  • Altruistic virtuous caring, possibly originated from religion and/or spirituality, is indispensable for holistic health through channeling vital energy with diet, exercise and meditation. This is a participant-observed medical anthropological research of a first generation Korean elderly immigrant health professional woman living in a four generational family. She had hypertension and was concerned about possible attack of stroke. Multi-religious, spiritual, and cosmological vital energy based on holistic Nature-oriented health beliefs and practices influenced by psychosocial, cultural and economic background, education, self- discipline and self-cultivation of individual, and group or family may create health. Self-care beliefs based on confidence in self-control of one's life style for oneself and others influence individual and group health practice. The holistic alternative health beliefs and practices were proved to be efficacious and beneficial by her self-evaluation, evaluation of significant others, biomedical professionals, and laboratory tests. That may have potential application for global health.

  • Inevitable immobilization after surgery on lower extremities can induce chronic constipation. Elderly diabetic women usually express ambiguous gastrointestinal symptoms and signs. We present here a case of panperitonitis developed from severe fecal impaction in an elderly diabetic woman after hand reconstruction using material harvested from the lower extremities. A 68-year-old diabetic female underwent anterolateral thigh free flap and wound revision twice on the left thumb. Three weeks after surgery, she complained about mild abdominal pain though she had daily defecation. Despite encouraging ambulation, her compliance was low. Resection of the sigmoid colon and colostomy were performed after diagnosis with bowel perforation. However, the patient went into septic shock and died with multiorgan failure after the guardians issued a DNR (do not resuscitate) order. For preventing bowel perforation, increased uptake of dietary fiber and early ambulation postoperatively should be encouraged, after even hand surgeries.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the factors influencing the stress of the elderly women by various tools and to provide basic data for adaptation to the aging women. For this purpose, stress was measured by stress measuring equipment (HRV) and stress measurement questionnaire (SRI) in 31 elderly women over 60 years old. In summary, the results of this study suggest that the worse the subjective health, and when there is a spouse, it predicts a stress. In order to reduce the stress of elderly women based on these results, physical health management and environmental factors that can enhance the intimacy between husband and wife are also necessary.

  • With the overall revision of the Welfare of the Aged Act in 1997, elderly welfare facilities have developed differently according to the size of locality, capacity, and social and economic characteristics. In response to the problem, various plans are being executed for expanding services and facilities for the aged. However, such efforts by the government have been focused on quantitative increase rather than on qualitative improvement, and there are not many high-quality elderly welfare facilities that meet the needs of the consumers, namely, the aged. In contrast, elderly welfare centers in Japan began to be founded from the 1960s and increased significantly from the 1970s and, as a result, 2,214 elderly welfare centers were in operation in 1995, maintaining a high level in quantity as well as in quality. Therefore, the present study surveyed using a checklist how elderly welfare centers in Japan, which are playing central roles in welfare facility services for the aged in Japan, design their indoor spaces reflecting elders' behavior and characteristics and, based on the results of the survey, classified spaces into shared spaces and individual service spaces and analyzed the spaces of each center using the checklist. The results from this case study will be used as basic data to establish standards for the space composition of elderly welfare facilities in Korea, which has 10 years' short history of elderly welfare facilities.

  • Focusing on Anna Katharine Green's Amelia Butterworth series and Agatha Christie's Miss Marple mysteries, this paper aims to examine the contradictory representation of a detective in spinster detective fiction. The spinster detective fiction reveals distinct ways of representing a female detective from the earlier woman detective fiction. Unlike the earlier woman detective represented as submissive and desperate for survival, a spinster detective is a wealthy, intelligent, brave, and independent woman from an upper class family. Since a spinster detective's attributes honor such masculine qualities as independence, intelligence, courage, and capacity for leadership, the spinster detective fiction has a possibility to threaten the established patriarchal authority. The possibility of gender disruption in the spinster detective fiction is, however, contained by the spinster's marginal position in the patriarchal system. Since a spinster exists outside the normal expectation of a woman's life in patriarchal society, a spinster detective creates no conflict with the dominant gender ideology. Furthermore, a spinster detective is represented as a conservative elderly woman expressing reactionary views on social, political issues including women's problems. The spinster detective fiction reinforces the established gender norms rather than challenges and questions them.

One of the potential problems it may cause is the issue of supporting subject of the aged. Parent-supporting and welfare for the aged become important social issues. Especially the supporting of the aged woman is more important issue because of their longer average life than man and their exposure to sexual discrimination and their welfare is very important issue of social welfare system. Accordingly the purpose of this study is to present the practical counter measure to the supporting of the aged woman. • The current national pension system tends to be sexually discriminatory in that it excludes elderly women. It is because the system is based on family incomes usually earned by men. Considering structural changes in a family - for example, a growing divorce rate, an increasing number of unmarried couples living together, and broken families - and socio-economic changes - such as an improved level of women's education and more female participation in economic activities, this paper will make some suggestions as follows: 1) to introduce basic pension system which guarantees incomes for the elderly with "one pension per person" policy; 2) to enlarge voluntary enrollment; 3) to implement pension credit system which pays women allowances for childbirth and upbringing; 4) to improve ways of allotting retirement pension of a husband; also to provide for an elderly woman both divided pension that derives from her husband's pension and an old-age pension of her own.
