  • Composite thin-walled members for civil engineering application are mainly produced by pultrusion technique, and they are generally made of a polymeric resin system reinforced by E-glass fibers due to economical reason. This material combination results in low elastic moduli of the composite materials and makes the design of composite members to be governed by stability limit state. Therefore the buckling behavior of composite thin-walled members was experimentally investigated in the present study. Axial compression was applied on each specimens by a hydraulic ram and knife edge fixtures were placed at both ends to simulate simple boundary condition. Axial compression, lateral displacements and twisting at the mid-height of each specimen were measured by a set of transducers during buckling test. The experimental buckling loads were compared with analytical results obtained through isotropic formulas. In the calculation of analytical results, elastic properties such as Young's modulus(E) and shear modulus(G) were replaced with EL and GLT obtained from coupon tests, respectively.

  • In this paper, buckling analyses of composite concrete plate reinforced by piezoelectric nanoparticles is studied. The Halphin-Tsai model is used for obtaining the effective material properties of nano composite concrete plate. The nano composite concrete plate is modeled by Third order shear deformation theory (TSDT). The elastic medium is simulated by Winkler model. Employing nonlinear strains-displacements, stress-strain, the energy equations of concrete plate are obtained and using Hamilton's principal, the governing equations are derived. The governing equations are solved based on Navier method. The effect of piezoelectric nanoparticles volume percent, geometrical parameters of concrete plate and elastic foundation on the buckling load are investigated. Results showed that with increasing Piezoelectric nanoparticles volume percent, the buckling load increases.

  • This paper examines the thermal post-buckling behaviors of graphene-reinforced metal matrix composite (GRMMC) laminated cylindrical panels which possess in-plane negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) and rest on an elastic foundation. A panel consists of GRMMC layers of piece-wise varying graphene volume fractions to obtain functionally graded (FG) patterns. Based on the MD simulation results, the GRMMCs exhibit in-plane NPR as well as temperature-dependent material properties. The governing equations for the thermal post-buckling of panels are based on the Reddy's third order shear deformation shell theory. The von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relationship and the elastic foundation are also included. The nonlinear partial differential equations for GRMMC laminated cylindrical panels are solved by means of a singular perturbation technique in associate with a two-step perturbation approach and in the solution process the boundary layer effect is considered. The results of numerical investigations reveal that the thermal post-buckling strength for (0/90)5T GRMMC laminated cylindrical panels can be enhanced with an FG-X pattern. The thermal post-buckling load-deflection curve of 6-layer (0/90/0)S and (0/90)3T panels of FG-X pattern are higher than those of 10-layer (0/90/0/90/0)S and (0/90)5T panels of FG-X pattern.

  • In the present analysis, the buckling behavior of smart beams integrated into racket frames for enhancing player control was examined by numerical solutions and sinusoidal shear deformation theory. The smart beam under consideration is subjected to an external voltage in the thickness direction. The integration of this smart material into the structure of the racket should optimize performance, improving the racket's stability and responsiveness during play. In this, an accurate representation of complex shear effects is made by using a sinusoidal shear deformation theory, while the solution of the resulting governing equations is made by numerical methods. The critical buckling loads and the characteristics of deformation obtained through the analysis provide insight into some design parameters controlling and influencing stability. Obtained results are validated with other published works. The length and thickness of the beam, elastic medium, boundary condition, and influence of external voltages have been represented for buckling load in the structure. These results will help in designing smart racket frames using smart beams to provide more precision and control for the players in an intelligent way.

  • Stability analysis of three-layered piezoelectric doubly curved nano shell with accounting size dependency is performed in this paper based on first order shear deformation theory and curvilinear coordinate system relations. The elastic core is integrated with sensor and actuator layers subjected to applied electric potentials. The principle of virtual work is employed for derivation of governing equations of stability. The critical electrical and mechanical buckling loads are evaluated in terms of important parameters of the problem such as size-dependent parameter, two principle angle of doubly curved shell and two parameters of Pasternak's foundation. One can conclude that mechanical buckling loads are decreased with increase of nonlocal parameter while the electrical buckling loads are increased.

  • Bending, buckling and free vibration responses of functionally graded (FG) higher-order beams resting on two parameter (Winkler-Pasternak) elastic foundation are studied using a new inverse hyperbolic beam theory. The material properties of the beam are graded along the thickness direction according to the power-law distribution. In the present theory, the axial displacement accounts for an inverse hyperbolic distribution, and the transverse shear stress satisfies the traction-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the beams. Hamilton's principle is employed to derive the governing equations of motion. Navier type analytical solutions are obtained for the bending, bucking and vibration problems. Numerical results are obtained to investigate the effects of power-law index, length-to-thickness ratio and foundation parameter on the displacements, stresses, critical buckling loads and frequencies. Numerical results by using parabolic beam theory of Reddy and first-order beam theory of Timoshenko are specially generated for comparison of present results and found in excellent agreement with each other.

  • The present paper researches post-buckling behaviors of geometrically imperfect concrete beam resting on elastic foundation reinforced with graphene oxide powders (GOPs) based on finite element method (FEM). Distribution of GOPs are considered as uniform and linearly graded through the thickness. Geometric imperfection is considered as first buckling mode shape of the beam, the GOP reinforced beam is rested in initial position. The material properties of GOP reinforced composite have been calculated via employment of Halpin-Tsai micromechanical scheme. The provided refined beam element verifies the shear deformation impacts needless of any shear correction coefficient. The post-buckling load-deflections relations have been calculated via solving the governing equations having cubic non-linearity implementing FEM. Obtained findings indicate the importance of GOP distributions, GOP weight fraction, matrix material, geometric imperfection, shear deformation and foundation parameters on nonlinear buckling behavior of GOP reinforced beam.

  • In this paper, a new nonlocal trigonometric shear deformation theory is proposed for thermal buckling response of nanosize functionally graded (FG) nano-plates resting on two-parameter elastic foundation under various types of thermal environments. This theory uses for the first time, undetermined integral variables and it contains only four unknowns, that is even less than the first shear deformation theory (FSDT). It is considered that the FG nano-plate is exposed to uniform, linear and sinusoidal temperature rises. Mori-Tanaka model is utilized to define the gradually variation of material properties along the plate thickness. Nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen is employed to capture the size influences. Through the stationary potential energy the governing equations are derived for a refined nonlocal four-variable shear deformation plate theory and then solved analytically. A variety of examples is proposed to demonstrate the importance of elastic foundation parameters, various temperature fields, nonlocality, material composition, aspect and side-to-thickness ratios on critical stability temperatures of FG nano-plate.
