A study on the Application Effect of Friction Stir Processing for Enhanced Pitting Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steel Welds in Chloride Environment (염화물 환경에서 스테인리스강 용접부의 공식저항성 향상을 위한 마찰교반공정 적용효과에 관한 연구)

  • As temporary storage facilities for spent nuclear fuels in domestic nuclear power plants are expected to be saturated, external intermediate storage facilities would be required in the future. Spent nuclear fuels are stored in metal canisters and then placed in a dry environment within concrete or metal casing for operation. In the United States, the dry storage method for spent nuclear fuels has been operated for an extended period. Based on the corrosion experiences of dry storage canisters in chloride environments, numerous studies have been conducted to reduce corrosion in welds. With the construction of intermediate storage facilities in Korea for spent nuclear fuels expected near coastal areas adjacent to nuclear power plants, there is a need for research on the corrosion occurrence of welds and mitigation methods for canisters in chloride environments. In this paper, we measured and compared the residual stresses in the Heat-Affected Zones (HAZ) after electron beam welding (EBW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) processes for candidate materials such as 304L, 316L, and duplex stainless steel(DSS). We investigated the possibility of microstructure control through the application of surface modification processes using friction stir processing (FSP). Corrosion tests on each welded specimen revealed a higher corrosion rate in EBW welds compared to GTAW. Furthermore, it was confirmed that corrosion resistance improved due to phase refinement and redistribution of precipitates when FSP was applied.

  • Ferritic stainless steels are widely used in the construction industry and in exhaust manifolds due to their low cost and relatively superior stress corrosion cracking resistance and pitting corrosion resistance compared to austenite stainless steels. Ferritic stainless steels are currently welded by various welding process including gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), electron resistance welding (ERW) and laser beam welding. However, when these stainless steels are welded by fusion welding, some problems occur in the fusion zone (FZ) and heat affected zone (HAZ). First, the ductility of the weld is reduced due to the grain growth in the FZ and HAZ. Second, as its HAZ is frequently sensitized during welding, corrosion resistance deteriorates in this region due to the Cr depletion zone. To prevent these problems, it is recommended that ferritic stainless steels be welded with a low heat input. In this study, recent researches in the view of friction stir welded ferritic stainless steels are briefly reviewed.

On-line Monitoring Using SVD in a Electron Beam Welding (전자빔 용접에서 SVD을 이용한 온라인 모니터링)

  • Time series analysis results show the SVD is a candidate of on-line monitoring of welding penetration when the covariance matrix of a full penetration is used as a mapping function. As the reconstructed embedding vectors from the chaotic scalar time series are manipulated by the covariance matrix, the mapped tim series lie on a hyper-ellipsoid which the lengths of semi-axes are the squared eigenvalues of the covariance matrix in the case of full penetration. These visualize by two dimensional stroboscope views. The other cases like partial penetration, are different in the sense of sizes and shapes. Here we test two types of time series; the ion current and the X-ray. The ion current is better than the X-ray as an on-line monitoring signal, because the difference of the eigenvalue spectrum of the ion(between the pull penetration and partial penetration) is bigger than those of the X-ray.

  • The effect of applied stress, current density and heat-treatment after welding on the time to fracture, fracture behavior was investigated by the method of constant load tensile testing under catholic charging with hydrogen in E.B. welded 250,300 Grade 18% Ni Maraging steel sheet. The main results obtained are as follows: 1. All specimen showed the characteristic delayed failure and the time to fracture showed decreasing tendency with the increase in current density and applied stress. 2. Hydrogen embitterment susceptibility of notched specimen after solution-treatment and aging after welding was more increased than that of aged smooth specimen and as welded specimen. 3. Fracture surface showed a typical intergranular fracture on the border, a dimple pattern in the center of specimen and some quasi-cleavage fracture between the intergranular and the dimple.

  • Metal AM(Additive Manufacturing) has been steadily developed and that is classified into two method. PBF(Powder Bed Fusion) deposited in the bed by the laser or electron beam as a heat source of the powder material and DED(Directed Energy Deposition) deposited by varied heat source of powder and solid filler material. In the developed countries has been applying high productivity process of solid filler metal based DED method to the aerospace and defense sectors. The price of the powder material is quite expensive compared to the solid filler metal. A study on DED method that is based on a solid filler metal is increasing significantly although was low accuracy and degree of freedom.

  • A silicon lens and an insulator of pyrex, components of a micro-electron column, should be assembled by aligning and stacking simultaneously. An optical alignment of a diffraction beam and a laser welding were employed for the assembly of a source lens and an Einzel lens with precision within $\pm$4% for the maximum aperture size. The experimental condition for optical alignment and laser welding are explained. Anodic bonding was used to assist in stacking lenses. A micro-electron column of smaller apertures assembled with precise alignment and fabrication was tested with a current image of a Cu grid of 9$\mu$m in linewidth, and showed a higher resolution in acceleration mode.

Electron beam weldability of Niobium (니오븀의 전자빔 용접성)

  • Electron beam (EB) weldability of pure grade Nb sheet was studied. One of Nb sheets was as-annealed and the other was cold rolled. Microstructures, Vickers hardness, and transverse weld tensile test were carried out for the base metal, the heat affected zone (HAZ) and weld metal. In the case of the EB welds made using the annealed Nb sheeet, fine equiaxed grains and coarse grains were dominant at the base metal and the HAZ, respectively, and columnar grains were observed at the weld metal. For the EB welds made using the cold rolled Nb sheet, elongated grains in the rolling direction at the base metal, and the microstructures of the weld metal and the HAZ are similar to those of the EB welds made using the annealed Nb sheet, respectively. For both annealed and cold rolled Nb sheet, the width of the HAZs are unusually wide in spite of using high density heat source, i.e. electron beam, and the grain sizes of both HAZs are similar. When tensile test was carried out using the transverse weld specimens, the failure occurred at the HAZ for both EB welds made using Nb sheets annealed and cold rolled, respectively and the tensile strengths of both specimens were 161MPa. Vickers hardness of EB welds made using annealed Nb was 56-57 Hv at both base metal and weld metal, 52-53 Hv at the HAZ. On the other hand, Vickers hardness of EB welds made using cold rolled Nb was 97-99 Hv at the base metal, but the hardness values of weld metal were similar to those obtained at the weld metal of annealed Nb.

  • 최근 국내외에서 자동차 연비와 성능 향상을 위하여 고부가가치 자동변속기의 개발이 적극적으로 추진되고 있다. 특히, 유럽(ZF)과 일본(JATCO, AISIN)을 비롯한 변속기 부품의 기술선진국에서는 전자빔 용접을 적용한 고부가가치 자동변속기 제품이 개발되어 다양한 고급차 모델에 적용되고 있으며 2010년까지 8속 자동변속기를 출시할 예정으로 개발을 추진하고 있다. 이러한 자동변속기를 개발하기 위하여 부품의 성형 및 가공정밀도 관리가 중요하며, 최종 조립되는 부품의 전처리(연질화처리, 탈지, 이물질 제거등)와 용접시 용접변형을 최소화하기 위한 공정조건의 엄격한 관리가 요구되고 있다. 변속기 부품으로 사용되는 소재는 성형성 확보를 위한 연질재(SPCC)와 강도를 확보하기 위한 고강도강(SAPH400, SPFH590)으로 서로 다른 두께의 재질이 조립되어 최종단계에서 용접공정에 의해 제작되고 있다. 특히, 연질재는 복잡한 형상으로 성형한 다음, 가공을 거쳐 경화를 위한 연질화처리가 요구되기 때문에 건전한 용접을 하기 위해서는 용접면에 접한 연질화 처리부는 연질화 처리재가 잔존하지 않도록 완전한 제거할 필요가 있다. 만약 전처리 공정에서 충분한 세척과 가공품의 정도관리가 확보되지 않으면 전자빔 용접시 고온에서 이물질 증발과 잔류, 스패터 발생등에 의한 용접부 결함발생이나 용접변형으로 인하여 제품불량이 발생하게 된다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 최종 조립공정인 용접작업시 발생되는 결함을 방지하고 이 두께 및 이종소재의 전자빔 용접비드 형상(비드 폭, 용입깊이)을 최적화 함으로서 용접부 변형을 최소화하고 충분한 강도를 확보하고자 전자빔 용접전류와 속도에 따른 비드형상을 비교검토 하고자 하였다. 그리고 실차적용시 신뢰성을 확보하기 위하여 전자빔 용접한 자동차 변속기 부품의 비틀림 시험을 실시하였으며 전자빔 용접 전, 후의 변형량을 측정하여 변속기 부품으로서의 적용성을 검증하고자 하였다.

Pulsed laser welding of Zr-1%Nb alloy

  • Laser welding is usually a more effective method than electron-beam one since a vacuum chamber is not required. It is important for joining Zr-1%Nb (E110) alloy in a manufacturing process of nuclear fuel rods. In the present work, effect of energy parameters of pulsed laser welding on properties of butt joints of sheets with a thickness of 0.5 mm is investigated. The most efficient combination has been found (8-11 J pulse energy, 10-14 ms pulse duration, 780-810 W peak pulse power, 3 Hz pulse frequency, 1.12 mm/s welding speed). The results show that ultimate strength under static loading can not be used as a quality criterion for zirconium alloys welds. Increased shielding gas flow rate does not allow to protect weld metal totally and contributes to defect formation without using special nozzles. Several types of imperfections of the welds have been found, but the major problem is branching microcracks on the surface of the welds. It is difficult to identify the cause of their appearance without additional research on improving the welding zone protection (gas composition and flow rate as well as nozzle configuration) and studying the hydrogen content in the welds.

Comparison on Autogenous Weldability of Stainless Steel using High Energy Heat Source (고에너지 열원에 따른 스테인리스강의 제살용접특성 비교)

  • Today the welding for LNG carrier is known to be possible using arc and plasma arc welding process. But because of the lower energy density, arc welding is inevitable to multi-pass welding for thick plate and has a limit of welding speed compared to laser which is high energy density heat source. When thick plate is welded, weld defect by multi-pass welding and heat-affected zone by high heat-input were formed. Therefore one-pass welding by key-hole has been considered to work out the problems. It is possible for Laser, electron beam, plasma process to do key-hole welding. Nowadays, plasma process has been used for welding membrane of cargo tank for LNG carrier instead of arc process. Recently, many studies have examined to apply laser process to welding of membrane. In this paper, weldability, microstructure and mechanical properties of stainless steel for LNG carrier welded by fiber laser were compared to those by plasma. As a result, although the laser welding has several times faster speed, similar properties and smaller weld and heat affected zone were obtained. Consequently, this study proves the superiority of fiber laser welding for LNG carrier.
