Effects of lactate concentration, temperature, counter ions, pH as well as voltage (current) in batch electrodialysis (ED) experiments with a 3-compartment unit were investigated. The applied voltage was found to be the most critical factor as expected. The electrodialysis rate increased with the lactate concentration of the source solution. The amount of lactate transferred was limited by the lactate concentration difference between cathode and permeate compartments. The electrodialysis rate did not heavily depend on temperature change. The electrodialysis rate of NH$_{4}$-lactate was faster than that of Na-lactate and both lactates showed the highest electrodialysis rate at a pH of 4.0. A little amount of non-ionic glucose diffused through the anionic membrane to the permeate compartment. To test the effectiveness of the in situ recovery of lactic acid from fermentation broth by ED, three cases of batch culture were carried out; pH control only, ED only, and pH control and ED. The case with both pH control and ED was more efficient than that with pH control only in the aspects of productivity and product yield.

Electrodialysis has been applied for treatment of industrial wastewater including metal electroplating. The wastewater from metal plating industries contains high concentrations of inorganics such as copper, nickel, and sodium. The ions in the feed were separated due to the electrical forces in the electrodialysis. The concentrate compartment is exposed to the elevated concentrations of the ions and yielded inorganic precipitations on the cation exchange membranes. The presence of organic matter in the metal plating wastewater affects complex interfacial reactions, which determines characteristics of inorganic scale fouling. The wastewater from a metal plating industry in practice was collected and the inorganic and organic compositions of the wastewater were analyzed. The performance of electrodialysis of the raw wastewater was evaluated and the effects of adjusting pH of the raw water were also measured. The integrated processes with neutralization and electrodialysis showed great removal of heavy metals sufficient to discharge to aquatic ecosystem. The organic matter in the raw water was also reduced by the neutralization, which might enhance removal performance and alleviate organic fouling in the integrated system.
Papermaking tobacco sheet is an important reclaimed process for cigarette making. Traditionally, the pressure driven membrane was often used to isolate the effective compounds from the tobacco sheet extract. However, this method is difficult to remove small ionic compounds. Besides, membrane fouling is a major problem for effective use of these pressure driven membrane technologies. In this study, the electrodialysis process is used to removal the chloride ions and nitrate ions, thus the smoking quality of papermaking tobacco sheet extract can get improved. Three types of electrolytes ($Na_2SO_4$, NaCl and HCl) are chosen to prevent the generation of precipitation. The results indicate that 0.1mol/L HCl at current density of $30mA/cm^2$ is the optimal condition for the electrodialysis process. The removal rates of the Cland $NO{_3}^-$ in tobacco sheet extract are 97% and 98.4%, respectively. The electrodialysis process cost was estimated to be 0.11$/L. Naturally, electrodialysis is not only technological feasible, environmental-friendly and economical-attractive for tobacco extract treatment.
In this study, desalination by electrodialysis with ion exchange membranes was applied to synthetic waters with various ion concentrations and also for ground waters from coastal areas in Korea. Electrodialysis performance on the synthetic solutions showed the similar tendency in operation time and current curves, i.e., shorter operation time and higher maximum current with increasing applied voltages. The ED results of synthetic waters with different ion compositions, i.e., $Na_2SO_4$, $MgSO_4$, $CaSO_4$, at the similar conductivity condition, i.e., $1,250{\mu}s/cm$ revealed that effects of mono- and divalent ions on water quality and performance in electrodialysis were different. The divalent ions had less efficiency in the ED compared to monovalent sodium ions and also divalent calcium ions showed better performance than Mg ions. The electrodialysis on the ground waters produced high quality of drinking water. The groundwater from SungRoe however showed a buildup of membrane resistance. Organic matter concentrations and great portions of divalent ions in the groundwater were possible causes of the deteriorated performance.
In this study, the removal of MB from saline solutions was evaluated by two methods by adsorption and electrodialysis; the adsorption of the mixture dye/salt on dried orange peel waste (OPW) was studied in batch method. In this study the biosorption of cationic dye by OPW was investigated as a function of initial solution pH, and initial salt (sodium chloride) concentration. The maximal dye uptake at $pH{\geq}3.6$ in the absence and in the presence of salt and the dye uptake diminished considerably in the presence of increasing concentrations of salt up to 8 g/L. The Redlich Peterson and Langmuir were the most suitable adsorption models for describing the biosorption equilibrium data of the dye both individually and in salt containing medium. As well, this work deals with the electrodialysis application to remove the dye. Synthetic solutions were used for the investigation of the main operational factors affecting the treatment performance; such as applied voltage, pH, initial dye concentration and ionic strength. The experimental results for adsorption and electrodialysis confirmed the importance of electrostatic interactions on the dye. The electrodialysis process with standard ion exchange membranes enabled efficient desalination of cationic dye solutions; there are two main factors in fouling: electrostatic interaction between cations of dyes and the fixed charged groups of the CEM, and affinity interactions.
Electrodialysis (ED) is known to be a useful membrane process for desalination, concentration, separation, and purification in many fields. In this process, it is desirable to work at high current density in order to achieve fast desalination with the lowest possible effective membrane area. In practice, however, operating currents are restricted by the occurrence of concentration polarization phenomena. Many studies showed the occurrence of a limiting current density (LCD). The limiting current density in the electrodialysis process is an important parameter which determines the electrical resistance and the current utilization. Therefore, its reliable determination is required for designing an efficient electrodialysis plant. The purpose of this study is the development of a predictive model of the limiting current density in an electrodialysis process using response surface methodology (RSM). A two-factor central composite design (CCD) of RSM was used to analyze the effect of operation conditions (the initial salt concentration (C) and the linear flow velocity of solution to be treated (u)) on the limiting current density and to establish a regression model. All experiments were carried out on synthetic brackish water solutions using a laboratory scale electrodialysis cell. The limiting current density for each experiment was determined using the Cowan-Brown method. A suitable regression model for predicting LCD within the ranges of variables used was developed based on experimental results. The proposed mathematical quadratic model was simple. Its quality was evaluated by regression analysis and by the Analysis Of Variance, popularly known as the ANOVA.

Electrodialysis (ED) is used in wastewater treatment, during the processing and recovery of beneficial materials, to produce usable water. In this study, sulfate and chlorine ions, which are the anions majorly used for electroplating, were studied as factors affecting the recovery of copper, nickel and water from wastewater by electrodialysis. Although the removal rates of copper and nickel ions were slightly higher with the use of chlorine ions than of sulfate ions, the removal efficiencies were above 99.9% under all experimental conditions. The metal ions of the plating wastewater flowed through the ion exchange membrane of the diluate tank and the concentrate tank while all the water moved together due to electro-osmosis. The migration of water from the diluate tank to the concentrate tank was higher in the presence of a monovalent chloride ion compared to that of a divalent sulfate ion. When sulfate was the anion used, the recoveries of copper and nickel increased by about 25% and 30%, respectively, as compared to the chloride ion. Therefore, when divalent ions such as sulfate are present in the electrodialysis, it is possible to reduce the movement amount of water and highly concentrate the copper and nickel in the plating wastewater.
A two-stage process of nanofiltration and water-splitting electrodialysis was investigated for lactic acid recovery from fermentation broth. In this process, sodium lactate is isolated from fermentation broth in the first stage of nanofiltration by using an NTR-729HF membrane, and then is converted to lactic acid in the second stage by water-splitting electrodialysis. To determine the optimal operating conditions for nanofiltration, the effects of pressure, lactate concentration, pH, and known added impurities were studied. Lactate rejection was less than 5%, magnesium rejection approximated 45%, and calcium rejection was at 40%. In subsequent water-splitting electrodialysis, both the sodium lactate conversion to lactic acid and sodium hydroxide recovery, were about 95%, with a power requirement of $0.9{\sim}1.0\; kWh$ per kg of lactate.

Ultra-pure water (UPW), a highly treated water free of colloidal material and of a conductivity less than 0.06 ${\mu}S$, is an essential component required by modern industry. One of the methods for UPW production is the electrodialysis-ion exchange (ED/IE) system, in which the electrodialysis (ED) process is used as a preliminary demineralization step. The IE step can be replaced with electrodeionization (EDI) to decrease the volume of post-regeneration lyes. In this paper, the electrodialysis process carried out to relatively low diluate conductivity was investigated and the costs of UPW production were calculated. The optimal value of desalination degree by ED in the ED/IE and ED/EDI systems was estimated. UPW unit costs for integrated ED/IE and ED/EDI systems were compared to simple ion exchange and other methods for UPW production (RO-IE, RO-EDI). The minimal UPW unit costs in ED/EDI integrated system were estimated as $0.37/$m^3$ for feed TDS 600 mg/L and $0.36/$m^3$ for feed TDS 400 mg/L at 64 $m^3/h$ capacity, which was lower than in the comparable ED/IE integrated system ($0.42-0.44/$m^3$). The presented results suggest that an ED/EDI integrated system may be economically viable.
fouling phenomena of ion exchange membranes were reviewed for improved design and operation of electodialysis. The membrane fouling index for electrodialysis (EDMFI) was defined for the quantitative analysis of fouling potential as an analogy to the pressure-driven membrane process. fouling phenomena were compared in the electrodialysis experiments with inorganic foulant (silica sol) and organic foulants (humate and bovine serum albumin (BSA)), and their fouling potentials were analyzed using the fouling index. The comparison showed that the EDMFI could be used as a quantitative measure of the fouling tendency in electrodialysis processes. As a novel fouling mitigation method, square wave power was reported to be effective in electrodialysis with organic foulants. The square wave powers having the pulsed electric field enabled to reduce the membrane fouling significantly at an optimal frequency.
