  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the impact of religious participation on the depression of elder adults in USA. Specifically, this study examined how the influence of religious participation varied according to continuity or discontinuity of participation. Data from N=1,658 adults aged 65-90 who were respondents to two waves of the U.S. National survey of Families and Households 1987-1993 were used for these analyses. Depression was measured with a 12-item (of the original 20) modified version of the CES-D (Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression). Multivariate regression models controlling for several demographic variables were estimated. Some clear evidence was found supporting activity theory and continuity theory That is, participating in a religious organization role at Time 2 but not Time 1 (T1 No - T2 Yes) and being continuously involved in religious organizations both at Time 1 and Time 2 (T1 Yes -T2 Yes) were associated with reduced depression, compared to continuous nonparticipation in religious organizations (71 No -72 No).

  • The purpose of this research was to offer basic data for study of men's suits by investigating the buying conditions of men's suits. For data collection, a questionnaire was composed of a purchasing price, a purchasing place, the source of the information, the reason of the suit buying, a standard for choice, recognition of the ready-made suit's size and a number of suits they buy etc. The subjects of this research were male who aged 20∼59 and resided in Seoul and the capital region. The results of the research were summarized as the following : 1. Most of the men purchased a ready-made suit rather than a custom suit and a easy-order suit because of the convenience for buying. But the elder was tend to purchase a custom suit than the younger. And the reason of custom suit or easy-order suit buying was size for fitness. 2. It was usually done in a department store and an agency as a purchasing place. The men who resided in Seoul used a department store more than ones who resided in the capital region. Most of the men used bargain sale. The source of the information of suits came principally himself and a wife. Most of the men purchased the suits with their wives of themselves. The elder depended upon their wives for buying suit than the younger. The standards for buying the ready-made suit were color, style and price. The number of suit they buy in a year was 0.9 suits for S/F, 0.7 suits for winter, 0.4 suits for summer and 0.2 suits for combination. The main purchasing price was 150,000∼250,000 won. 3. Most of the consummer was to be satisfied a sense of wearing, color, design etc, but they ware not to be satisfied price, A/S, size etc for ready-made suits. • Existing equations for dispersion coefficient are analyzed in depth to select proper dispersion coefficient which can represent dispersion characteristics of natural streams. Several equations are tested with measured data which were collected in 26 streams in the United States. Findings of this study are as follows. Elder's equation should not be used to estimate dispersion coefficient of the one-dimensional dispersion model because it underestimates significantly. McQuivey and Keefer's equation is overestimating, whereas Magazine et al.'s equation is underestimating. However, Iwasa and Aya's equation predicts relatively well. Fischer's equation is generally overestimating. Liu's equation predicts quite well. The performance of Liu's equation is the best of all especially in terms of accuracy. However, Liu's equation is generally overestimating in case of large river because the square of channel width is included in the equation. Therefore, it is recommended not to use Liu's equation in case of large rivers, especially rivers of which channel width is larger than 200m.

  • Robots evolve from tools to information media since they generates information by interacting with human. As studies on robot-aided education are still in a starting phase, attempts need to be made to use robots for educational purposes and to investigate the effects of the use. It was showed that robot-aided learning was friendlier than other media assisted learning, and especially effective for motivating children. We developed the prototype robot Jenny that can help teachers as a educational media in class(i.e. as a T.A. robot, it can present robot contents on its chest to screen and explain about it when teacher asks). is a schoolmate for 5th or 6th grade children or an elder schoolmate for the rest. We performed the field trial at an elementary school. We carried out 9 classes for three subjects(english, korean, music) with -students in $4th{\sim}5th$ grade. They thought Jenny who was 13 years old as an elder schoolmate in 6th grade. Also, a significant difference was found in the interest and concentration of experimental groups from controlled groups.

  • In this study, we made a survey of the degree of satisfaction and performance of daily life activities on independent elderly households in the detached house. The purpose of this study is to suggest basic data for elderly housing design to be considered elder's characteristics. A survey carried out for 110 respondents with face to face interview visiting each house between May and June, 1999 with modified and drawn questionnaire from analysis of preparatory investigation data. The questionnaire was composed of the general characteristics of respondents, general characteristics of housing, residents' satisfaction with the use of housing space, performance degree of the elder's daily activities. To analyze the data of 106 cases, frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviations, one-way ANOVA, reliability analysis and Scheffe test were used by running SPSSWIN program. The results on the housing satisfaction and performance of activities in daily life of elderly in the detached house were as follows.: In this survey, the elderly had high value in satisfaction with the size of current house as the mean 3.14 points, but they were dissatisfied with the rising of house as the mean 2.82 points. The satisfaction with living room space was the highest but the satisfaction with toilet space was lower than others. Among the activities of daily life in housing space, housing related activity was the hardest to perform as the mean of 3.15 points. In consequence, consideration on and interest in the planning of residential spaces are needed so that the elderly can perform the action of housing life effectively and efficiently.

  • Purpose: The objectives of this study was to measure the outcomes of interventions on the health and social welfare of the elderly in a rural community in Korea. The project involved integrating services of one public health center with that of one social welfare agency, which were under different administrative structures. Method: A single group pretest-posttest design was used for this research. Seventy-five elderly residents living alone in a rural community participated in the study. All of them had coverage of free basic medical care and social welfare services by the government. Major activities for the intervention included: developing partnerships among community leaders/institutes; forming committees of community residents; educating care providers and volunteers; developing 8 integrated service programs and instruments; and organizing the networks. The 20-month intervention was care-managed by a public health nurse whom collaborated with social worker, and was assisted by volunteers. The t-test was utilized to analyze the outcome variables including the elder's health, social welfare and quality of life. A major limitation of this study was the lack of a control group. Results: The outcome of the intervention was shown by improved elder's health, social welfare needs, and quality of life. Integrating the services of public health centers with those of social welfare agencies is an effective way to improve the health of the elderly in the community. Conclusion: Developing community capacity with such integrated services will pay an important role in improving the health of the elderly who live alone.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore factors influencing the poverty of the elderly in Korea. In spite the fact that poverty of the elderly is more serious than any other demographic group, this important issue is rarely studied. Using the 7-year accumulated data from the KLIPS(Korean Labor and Income Study), I combined the work history of the elders, their demographic characteristics and residence to estimate pooled data analysis of the elderly after reaching age 55 and who are also only living by themselves(only the elders). The results of this study are as followed: first of all, age, education, marital status, wealth, residence and work history are shown to be significant predictors for the poverty of elderly. Second, the results show that factors influencing the poverty is different depending on the elder's (demographic) characteristics. For example, age and marital status is a more important predictor in female than in male, and wealth and health status is a more important predictor in elders who do not have a spouse than in elders who do. Such results suggest that the policy of the poverty of the elderly which is only focused on elder's characteristic is limited. Therefore we can suggest that a policy which workable people can earn decent income and saving wealth for their elderly in job is needed. Especially, policies on the 'Working Poor' and reconstruct the current public pension system is very much needed.

  • This study intends to investigate preschool-sibling's spontaneous imitation during their free-plays through the observation of 41 pairs of siblings aged from 1 to seven years. RESULTS : 1. Sibling's imitation showed in all subjects and had various distribution according to sibling's personalities. 2. Because of sibling's several facts. Their imitation showed differently. 1) Imitation appeared to decline to decline as children grew older. Imitation showed most frequently at the age of 2 years, and decreased after that. 2) Due to the effect of birth-order, the younger one showed his imitation approximately 4.3 times more than the elder one. 3) The effect of sex-composition seemed to coincide with the sex-typing hypothesis rather than the like-sex hypothesis. 4) Boy's imitation showed more frequently than girl's, but the difference was not so significant to be noticed. 3. In siblings, physical imitation was more frequent than verbal imitation, but it was reversed in peer's imitation. 4. The play-situation in which sibling's imitation showed mostly differed from that of Peer's imitation. That is, sibling's imitation appeared in solitary play but peers imitation did appear in associate play.
