Cost-effective Power System with an Electronic Double Layer Capacitor for Reducing the Standby Power Consumption of Consumer Electronic Devices

  • Commercial home appliances using remotely controlled systems consume electric power while in standby mode to prepare for receiving a remote turn-on signal. The proposed power system can significantly reduce standby power consumption without increasing cost. Furthermore, since a Electronic Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) is used as an auxiliary power storage element, the life cycle is longer and system reliability can be better than with existing approaches. When the energy of the EDLC is not sufficient for turning on the appliance, the power system charges the EDLC without affecting the main system. The proposed power system is verified with a commercial LCD TV and a 3.93mW standby consumption is obtained. This standby consumption can be regarded as zero standby equipment according to the IEC-62031 standard.

  • Highly proten-conductive elastic composites have been successfully prepared from $H_3PO_4$-doped silica gel and styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block elastic copolymer. In addition solid state electric double-layer capacitors have been fabricated using the composite as an electrolyte and activated carbon powders(ACP) hybridized with the composite as a polrizable electrode. The cyclic voltammogram of the electric double-layer capacitor fabricated demonstrated that electric charge was stored in the elecric double-layer at the interface between the polarizable electrode and the electrolyte. The value of capacitance of the capacitor was 10 F/(gram of total ACP), which was comparable to that of the capacitors using conventional liquid electrolytes.

  • 슈퍼캐패시터(Super Capacitor) 또는 울트라 캐패시터(Ultra Capacitor) 등으로 불리우는 전기 이중층 캐패시터(EDLC, Electric Double Layer Capacitor)는 기존 콘덴서보다 월등한 용량 특성을 가지며, 전극과 전해질의 화학반응을 이용하던 이차전지들과 달리 주로 계면반응을 사용한 축전원리를 이용하여 높은 출력밀도와 충방전 효율, 무제한에 가까운 사이클 특성을 가지고 있다. 또한 전류변화에 안정적이어서 기존의 이차전지와는 달리 보호회로를 생략할 수 있기 때문에 단순한 회로 구성이 가능하고 전극활물질로서 탄소재를 사용하여 환경 친화적인 특성을 가진 차세대 에너지저장장치라고 할 수 있다. 특히 50만 사이클이라는 우수한 수명특성으로 인해 기존의 이차전지가 사용되기 어려운 다양한 분야에 적용이 늘어가고 있는 추세에 있다.

Effects of the Mixing of an Active Material and a Conductive Additive on the Electric Double Layer Capacitor Performance in Organic Electrolyte

  • The effects of the mixing of an active material and a conductive additive on the electrochemical performance of an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) electrode were investigated. Coin-type EDLC cells with an organic electrolyte were fabricated using the electrode samples with different ball-milling times for the mixing of an active material and a conductive additive. The ball-milling time had a strong influence on the electrochemical performance of the EDLC electrode. The homogeneous mixing of the active material and the conductive additive by ball-milling was very important to obtain an efficient EDLC electrode. However, an EDLC electrode with an excessive ball-milling time displayed low electrical conductivity due to the characteristic change of a conductive additive, leading to poor electrochemical performance. The mixing of an active material and a conductive additive played a crucial role in determining the electrochemical performance of EDLC electrode. The optimal ball-milling time contributed to a homogeneous mixing of an active material and a conductive additive, leading to good electrochemical performance of the EDLC electrode.

  • 최근 컴퓨터, 전기, 전자, 통신, 반도체 장비 등의 전기적 외란에 민감한 부하 설비의 사용이 증가함에 따라 전력 품질에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 더 나아가서는 정밀 부하 장비들에 가장 빈번하게 발생하는 순간 전압 강하는 전력 품질 향상을 위해 적정한 보상이 필요하게 된다. 이를 위해 전기 이중층 커패시터 (EDLC : electric double layer capacitor)를 사용한 순간전압강하 보상장치가 개발되어 적용되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 순간전압강하 보상장치 (DVR : dynamic voltage restorer)에 사용되는 전기 이중층 커패시터(EDLC)에 비해 동일 사이즈 대비 에너지 밀도가 높은 하이브리드 커패시터 (hybrid capacitor)를 적용하는 연구를 하였고, 또한, 유도등의 비상 전원으로써 10년 이상의 수명을 보증할 수 있는 제품으로 하이브리드 커패시터 (hybrid capacitor)의 적용 가능성을 확인하였다.

  • In the DC electric railway system, the effective use of regenerative break energy is an important issue. Since regenerative break energy causes voltage rise or drop in the system, it should be also solved effectively. To solve the problems, applying electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) or voltage source converter (VSC) to the DC electric railway system has been studying. In this paper, the coordination of EDLC and VSC is proposed to solve the problem effectively with its coordinated control algorithm. The proposed method is tested to show its feasibility using Matlab/Simulink.

An Overview of the Activated Carbon Fibers for Electrochemical Applications

  • This article is concerned with the overview of the activated carbon fibers. Firstly, this review provides a comprehensive survey of the overall processes for the synthesis of the activated carbon fibers from the carbonaceous materials. Subsequently, the physicochemical properties such as pore structures and surface oxygen functional groups of the activated carbon fibers were discussed in detail. Finally, as electrochemical applications of the activated carbon fibers to electrode materials for electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC), the electrochemical characteristics of the activated carbon fiber electrodes and the various methods to improve the capacitance and rate capability were introduced. In particular, the effect of pore length distribution (PLD) on kinetics of double-layer charging/discharging was discussed based upon the experimental and theoretical results in our work. And then we discussed in detail the applications of the activated carbon fibers to adsorbent materials for purification of liquid and gas.

Studies on Electrical Double Layer Capacitor Based on Mesoporous Activated Carbon

  • Mesoporous activated carbon (AC) was prepared from aged petroleum coke through chemical activation. The AC has a specific surface area of 1733 $m^2/g$ and a mean pore diameter of 2.37 nm. The volume fraction of 2 to 4nm pores is 56.74%. At a current density of 10 mA/$cm^2$, a specific capacitance of 240 F/g is achieved representing the use factor of the surface area of 69.2%. And the electrical double layer capacitor (EDLC) based on the AC shows an excellent power performance. This result suggests that the presence of high fraction of mesopores can effectively increase the adsorption efficiency of the specific surface area of the AC and enhance the power performance of EDLC based on the efficient surface area of the AC.

EDLC용 CMC+PTFE 혼합바인더 전극의 전기적, 기계적 특성 (Electric and Mechanical Properties of CMC+PTFE Binary Binder Electrode for Electric Double Layer Capacitor)

  • This work describes the effect of electrode binder on the characteristics of electric double layer capacitor. Among carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA), and Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF), the unit cell using CMC showed good rate capability at current densities between 2.5 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$~100 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$. However, CMC as a binder is incongruent, because the electrode bound with CMC is rigid and easy to crack during a press and winding process for fabrication of capacitor. The unit cell capacitor using the electrode bound with binary binder composed of CMC and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), especially in composition CMC : PTFE =60 : 40 wt.%, has exhibited the better mechanical properties than those of the unit cell with CMC. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of CMC+PTFE electrode, coated on underlayer composed of CMC and carbon black, were much improved.
