Effects of Storage Temperature on the Quality of Mini Paprika, (Capsicum annuum L. 'Hivita Yellow' & 'Hivita Red') Fruits (저장온도가 소과종 파프리카(Capsicum annuum. L, 'Hivita Yellow' & 'Hivita Red')의 과실품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Quality deterioration during storage such as weight and fruit firmness loss after harvest is one of the main problems in summer cultivation of mini paprika. Objective of this study was to determine appropriate storage temperature and duration in the mini paprika('Hivita Yellow' and 'Hivita Red'). More fruit firmness loss during storage was observed at higher storage temperature. Fruit firmness of 'Hivita Yellow' at $20^{\circ}C$ was $99.6g/cm^2$ after a 5-day storage whereas that decreased by $73.0g/cm^2$ after a 40-day storage. Storing 'Hivita Yellow' at $8^{\circ}C$ showed the lowest fruit firmness loss with 109.7 and $92.7g/cm^2$ after a 5-day and a 40-day storage, respectively. In both cultivars, soluble solids content of fruits was higher at $20^{\circ}C$ than at 4, 8 and $12^{\circ}C$. Higher temperature triggered more water loss of the fruits with more occurrence of soft rot and shriveling symptoms. The changes in electrolyte conductivity of fruits during storage was higher in the fruits at lower temperature. Fruit stored at $20^{\circ}C$ showed the highest respiration(more $CO_2$ and less $O_2$) during storage than fruits at the other storage temperatures.

Storage potential of low temperature adapted shiitake mushroom under freezing temperature (저온성 표고버섯의 빙점하 저장 잠재력)

  • This study was aimed to find the storage potential of low temperature adapted shiitake mushroom under freezing temperature ($-3^{\circ}C$). Fresh shiitake mushroom was harvested at late Feb. and cooled to target temperature, $-3^{\circ}C$ in the cooling room for 24 hr. Cooled mushroom were then placed in plastic boxes, wrapped with plastic film ($30{\mu}m$), and stored at $-3^{\circ}C$ for 2 months. Weight loss of mushroom was ranged from 2.1 to 3.2%. Dry weight per unit fresh weight, however, was slightly increased because of moisture loss. Firmness of fruit body increased from $0.95kg/cm^{-2}$ (before storage) to $1.13kg/cm^{-2}$ (after 2 month storage). About half amount of starch was lost during 2 month storage. The amount of total and reducing sugars remained relatively constant. After storage, freshness of mushroom was recovered by thawing treatment. When recovered mushroom were packaged with styrofoam tray and PVC wrapping, and exposed to ambient and $10^{\circ}C$, respectively, brown spot on the gill of fruit body was found and slight decay symptom was also found at ambient temperature only but not at $10^{\circ}C$. Results indicated that low temperature adapted shiitake mushroom has a storage potential under freezing temperature ($-3^{\circ}C$). Freezing storage technology of fresh shiitake mushroom will contribute the increase of storability up to 2 months.

Hypoadrenocorticism in a 1-Year-Old Korean Shorthair Cat

  • A one-year-old spayed female Korean Shorthair cat presented to Kangwon National University Veterinary Hospital with vomiting, weight loss, lethargy, loss of appetite, and polyuria that lasted for more than two weeks. The body condition score, blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature were abnormally low, and the physical examination findings were consistent with moderate dehydration. Hematological and biochemical tests demonstrated mild azotemia and a low Na:K ratio. Additional abdominal ultrasound imaging revealed reduced size of both adrenal glands. The adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test showed decreased post-ACTH cortisol and aldosterone levels and increased endogenous ACTH levels, confirming a diagnosis of primary hypoadrenocorticism. The cat was treated with subcutaneous injections of desoxycorticosterone pivalate (DOCP) and oral prednisolone supplementation, and subsequent electrolyte analysis showed a normal Na:K ratio. Clinical symptoms were also improved in response to treatment. Hypoadrenocorticism in cats is a very rare disease, but it should not be excluded as a potential diagnosis in favor of kidney diseases or other conditions, especially when the Na:K ratio is low. In addition, the prognosis for the disease and the response to DOCP treatment should be further evaluated in cats.

Study on Photocatalytic Cr(VI) Reduction with Metal Deposited Anodized $TiO_2$ Tube (금속담지된 $TiO_2$ 나노튜브를 활용한 Cr(VI)환원의 광화학적 효율 연구)

  • The present work is performed to photocatalytically reduce Cr(VI) by means of metal deposited anodized $TiO_2$ tubes, which are prepared by anodization of Ti foil followed by metal deposition. Stably immobilized photo-reactive materials are favored in the field of detoxification in a conventional aqueous medium, preventing gradual loss of efficiency and process malfunction due to detachment of the materials. The prepared samples are characterized by SEM, TEM, EDAX, and photocurrent. The metal deposited-$TiO_2$ electrode shows higher efficiency for Cr(VI) reduction (ca. 20%) and higher ability for adsorption (4~5 times) than pure one.

  • A hydrogen cooling method is used in a power generator for removing the unnecessary heat due to the windage loss of a rotor and the joule heat of a stator. A MEA (Membrane Electrolyte Assembly) hydrogen generator has been developed and applied as a hydrogen supplying system for the cooling of a 350MW power generator. As a field application result, the average potential of eleven cells and the voltage efficiency were measured 2.26V/cell and 65.4% (Higher Heating Value) respectively at the hydrogen pressure of 6 Bar, the hydrogen flow rate of 9.1L/min, and the current of 150A.

  • 산소이온 전도체로 잘 알려진 Yttira-Stabilizd Ziroconia(TSZ)는 연료전지, oxygen pumps, chemical gas sensor 등 다양한 electrochemical divices에 이용되는 고체 전해질의 하나이다. 특히 YSZ는 oxygen 및 oxygen과 평형상태에 있는 gas들을 검출하는 sensor의 electrolyte로서 가장 많이 쓰이고 있다. 현재 상용화되어 있는 YSZ Sensor는 전통적인 bulk 형태의 ceramic으로 제작된 것으로 충분한 ionic conductivity를 얻기 위해서는 $600^{\circ}C$이상의 operating temperature를 필요로 하나 YSZ를 박막으로 제조시 낮은 operating temperature를 뿐만 아니라 sensor의 소형화, 낮은 ohmic loss 및 다양한 응용이 가능한 장점을 가질 수 있다. 본 실험에서는 산소 이온 전도체로서 8mol%-YSZ 고체전해질을 RF-magnetron bias sputtering 법을 이용하여 증착하였다. 제조된 YSZ 박막을 이용한 산소감응 센서셀 구조는 SiO2/Ni-NiO/Pt/YSZ/Pt-기판이다. 센서셀의 정상상태에서의 기전력(electromotive force ; EMF)을 산소분압(Po:1.013$\times$103Ta ~1.013$\times$105Pa)과 측정온도(30$0^{\circ}C$~$700^{\circ}C$)를 변화시키며 측정하였다. 이론적인 기전력과 측정값 사이의 편차는 Po:1.565$\times$104Pa 이하의 산소분압에서는 컸지만 이 이상의 분압에서는 이론치에 근접한 값을 가졌다. 증착한 YSZ와 Ni-NiO 박막의 구조는 X-ray diffractometer(XRD)를 이용하여 결정구조를 알아 보았고, TSZ 박막의 표면 morphology 관찰은 Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) 이용하였다. 박막의 조성분석은 X-ray energy dispersive analysis(EDX)을 사용하였다.

Characterization of Morphology Controlled Fluorine-doped SnO2 Thin Films

  • Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO), which is commonly used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), is a promising material of transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) because of advantages such as high chemical stability, high resistance, high optical transparency (>80% at 550nm), and low electrical resistivity (${\sim}10-4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$). Especially, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been actively studied since Gratzel's research group required FTO substrate as a charge collector. When FTO substrates are used in DSSCs, photo-injected electrons may experience recombination at interface between dye-bonded semiconductor oxides ($TiO_2$) on FTO substrate and the electrolyte. To solve these problems, one is that because recombination at FTO substrate cannot be neglected, thin $TiO_2$ layer on FTO substrate as a blocking layer was introduced. The other is to control the morphology of surface on FTO substrate to reduce a loss of electrons. The structural, electrical, and optical characteristics of morphology controlled-FTO thin films as TCO materials were analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Hall Effect Measurement, and UV spectrophotometer. The performance of DSSCs fabricated with morphology controlled FTO substrates was performed using Power Conversion Efficiency (PCE). We will discuss these results in detail in Conference.

Effect of Iron Co-deposited Nickel on the Microstructures and Properties of Electroplated Nanocrystalline Nickel-iron Alloys (전착된 나노 결정질 니켈-철 합금의 미세구조 및 물성에 대한 철의 영향)

  • Nickel-iron nanocrystalline alloys with different compositions and grain sizes were fabricated by electro-plating for MEMS devices. The iron content of the deposits was changed by varying the nickel/iron ion ratio in the electrolyte. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was applied for measuring the strength of the texture and grain size of the deposits. The nickel/iron atom ratio of the deposits was analyzed by EDS. The hardness of the alloys was evaluated by Vickers hardness indenter. The internal stress of the deposits was measured by Thin Film Stress Measurement using Stoney's formula. Surface morphology and roughness were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The results of this study revealed that at a grain size of approximately $17\~24$nm the hardness, internal stress and roughness depend strongly on the iron content. With increasing the iron content, the hardness and internal stress of the deposits increased. An excellent correlation between the increase in the internal stress and the loss of (200) texture was found.

The Effect of Total Parenteral Nutrition on Hospitalized Patients according to Nutritional Status (입원 환자의 영양상태에 따른 TPN(Total Parenteral Nutrition) 공급 현황 및 TPN 공급 효과 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the anthropometry, biochemical parameters and electrolytes concentrations of the Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) patients according to their nutritional status at the time of admission. Thirty-three patients in the Intensive Care Unit at S University Hospital were the subjects of this study. Their nutritional status was classified as At-risk I (Mild PCM, n = 13), At - risk II (Moderate PCM, n = 9) and At-risk III (Marasmus + kwashiorkor + severe PCM, n = 11) . Anthropometeric, biochemical and dietary assessments were performed. The Patients intake of calories (75.02%) and protein (53.15%) was insufficient compare with Korean RDA requirements. The body weight and the Body Mass Index (BMI) in the At-risk III group were significantly lower than in the other groups. The percentage of body weight loss and change of body weight (kg) were significantly higher than in the other groups. The subjects were malnourished as indicated by nutritional related parameters such as serum total protein, albumin, total lymphocyte count (TLC), hemoglobin and hematocrit. Serum total protein, albumin and TLC levels were lower at the time of admission before TPN administration. But after TPN administration, they increased. The electrolyte concentrations did not show any differences following TPN administration. The nutritional status of the patients could be affect by the duration of TPN administration and the number of days of the patients hospitalization. The patients who require nutritional support need the continuous follow-up care and monitoring by a nutritional support team. (Korean J Community Nutrition 8(4) : 574-583, 2003)

  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis(DKA), one of acute complications of diabetes mellitus(DM) occurs mostly in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients. Its clinical symptoms are hyperglycemia, ketonemia or ketonuria, metabolic acidosis, etc. The interaction of lack of insulin, excessive secretion of insulin antagonic hormone and dehydration cause body fluid loss and electrolyte, typical symptom of DKA as polyuria, polydipsia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain occur. As a result, prompt supply of fluid and insulin by intravenous injection should be conducted for treatment. It is still an emergent disorder whose mortality is still 10 to 15%, though is has decreased compared to the past. We treated a female patient who has DKA, had withdrawn insulin pump therapy. We report a case of DKA with a brief review of related literatures.
