  • We investigated under-gate type carbon nanotube field emitter arrays (FEAs) for back light unit (BLU) in liquid crystal display (LCD). Gate oxide was formed by wet etching of ITO coated glass substrate instead of depositing $SiO_2$ on the glass substrate. Wet etching is easer and simpler than depositing and etching of thick gate oxide to isolate the gate metal from cathode electrode in triode. Field emission characteristic s of triode structure were measured. The maximum current density of 92.5 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ was when the gate and anode voltage was 95 and 2500 V, respectively at the anode-cathode spacing of 1500 ${\mu}m$.

  • In this paper, we present an arrayed flexible tactile sensor, which can detect contact normal forces as well as positions. The tactile sensor is developed using Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) that is known as piezoelectric polymer, and the surface electrode is fabricated using silk-screening technique with silver. We develop a charge amplifier in order to amplify the small signal from the sensor, and a fast signal processing unit by using a DSP chip. The developed tactile sensor is physically flexible and it can be deformed three-dimensionally to any shape so that it can be placed on anywhere on the curved surface. In the future, the developed sensor is applied to a dexterous robotic hand...$\textbullet$ Tactile sensing, PVDF, Robot hand

  • Meta1-ferroelectric-insulator-semiconductor(MFIS) devices using Pt/LiNbO$_{3}$/AIN/Si structure were successfully fabricated. AIN thin films were made into metal-insulator-semiconductor(MIS) devices by evaporating aluminum in a dot array on the film surface. The dielectric constant of the AIN film calculated from the capacitance in the accumulation region in the capacitance-voltage(C-V ) characteristic is 8. The gate leakage current density of MIS devices using a aluminum electrode showed the least value of 1$\times$10$^{-8A}$ $\textrm{cm}^2$ order at the electric field of 500㎸/cm. A typica] value of the dielectric constant of MFIS device was about 23 derived from 1MHz capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurement and the resistivity of the film at the field of 500㎸/cm was about 5.6$\times$ 10$^{13}$ $\Omega$.cmcm

  • We demonstrate that carbon electrodes screen-printed directly on cellulose paper can be employed to perform bipolar electrochemistry. In addition, an array of 18 screen-printed bipolar electrodes (BPEs) can be simultaneously controlled using a single pair of driving electrodes. The electrochemical state of the BPEs is read-out using electrogenerated chemiluminescence. These results are important because they demonstrate the feasibility of coupling bipolar electrochemistry to microfluidic paperbased analytical devices (${\mu}PADs$) to perform highly multiplexed, low-cost measurements.

  • A 100*100.mu.m$^{2}$ aluminum micro mirror is designed and fabricated using a thick photoresist as a sacrificial layer andas a mold for nickel electroplating. The micro mirror is composed of aluminum mirror plate, two nickel support posts, two aluminum hinges, two address eletrodes, and two landing electrodes. The aluminum mirror plate, which is supported by two nickel support posts, is overhung about 10.mu.m from the silicon substrate. THe aluminum mirror plate is actuated like a seesaw by electrostatic force generated by electic potential difference applied between the mirror plate and the address electrode. This paper presents some methods to measure the optical and the dynamic characteristics of the fabricated micro mirror.

  • A semiconductor microelectrode array has been successfully used in obtaining single unit recordings from medial giant nerve of clay fish, rat saphenous nerve and abdominal ganglia of aplysia. The recording device fabricated using silicon microfabrication techniques is a depth-probe type and, previously, has been mostly used to record from central nerve system of vertebrates. From invertebrates, and also from peripheral nerves of vertebrates, however, the quality of the recorded signal depends heavily on the recording conditions, such as the proximity of the electrode site to the nerve cells and the size of the neuron. We have modeled the signal to noise ratio as unctions of these parameters and compared the experimental data with the calculated values thus obtained.

  • In this work, a dielectrophoresis-based particle-separation device is developed which is to be used to continuously separate particles in microchannels. We fabricated the particle-separation device with combining the benefits of electrode-based DEP and insulator-based DEP. The DEP forces are generated by an array of electrodes located in both sidewalls of a main channel. According to the magnitude and frequency of electrical signals, particles with different dielectric properties experience different DEP forces, and therefore, continuously move along different streamlines in the main flow channel without need of pre-focusing process. Based on this mechanism, we examined the performance of the device by controlling the trajectory of polystyrene particles. This device is applicable to the investigation of dielectric properties of biological cells as well as the continuous separation of biological cells.

  • In this study, a DNA chip with a microelectrode array was fabricated using microfabrication technology. Several probe DNAs consisting of mercaptohexyl moiety at their 5 end were immobilized on the gold electrodes by DNA arrayer. Then target DNAs were hybridized and reacted with Hoechst 33258, which is a DNA minor groove binder and electrochemically active dye. Linear sweep voltammetry or cyclic voltammetry showed a difference between target DNA and control DNA in the anodic peak current values. It was derived from Hoechst 33258 concentrated at the electrode surface through association with formed hybrid. It suggested that this DNA chip could recognize the sequence specific genes.

  • A portable electronic tongue (E-Tongue) system using an array of ion-selective electrode (ISE) and personal digital assistants (PDA) for recognizing and analyzing food and drink have been designed. By the employment of PDA, the complex algorithm such as fuzzy c-means algorithm (FCMA) could be used in E-Tongue, PUMA could iteratively solve the cluster centers of pre-determined standard patterns. And the membership between the standard patterns and unknown pattern could be analyzed easily by the present E-Tongue combined with PDA.

  • In the present paper, we will focus on the characterization of the biological network behaviour, in terms of synchronization and desynchronization of the measured signals by Micro Electrode array. We evaluate a easy calculable estimator that implies de/synchronization property of the biological neural network.
