Stress field around axisymmetric partially supported cavities in elastic continuum-analytical solutions

  • The present paper will be concerned to the investigation of the stress-strain field around the cavity that is loaded or partially loaded at the inner surface by the rotationally symmetric loading. The cavity of the spherical, cylindrical or elliptical shape is situated in a stressed elastic continuum, subjected to the gravitation field. As the contribution to the similar investigations, the paper introduces the new function of loading in the form of the infinite sine series. Besides, in this paper the solution of stresses around an oblong ellipsoid cavity, has been obtained using appropriate curvilinear elliptical coordinates. This analytical approach avoids the solutions of the same problem that lead to expressions that contain rather complex integrations. Thus the presented solutions provide the applicable and explicit expressions for stresses and strains developed in infinite series with easily determinable coefficients by the use of contemporary mathematical packages. The numerical examples are also included to confirm the convergence of the obtained solutions.

Trial Installation and Performance Evaluation of Prefabricated Concrete Slab Track on Revenue Line (프리캐스트 콘크리트 슬래브궤도의 영업선 시험시공 및 성능평가)

  • To develop our original technology of concrete slab track, being widely accepted for new track, prefabricated concrete slab track, or precast concrete slab track has been developed. They have two different types according to slab shape and its dimensions, connection of slabs and connecting structure onto substructure. After the system design and successful performance evaluation in the laboratory, the trial installation on revenue line has been carried out. This paper is presenting the result of the trial installation and the performance tests in field. The performance tests have been performed as visual inspection for cracks and damages, measurement of track alignment and elastic behavior of track under passing trains. The performance test results during last 2 years have shown that no remarkable damages and settlements were found, and track alignment and elastic track behavior both exhibits good status.

A Non-Cirucular Contact Arc Model for Temper Rolling

  • A mathematical model for the analysis of roll gap phenomena in strip temper rolling process is described. The mechanical peculiarities of temper rolling process, such as high friction value and non-circular contact arc, low reduction and non-negligible entry and exit elastic zones as well as central restricted deformation (preliminary displacement or sticking) zone etc., are all taken into account. The deformation of work rolls is calculated with the influence function method and arbitrary contact arc shape is permitted. The strip deformation is modeled by slab method and the entry and exit elastic deformation zones are included. The restricted deformation zone near the neutral point is also considered. The concept and the calculation method of limiting preliminary displacement are used to determine the length of the central restricted deformation zone. The comparison of the model results with the measured mill data is also made.

Application of the exact spectral element method in the analysis of the smart functionally graded plate

  • This study aims to extend the application of the spectral element method (SEM) to wave propagation and free vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) plates integrated with thin piezoelectric layers, plates with tapered thickness and structure on elastic foundations. Also, the dynamic response of the smart FG plate under impact and moving loads is presented. In this paper, the dynamic stiffness matrix of the smart rectangular FG plate is determined by using the exact dynamic shape functions based on Mindlin plate assumptions. The low computational time and results' independence with the number of elements are two significant features of the SEM. Also, to prove the accuracy and efficiency of the SEM, results are compared with Abaqus simulations and those reported in references. Furthermore, the effects of boundary conditions, power-law index, piezoelectric layers thickness, and type of loading on the results are studied.

  • A seat track product is a car seat part that provides a base for vehicle seats. An ultra-high strength steel sheet is used to reduce the weight of vehicle body parts. However, the formability of an ultra-high strength steel sheet is poor because of its very low elongation and very high elastic deformation. For this reason, a new forming technology of an ultra-high strength steel sheet is required. The influence of spring-back of seat track parts on the shape freeze in forming processes was investigated to be solved by adjusting the appropriate tool design such as minus clearance between punch and die, and punch angle. This paper describes how to apply the spring-back prevention technique for improving shape freeze by using the ultra-high strength steel sheet with 980MPa to develop lightweight seat tract parts.

  • The mechanical properties of bellows, such as the extensibility and the strength can be changed depending on the shape. For the shipbuilding material, it is favorable that the fatigue life is long due to the elastic property and the reduction of thermal stress in piping system. Nowadays, the domestic production and design of bellows are based on the E.J.M.A Code. Therefore, the design standard is in need because of much errors and lack of detailed analysis. In this study, it is attempted to find out the optimal shape of U-type bellows using the finite element method. The effective factors, mountain height, length, thickness, and number of mountains and the length of joint are considered and the proper values are chosen for the simulation. The results shows that if the number of mountains are reduced, the volume decreases while the stress increases. However, the number of mountains are increased, the volume increases above the standard volume and the stress obviously increases. In addition, the effect of the thickness of bellows on the stress is very large. Both of the volume and stress are decreasing at a certain lower value region.

  • As the first step of study on fabrication of ceramic powders from phytoliths in rice, especially in rice husks, pulverization method of rice husks and the properties of milled rice husks were investigated. Impact methods, such as ball milling, were not meaningful for pulverizing elastic and thin fabric structure of rice husks. The most effective one was cutting method. In the present work, a rotating knife cutting method was applied to pulverizing rice husks. A 40-mesh screen was inserted under the rotating knives. The most portion of the milled powder was found in -50/+100 mesh section. Morphology of the milled rice husks revealed that the husks larger than 70 mesh were flake-like shape, at -70/+100 mesh section relatively equi-axed shape, at -170/+325 mesh section rod-like shape, and below 325 mesh section dust-like shape. Tap density of raw rice husks was about 0.1 $g/cm^3$, while those of milled rice husks were over $0.4 g/cm^3$. This meant that, for a given volume of reactor, raw material charge can be increased more that 4 times when using milled rice husks than unmilled one. True densities of unmilled and milled rice husks were higher than $1.4 g/cm^3$, and increased with decreasing milled sizes.

Structural Assessment of the Optimal Section Shape of FRP Based Stiffeners (FRP 보강재의 최적 단면 형상 결정 및 평가에 관한 연구)

  • This paper deals with the structural assessment of metallic and non-metallic stiffened/monocoque plated marine structures under a lateral pressure load to identify appropriate combination of material and section configuration, especially at the preliminary marine structural design stage. A generic rectangular plated structure is exemplified from the metallic superstructure of a marine vessel and its structural topology is varied for the structural assessment. In total 13 different structural topologies are proposed and assessed using appropriate elastic solutions in conjunction with a set of stress and deflection limits obtained from practice. The geometry dimensions and weights of the structural topologies are calculated, and subsequently, the costs of the materials used in the structural topologies are reviewed to discuss the cost-effectiveness of the materials. Finally, conclusions are made with the aim of suggesting suitable structural topology for the marine structural member considered in this paper.

An Approximate Solution for the Local Buckling Coefficient of Pultruded I-Shape Compression Members (펄트루젼 I형 단면 압축재의 국부좌굴계수 계산을 위한 근사식의 개발)

  • The pultruded structural shapes are usually composed of thin-walled plate elements. Because the composite material has relatively low elastic moduli, the design of pultruded compression members may not be governed by the material strength limit state but by the stability limit state such as the local buckling or the global buckling. Therefore, the stability limit state must be checked to design pultruded columns. In this research, the local buckling analysis of pultruded I-shape column was conducted for various composite materials using the closed-form solution. To establish the design guidelines for the local buckling of pultruded I-shape compression members, the simplified form of equation to find the local buckling coefficient of pultruded I-shape column was proposed as a function of mechanical properties and the width ratio of plate components using the results obtainde by the closed-form solution. In order to verify the validity of proposed solution, the results obtained by the proposed approximate solution were compared with those of the closed-form solution and the experimental results.

Study on Springback Control in Reconfigurable Die Forming (가변금형 성형에서 탄성회복 제어 연구)

  • Springback is one of the most difficult phenomena to analyze and control in sheet forming. Most of traditional springback control methods rely on experiences of skilled workers in industrial fields. This study focuses on prediction and generation of optimum reconfigurable die surfaces to control shape errors originated by springback. For this purpose, a deformation transfer function(DTF) was combined with finite element analysis of the springback in the 2D sheet forming model of elastic-perfectly plastic materials under the condition without blank holder. The results showed shape errors within 1% of the objective shape, which were comparable with analytically predicted errors. In addition to this theoretical analysis, DTF method was also applied to 2D and 3D sheet forming experiments. The experimental results showed ${\pm}0.5$ mm and ${\pm}1.0$ mm shape error distribution respectively, demonstrating that reconfigurable die surfaces were predicted well by the DTF method. Irrespective of material properties and sheet thickness, the DTF method was applicable not only to FEM simulation but also to 2D and 3D elasto-reconfigurable die forming. Consequently, this study shows that springback can be controlled effectively in the elasto-RDF system by using the DTF method.
