Study on the Copper Electro-refining from Copper Containing Sludge (저품위 동(Cu) 함유 슬러지로부터 동 전해정련에 관한 연구)

  • The electro-refining process was performed to recovery high purity copper from low grade copper containing sludge in sulfuric acid. The surface morphologies and roughness of electro-refining copper were analyzed with variation of the type and concentration of organic additives, the best surface morphology was obtained 5 ppm of the gelatin type and 5 to 10 ppm of the thiol type organic additive. The crude metal consisted of copper with 86.635, 94.969 and 99.917 wt.%, several impurity metals of iron, nickel, cobalt and tin by pyro-metallurgical process. After electro-refining process, the purity of copper increases to 3N or 4N grade. The impurity concentrations and copper purities of copper crude metals, electrolyte and electro-refining copper were analyzed using ICP-OES, the electro-refining time and purity of copper crude metal to recover 4N grade copper were deduced.

  • The electro-refining process was performed to purify the casted tin crude metal from waste tin in methanesulfonic acid. The surface morphologies of electrodeposited tin on cathode were observed, the dendrite and delamination were inhibited by glycol group of organic additive. The impurity concentrations of tin crude metal and deposited metal were analyzed using ICP-OES. Quantitative analysis on casted tin crude metal showed that it consists of tin with 97.280 wt.% and several impurity metals of Ag, Cu, Pb, Ni, and etc. After tin electro-refining, the purity of tin increased up to 99.956 wt.%. Reduction current by cyclic voltammetry seems to be closely related to behavior of impurity in tin electro-refining.

  • In this study, using electro-refining process and methane gas reduction, we performed studying the recovery of tin with high purity from waste tin oxide had used as a electrode rod of ceramic furnace which occurred during glass production process. We recovered the crude tin of 99% purity from a methane gas reduction process and controlled a little amount of impurities. When the electrolytic refining condition was a current density of $60A/dm^2$ and the sulfuric acid concentration of 0.75 mol, 96.8% of recovered tin (99.979% of purity) were recovered during the electrolytic refining. We confirmed that toxic impurities such as Pb, Sb included in electrode rod. could be controlled.

  • This paper presents development of a user-friendly automatic control system for ESR(Electro-Slag Remelting or Refining) process. It is a second-phase refining one, commonly applied to production of high-purity specialty steel. A primarily refined castingot acts as a consumable electrode and melts by the electric resistance heat generated when high current is induced through a slag bath.   • The high pure tin production was conducted from crude-tin containing waste solder by electro-refining process. The electro-refining process maintained at 0.2V produced tin with purity of 99.98%, whereas a little increase of voltage to 0.3 V resulted tin purity of 99.92%. The high pure tin of 3N in the present process was produced by fixing the voltage at 0.3V. Considering the high pure tin production, the current density was maintained within $100-120A/m^2$ with current efficiency of 94%. Addition of sulfuric acid of 20 ~ 25 g/L to the electrolyte solution was performed in order to keep Pb (lead) concentration below 100 mg/L in the final tin product. The anode slime generated during electro refining process was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) study to understand the phases of impurities in it. It detected the presence of Cu and Ag in the slime as in the form of $Cu_6Sn_5$, $Ag_3Sn$, whereas Pb occurred as $PbSO_4$ compound.

  • In this study, copper was recovered from copper containing sludge by selectively controlling electro-refining process conditions in copper sulfate electrolyte solution. Electro-refining process was performed by LSV (Linear Sweep Voltammetry) result according to copper sulfate electrolyte solution concentration, applied current density, additive type and concentration. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) and PSA (Particle Size Analyzer) were used to analyze the shape and size of copper powder. In the 0.1 ~ 0.4 M copper sulfate electrolyte solution without organic additives, the copper powder size decreased as the applied current density became closer to the limiting current density and the copper powder size tended to decrease in 0.2 ~ 0.3 M copper sulfate electrolyte solution. In addition, when the shape and size of the copper powder were analyzed by adding various types and concentrations of organic additives to the previous experimental, fine spherical copper powder having the smallest size (nm) was obtained under the condition of cellulose type additive 2,000 ppm.

  • 폐 자원에서 회수한 주석 조금속의 주석 순도 및 불순물 순도, 전해정련 및 진공정련 후 주석 순도를 ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer)분석을 통해 확인하였다. 무기산 전해액에서 전해정련 수행결과 고순도 주석을 확보하였고, 이후 증기압, 온도 및 유지시간 별 진공정련 수행결과 초고순도 주석을 회수할 수 있는 최적화 기술을 도출하였다.

  • Recently rapid economic growth and technological development have led to an increase in the generation of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). As the amount of electric and electronic waste generated increases, the importance of processing waste printed circuit boards (PCB) is also increasing. Various studies have been conducted to recycle various valuable metals contained in a waste PCB in an environmentally friendly and economical manner. To get anode slime containing Ag and Au, Anode copper prepared from PCB scraps was used by means of electro-refining. Ag and Au recovery was conducted by leaching, direct reduction, and ion exchange method. In the case of silver, the anode slime was leached at 3 M $HNO_3$, 100 g/L, $70^{\circ}C$, and Ag was recovered by precipitation, alkali dissolution, and reduction method. In the case of gold, the nitrate leaching residues of the anode slime was leached at 25% aqua regia, 200 g/L, $70^{\circ}C$, and Au was recovered by pH adjustment, ion exchange resin adsorption, desorption and reduction method. The purity of the obtained Au and Ag were confirmed to be 99.99%.

  • Molten steel level information of ladle is very important for process control in steelmaking process. At secondary refining process, measuring lance and snokel have to keep constant thier depth from molten steel surfaces. But, there is much slag on the molten steel surface. Besides, not only the thickness of slag is varied with refining condition, but also molten steel level is largely affected by firebrick errosion. Then, optical measuring method and/or by human eyes cannot detect true molten steel surface, but slag surface. This slag thickness is 300mm at maximum, then huge diameter eddy current sensor will be needed if that type sensor is applied. In addition to, cooling system is necessary because the molten steel and slag temperature is high. This is not practically. To solve this problem, immersion type levelmeter is developed. This sensor is made up from primary and secondary cylindrical coils. High frequency current is applied to primary coil. Electro-motive force from secondary coil is measured, which is varied with molten steel level. This complete set is installed within stainless steel long capsule and attached to top of lance. This sensor is immersed into molten steel bath of ladle or tundish with protection of expendable paper sleeve.
