For monitoring of railway structures, optical fiber sensors are very convenient. The fiber sensors are very small and do not disturb the structural properties. They also have several merits such as electro-magnetic immunity, long signal transmission, good accuracy and multiplicity of one sensor line. Strain measurement technologies with fiber optic sensors have been investigated as a part of smart structure. In this paper, we investigated the possibilities of fiber optic sensor application to the monitoring of railway structures. We expect that the fiber optic sensors have much less noises than electrical strain gauges because of electro-magnetic immunity while railways operate electric power of 22000 volts. Fiber optic sensors showed good durability and long term stability for continuous monitoring of the railway structures as well as good response to the structural behaviors during construction.

In this paper, an novel optical measuring system based on the electro-optic effect has been proposed and realized using Pockels cell with a view to detecting partial discharge taking place at the needle plane electrode. This system has the following advantages ; nonmetallic probe sensor, immune to external EMI noise and broad band response of the Pockels cell from DC to GHz. This system is constructed by He-Ne laser, Mach-Zehnder interferometer with Pockels sensor, balanced photo receiver, data acquisition board and PC. The response characteristics of the developed proto type sensor are examined for AC and corona discharge.

The temporal super resolution is a method for increasing the frame rate. Electro-optical sensors are used in various surveillance and reconnaissance weapons systems, and the spatial resolution and temporal resolution of the required electro-optical sensors vary according to the performance requirement of each weapon system. Because most image sensors capture images at 30~60 frames/second, it is necessary to increase the frame rate when the target moves and changes rapidly. This paper proposes a method to increase the frame rate using color channel extrapolation. Using a DMD, one frame of a general camera was adjusted to have different consecutive exposure times for each channel, and the captured image was converted to a single channel image with an increased frame rate. Using the optical flow method, a virtual channel image was generated for each channel, and a single channel image with an increased frame rate was converted to a color channel image. The performance of the proposed temporal super resolution method was confirmed by the simulation.
A novel technique has been proposed and related experimental works have been performed in order to detect the partial discharges and the location of the possible defects introduced into the Gas Insulated Switchgear. For this purpose, a prototype HY Pockels sensor has been developed and then employed in order to investigate its field applicability for finding the location of the defects using a 170kV GIS mock-up. Our proposed sensor enables us to measure the electric field variation due to the PD occurrence. In addition, the different PD patterns are observed, which might be dependant on the location and the distance of the sensor with respect to the PD source. Throughout this work, its linear response has been proved to be admissible as a function of the applied voltage. And also the position of the PD source might be distinguished by comparing the PD patterns.

Strain measurement technologies with fiber optic sensors have been investigated as a part of smart structure. We expect that the fiber optic sensors replace electrical strain gauges. The commercial electric strain gauges show good stability and dominate the strain measurement market. However, they lack durability and long term stability for continuous monitoring of the structures. In order to apply the strain gauges, we only have to attach them to the surfaces of the structures. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using fiber optic Bragg grating sensors to joint structure. The sensors show nice response to the structural behavior of the joint.

We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing interrogation method using bidirectional modulation of a Mach-Zehnder electro-optical modulator (MZ-EOM). The proposed structure consists mainly of a broadband light source (BBS), FBG, MZ-EOM, chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG), and photodetector (PD). We have obtained the transfer functions of the proposed structure and calculated the time delay from the change in the free spectral range (FSR) for ten wavelengths over the frequency range of 505 MHz to 525 MHz. The results show that the time delay and the wavelength variation have a good linear relationship with a gradient of 12.9 ps/0.2 nm, which can be usefully applied to FBG strain or temperature sensors and other multiplexed sensor applications.
Organic thin film EL devices using PPV(poly (p-phenylenevinylene)) as emitter were fabricated on various conditions and structures, their electro-optical properties were estimated. Fabricated EL devices had structures of single layer(ITO(indium tin oxide)/PPV/Mg), double layer(ITO/PVK(poly(N-vinylcarbazole))/PPV/Mg and ITO/PPV/Polymer matrix + PBD/Mg) and three layer (ITO/PVK/PPV/PS(polystyrene)+PBD(butyl-2-(4-bipheny])-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole))/Mg), their electro-optical characteristics were compared with each other. In structure of double layer (ITO/PPV /Polymer matrix + PBD/Mg), the used polymer-matrices were PMMA(poly(methyl methacrylate), PC(polycarbonate), PS and MCH(side chain liquid crystalline homopolymer). When PS as a hole transport layer was used, the luminance characteristics on concentration of PBD was obtained. In results, current-voltage-luminance curves of fabricated devices had characteristics of tunneling effect and the device showed a stable light emitting.

When the EED is exposed to the high power radiation, it is possible to verify systems survivability through measuring the induced current of EED. The usual method of performing a system level test is to replace the EED's with modified units from which the explosive charge has been removed and replaced with the fiber optic sensor. The thermal transient test was performed to obtain the temperature vs current characteristic curve for optical sensor installed in EED. The currents measured when the system is exposed to a known EME are compared to the proposed specfication about the EED and a decision is made on whether system is safe or not.
This paper is about EO sensor module control based on the image processing. The main purpose of this research is acquiring a latitude and longitude of the target located on the ground by using image processing. For image processing, OpenCV is employed which is a computer vision library originally developed by Intel, and ATmega128 is used for the EO sensor module control. This task also involves realization of control programs and acquisition of sensor view angle for the position of the target.
