effect is small. 5. The decreasing arc beam penetration with decreasing isocenter depth and the isocenter depth effect appears at a greater depth as the energy increases. 6. The addition of bolus produces a shift in the penetration that is the same for all depths leaving the shape of the curves unchanged. 7. Lead strips 5 mm thick were placed at both ends of the arc to produce a rapid dose drop-off.

전자선 조사가 분쇄 돈육의 저장 중 산화와 미생물적 안정성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Electron Benm Irradiation on the Oxidative and Microbiological Stability of Ground Pork during Storage)

  • 본 실험 결과를 종합하여 볼 때 전자선의 처리는 돈육의 냉장, 냉동 중 일반세균과 중온균의 증식 억제에 효과가 있는 것으로 밝혀졌으며 전자선의 조사량이 증가할 수록(1.5에서 3.0 kGy로) 그 효과는 더욱 커지는 것으로 나타났다. 본 실험에서 사용한 전자선 1.5와 3.0 kGy는 그 조사량이 매우 낮은 수준이므로 조사량을 증가시키면 살균효과는 증대될 것으로 예상된다. 반면 전자선의 처리가 지방의 산패를 촉진한다는 결과는 충분히 예상한 결과였고 본 실험에서도 전자 건의 조사량이 증가할수록(1.5에서 3.0 kCy로) 산패는 더욱 촉진되었다. 따라서 전자선 처리의 살균 효과를 극대화하기 위하여는 전자선을 조사하여도 돈육의 산패도는 전자선을 조사하지 않은 돈육의 수준으로 유지시킬 수 있는 방법이 필수적으로 연구되어야 할 것이다. 이러한 방법으로는 전자선의 조사 속도를 조절한다든지 공기조절 포장 방법($N_2$, $CO_2$) 과의 병용 등을 들 수 있을 것이다. 전자선을 식품에 활용하는 작업은 그 유용성이 무궁 무진 할 수 있으므로 앞으로도 그 활용이 기대되며 우선적으로 해결해야 할 문제는 전자선 조사에 의 한 지방의 산패를 억제 할 수 있는 방법을 강구하는 것이다.

Effect of Electron Beam and ${\gamma}$-Ray Irradiation on the Curing of Epoxy Resin

  • The effect of an electron beam and ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation on the curing of epoxy resins was investigated. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF) as epoxy resin were used. The epoxy resins containing 1.0-3.() wt% of triarylsulphonium hexafluoroantimonate(TASHFA) and triarylsulphonium hexafluorophosphate(TASHFP) as initiator were irradiated under nitrogen at room temperature with different dosage of EB and ${\gamma}$-rays from a Co$^{60}$ u source. The chemical and mechanical characteristics of irradiated epoxy resins were compared after curing of EB and ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation. The thermal properties of cured epoxy were investigated using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The chemical structures of cured epoxy were characterized using near infrared spectroscopy. Mechanical properties such as flexural strength, modulus were measured. The gel fraction of DGEBA with ${\gamma}$-ray was higher than that of the epoxy with EB at the same dose. Young's modulus of the sample irradiated by ${\gamma}$-ray is higher than that of sample cured by EB. From the result of strain at yield, it was found that the epoxy cured by ${\gamma}$-ray had a higher stiff property compared with the irradiated by EB.

Carboxymethycellulose의 농도에 따른 방사선 분해 연구 (Effect of Concentration of Carboxymethycellulose on Degradation by Radiation)

  • In this study, the effect of the concentration of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) solution on the degradation by irradiation was investigated. The CMC solutions with different concentrations of 3%, 4%, 5%, 6% and 7% were irradiated at the doses of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 kGy with gamma ray or electron beam, and the viscosity of CMC solution was measured. The viscosity of the CMC solutions was decreased with an increase in the irradiation dose, but the extent of the degradation by an irradiation was found to be decreased with an increase of the CMC concentration in the solution. The dependency of the irradiation sources showed that an electron beam radiation had degraded the CMC less severely than gamma ray.

Screening of Radio-resistant Lactic Acid Bacteria

  • This study screened for radio-resistant strains lactic acid bacteria (LAB) by evaluating their capability to survive exposure to ionizing radiation. Ten strains of LAB - Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus delbruekii, Lactococcus lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus, Bifidobacterium breve, and Pediocuccos pentosaceus - were selected and subcultuted twice. The LAB was then further cultured for 3 d at $37^{\circ}C$ to reach 7-10 Log colony-forming units (CFU)/mL prior to irradiation and immediately exposed to gamma rays or electron beams with absorbed doses of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 kGy. Gamma irradiation gradually decreased the number of the tested viable LAB, and the effect was irradiation dose dependent. A similar effect was found in electron beam-irradiated LAB. Radiation sensitivity of LAB was calculated as $D_{10}$ values, which ranged from 0.26 kGy to 0.9 kGy and 0.5 kGy to 1.44 kGy with exposure to gamma and electron beam irradiation, respectively, in all tested LAB. L. acidophilus was the most resistant to gamma and electron beam irradiation, with $D_{10}$ values of 0.9 kGy and 1.44 kGy, respectively. These results suggest that L. acidophilus might be suitable for the preparation of probiotics as direct-fed microbes for astronauts in extreme space environments.

Influence of Electron Beam Irradiation on the Structural, Optical, and Electrical Properties of ZTO/Ag/ZTO Trilayer Films

  • We deposited transparent conductive ZTO/Ag/ZTO trilayer thin films on glass substrates through magnetron sputtering, and then conducted intense electron beam irradiation on their surfaces to investigate the effects of electron irradiation on the structural, optical, and electrical properties of these films. After deposition, we electron irradiated the ZTO/Ag/ZTO films for 10 min at electron energies of 300, 500, and 700 eV. The films that were electron irradiated at 700 eV showed a higher optical transmittance (84.2%) in the visible wavelength region and a lower resistivity ($7.2{\times}10^{-5}{\Omega}cm$) compared with the other films. The figure of merit revealed that the ZTO/Ag/ZTO films that were electron irradiated at 700 eV had a higher optical and electrical performance than the other films prepared in this study.

Synergistic Effects of Electron-beam Irradiation and Leek Extract on the Quality of Pork Jerky during Ambient Storage

  • To investigate the synergistic effect(s) of electron-beam (EB) irradiation and leek (Allium tuberosum Rottler) extract on the quality of pork jerky during ambient storage, we irradiated prepared pork jerky samples (control and samples with 0.5% and 1.0% leek extract) with EB technology at doses of 0, 1, 2, and 4 kGy, stored them for 2 months at $25^{\circ}C$, and analyzed them. Water activity was 0.73 to 0.77 in non-irradiated samples, and no significant difference in the water activity was observed between the samples treated with leek and the control. The total aerobic bacterial count was significantly decreased with an increase in the irradiation dose and leek extract addition when compared to that of the control ($4.54{\pm}0.05$ log CFU/g). Further, the Hunter color values ($L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$) were found to be significantly decreased following leek extract addition and EB irradiation. However, the color values, especially the $a^*$ value of the irradiated samples significantly increased during storage. Notably, increasing the EB irradiation dose enhanced the peroxide value. Sensory evaluation revealed that irradiation decreased flavor and overall acceptability. Our findings suggest the use of EB irradiation in combination with leek extract to improve the microbiological safety of pork jerky. However, in order to meet market requirements, novel methods to enhance the sensory quality of pork jerky are warranted.

공기 조절 포장과 전자선 조사의 병용이 분쇄돈육의 저장 중 산화와 미생물적 안정성에 미치는 영향 (Combination Effect of Modified Atmosphere Packaging and Electron Beam Irradiation on the Oxidative and Microbiological Stability of Ground Pork during Storage)

  • 분쇄 돈육을 $N_2$$CO_2$ 가스로 공기 조절 포장한 후 전자선으로 조사하여(0, 1.5, 3.0 kGy) 돈육을 저장하면서 미생물의 변화와 함께 공기 조절 포장이 전자선 처리에 의한 지방 산화를 억제하는지 관찰하였다. 분쇄 돈육은 공기 조절 포장과 전자선 처리(1.5와 3.0 kGy)후 4$^{\circ}C$에서 6일간 그리고 -15$^{\circ}C$ 에서 3달 동안 저장하면서 주기적으로 미생물 검사와 지방의 산패치를 측정하였다. 일반세균과 중온균의 경우 1.5와 3.0 kGy의 전자선 조사량으로 처리하였을 경우 대조구에 비해 그 증식이 현저히 억제되었음을 관찰하였다. 질소와 이산화탄소를 주입한 포장은 그 자체로도 대조구와 비교하였을 때 저장 중 지방의 산화를 억제하는 데에 큰 효과가 있었으며 또한 공기 조절 포장과 전자선 처리의 병용은 저장 중 분쇄 돈육의 미생물 증식과 지방의 산화를 억제하는데 효과적이었다.
