Dynamic fracturing of anisotropic granite was investigated by SHPB (Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar). Energy absorption during the test and maximum stress were increased as strain rate increased. Maximum stresses in every direction were dependent on the strain rate but not so sensitive to anisotropy. Elastic wave velocity was decreased as strain rate increased and dependent on strain rate in every direction. Especially, elastic wave velocity decreased more rapidly in a strong rock.
Boryung sandstone and Yeosan marble were thermally cracked at predetermined temperatures ranging $200^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. Optical microscopy was utilized to observe thermally induced cracks and physical properties such as specific gravity, effective porosity k elastic wave velocity were measured. Optical observations show that all crystal boundaries of Yeosan marble heated to $600^{\circ}C$ open and new intracrystalline cracks seem to be occurred in all crystals, but developments of thermal cracks in Boryung sandstone heated to $600^{\circ}C$ are not pronounced. From $200^{\circ}C$ upwards, effective porosity and elastic wave velocity of Yeosan marble are sharpely increased, whereas effective porosity and elastic wave velocity of Boryung sandstone are weakly increased.
Non-destructive exploration using elastic waves has been widely used to characterize rock mass properties. Wave propagation in jointed rock masses is significantly governed by the characteristics and orientation of discontinuities. The relationship between spatial heterogeneity (i.e., joint spacing) and wavelength for elastic waves propagating through jointed rock masses have been investigated previously. Discontinuous rock masses can be considered as an equivalent continuum material when the wavelength of the propagating elastic wave exceeds the spatial heterogeneity. However, it is unclear how stress-dependent long-wavelength elastic waves propagate through a repetitive rock-joint system with multiple joints. A preliminary numerical simulation was performed in in this study to investigate long-wavelength elastic wave propagation in regularly jointed rock masses using the three-dimensional distinct element code program. First, experimental studies using the quasi-static resonant column (QSRC) testing device are performed on regularly jointed disc column specimens for three different materials (acetal, aluminum, and gneiss). The P- and S-wave velocities of the specimens are obtained under various normal stress levels. The normal and shear joint stiffness are calculated from the experimental results using an equivalent continuum model and used as input parameters for numerical analysis. The spatial and temporal sizes are carefully selected to guarantee a stable numerical simulation. Based on the calibrated jointed rock model, the numerical and experimental results are compared.

The paper studies the influence of the fluid flow velocity and flow direction in the initial state on the dispersion of the axisymmetric waves propagating in the inhomogeneously pre-stressed hollow cylinder containing this fluid. The corresponding eigenvalue problem is formulated within the scope of the three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in bodies with initial stresses, and with linearized Euler equations for the inviscid compressible fluid. The discrete-analytical solution method is employed, and analytical expressions of the sought values are derived from the solution to the corresponding field equations by employing the discrete-analytical method. The dispersion equation is obtained using these expressions and boundary and related compatibility conditions. Numerical results related to the action of the fluid flow velocity and flow direction on the influence of the inhomogeneous initial stresses on the dispersion curves in the zeroth and first modes are presented and discussed. As a result of the analyses of the numerical results, it is established how the fluid flow velocity and flow direction act on the magnitude of the influence of the initial inhomogeneous stresses on the wave propagation velocity in the cylinder containing the fluid.
The penetration testing provides 1 dimensional profiles of properties applicable to limited investigation areas, although N-value has been linked to a wide range of geotechnical design parameters based on empirical correlations. The nondestructive test using elastic waves is able to produce 2 or 3 dimensional property maps by inversion process with high efficiency in time and cost. As both N-value and elastic wave velocities share common dominant factors that include void ratio, degree of saturation, and in-situ effective stress, the correlation between the two properties has been empirically proposed by previous studies to assess engineering properties. This study presents the experimentally measured elastic wave velocities of Jumunjin sands under at-rest lateral displacement condition with varying the initial void ratio and degree of saturation. Results show that the stress condition predominantly influences the wave velocities whereas void ratio and saturation determine the stress-velocity tendency. The correlation among the dominant factors is proposed by multiple regression analysis with the discussion of relative impacts on parameters.

In this paper, when stress waves are propagated along the reinforced direction of the composite, the characteristic equation of Rayleigh wave is derived. The relationships between velocities of stress waves and Rayleigh wave are studied for anisotropic ratios(E(sub)11/E(sub)12 or E(sub)22/E(sub)11). The increments of anisotropic ratios is made by using known material properties and being constant of basic properties. When the anisotropic ratios are increased, Rayleigh wave velocities to the shear wave velocities are almost equal to 1 with any anisotropic ratios. Rayleigh wave velocities to the longitudinal wave velocities and Shear wave velocities ratio to the longitudinal wave velocities are almost identical each other, they are between 0.12 and 0.21. When the anisotropic ration is very high, that is, E(sub)11/E(sub)22=46.88, Rayleigh wave velocities and the shear wave velocities are almost constant with Poissons ratio, longitudinal wave velocities are very slowly increased with the increments of Poissons ratios. When E(sub)11(elastic modulus of the reinforced direction)and ν(sub)12 are constant, Rayleigh wave velocities and the shear wave velocities are steeply decreased with the increments of anisotropic ratios and the velocities of longitudinal wave are almost constant with them. When E(sub)22(elastic modulus of the normal direction to the fiber) and ν(sub)12 are constant, Rayeigh wave velocities is slowly increased with the increments of anisotropic ratios, the shear wave velocities are almost constant with them, the longitudinal wave velocities are steeply increased with them.

A new mechanical model for predicting the vibration of a pipe pile embedded in longitudinally layered visco-elastic media with radial inhomogeneity is proposed by extending Novak's plain-strain model and complex stiffness method to consider viscous-type damping. The analytical solutions for the dynamic impedance, the velocity admittance and the reflected signal of wave velocity at the pile head are also derived and subsequently verified by comparison with existing solutions. An extensive parametric analysis is further performed to examine the effects of shear modulus, viscous damping coefficient, coefficient of disturbance degree, weakening or strengthening range of surrounding soil and longitudinal soft or hard interbedded layer on the velocity admittance and the reflected signal of wave velocity at the pile head. It is demonstrated that the proposed model and the obtained solutions provide extensive possibilities for practical application compared with previous related studies.

Nondestructive test (NDT) provides much information on concrete without damage of structural functions. Of NDT methods, elastic wave propagation methods, such as ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) method and impact-echo (IE) method, have been successfully used to estimate the strength, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio of concrete as well as to detect the internal microstructural change and defects. In this study, the concretes with water-binder ratio ranging from 0.27 to 0.50 and fly ash content of 20% were made and then their longitudinal wave velocities were measured by UPV and IE method, respectively. Test results showed that the UPV is greater than the longitudinal wave velocity measured by the If method, i.e., rod-wave velocity obtained from the same concrete cylinder. It was found that the difference between the two types of velocities decreased with increasing the ages of concrete and strength level. Moreover, for the empirical formula, the dynamic Poisson's ratio, static and dynamic moduli of elasticity, and velocity-strength relationship were determined. It was observed that the Poisson's ratio and the modulus of elasticity determined by the dynamic method are greater than those determined by the static test. Consequently, for the more accurate estimation of concrete properties using the elastic wave velocities, the characteristics of these velocities should be understood.

Elastic wave velocity measurement technique such as impact-echo method and ultrasonic pulse velocity method has been successfully used to evaluate the moduli and strength of concrete. However, estimation results obtained by the NDT methods do not agree well with real things because longitudinal wave velocity is influenced by various factors. In this paper, among several factors influencing P-wave velocity, the influence of moisture content in concrete was investigated through the experiment. Test results show that longitudinal wave velocity is significantly affected by the moisture content of concrete, i.e., the lower moisture content. the lower velocity. Moisture content influences rod-wave velocity measured by impact-echo method stronger than ultrasonic pulse velocity measured by transmission method. During drying process with ages. the difference of increasing rate between longitudinal wave velocity and compressive strength of concrete is gradually increased. Therefore, to establish more accurate relationship between longitudinal wave velocity and strength, the difference of the increasing rate should be considered.
Various numerical methods in simulation of seismic wave propagation have been developed. Recently an innovative numerical method called as the Spectral Element Method (SEM) has been developed and used in wave propagation in 3-D elastic media. The SEM that easily implements the free surface of topography combines the flexibility of a finite element method with the accuracy of a spectral method. It is generally used a weak formulation of the equation of motion which are solved on a mesh of hexahedral elements based on the Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre integration rule. Variational formulations of velocity-stress motion are newly modified in order to implement ADE-PML (Auxiliary Differential Equation of Perfectly Matched Layer) in wave propagation in 3-D elastic media, because a general weak formulation has a difficulty in adapting CFS (Complex Frequency Shifted) PML (Perfectly Matched Layer). SEM of Velocity-Stress motion having ADE-PML that is very efficient in absorbing waves reflected from finite boundary is verified with simulation of 1-D and 3-D wave propagation.
