To evaluate the aging of a rubber pad in power window switch which is the part of a vehicle, the accelerated thermal aging test of rubber pad material is performed. Finite element analysis was performed using the nonlinear material constants of the rubber pad to calculate the operating force, and the Arrhenius relationship was derived from the aging temperature and time. The aging test was performed at 150, 180, 210, or 240 ℃ for 1 to 60 days. When the operating force of the rubber pad is changed by 10% from the initial value, the service life is expected to be 113 years, which is much longer than the life of the vehicle. This indicates that the aging life of the rubber pad is sufficiently safe and the operating force of the rubber pad during the life of the vehicle (20 years) was decreased by approximately 8.4%. By examining the correlation between the shear elastic modulus and operating force calculated from finite element analysis under each aging test condition, the changes in the operating force of the rubber pad and the shear elastic modulus showed good linear relationship. The aging life could be predicted by the change in shear elastic modulus and a process for predicting the aging life of automotive power window switch rubber pad parts is described herein.

For investigating rubber pad sheet metal forming process, the rubber pad deformation characteristics as well as the contact problem of rubber pad-sheet metal has been analyzed. In this paper, the behavior of the rubber deformation is represented by hyper-elastic constitutive relations based on a generalized Mooney-Rivlin model. Finite element procedures for the two-dimensional responses, employing total Lagrangian formulations are implemented in an implicit form. The volumetric incompressibility condition of the rubber deformation is included in the formulation by using penalty method. The sheet metal is characterized by elasto-plastic material with strain hardening effect and analyzed by a commercial code. The contact procedure and interface program between rubber pad and sheet metal are implemented. Inflation experiment of circular rubber pad identifies the behaviour of the rubber pad deformation during the process. The various form dies and scaled down apparatus of the rubber-pad forming process are fabricated for simulating realistic forming process. The obtaining experimental data and FEM solutions were compared. The numerical solutions illustrate fair agreement with experimental results. The forming pressure distribution according to the dimensions of sheet metal and rubber pads, various rubber models and rubber material are also compared and discussed.

This paper is the first one of two-parted research efforts focusing on the modeling of rubber pad forming process. The rubber pad, driven by the pressurized fluid during the forming process, pushes the sheet metal to solid tool half and forms a part to final shape. In this part of the paper, a numerical procedure for the FE analysis of the rubber pad deformation is presented. The developed three-dimensional FE model is based on the total Lagrangian description of rubber maerial characterized by nearly incompressible hyper-elastic behavior under a large deformation assumption. Validity of the model as well as effects of different algorithms corresponding to incompresibility constraints and time integration methods on numerical solution responses are also demonstrated.

This paper applies the FE analysis procedure, developed in the Part I of the companion article, to the three-dimensional rubber pad deformation during rubber-pad forming process. Effects of different algorithms corresponding to incompressibility constraint and time integration methods on numerical solution responses are investigated. Laboratory scale experiments support the validity of the developed FE procedure an demonstrate the accuracy of the numerical models. Full scale model responses are also predicted using the reasonable method and parameters obtained in laboratory modeling.
The aim of the present study is the characteristics of bridge rubber pads and suggested how to determine the stiffness the pads. A disk bearing is operated as an elastic bearing in the vertical direction and is composed of a Polyether Urethane (polyurethane) disk for elastic support and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) to accommodate movement. Static tests are conducted in a laboratory to determine the static behavior of a Polyurethane disk. Finite Element (FE) analysis is also performed to verify the static performance. For dynamic behavior, four disk bearings having the identical Polyurethane disk used in the static tests are installed in a full size railway bridge and tested under a running locomotive. From the tests results, the static and dynamic stiffness of disk bearings are estimated and compared with each other. In the procedure to estimate the stiffness of a pad, the dead load(pre-load) of a bridge and live load of a vehicle are considered.
Shear tests were carried out on interface between two concrete eco-blocks which comprise segmental retaining wall. Three interface conditions were considered : 1) direct contact of two blocks, 2) placing rubber pad between two blocks, 3) placing rubber pad and shear key between two blocks. According to shear tests, shear load-shear displacement relationship which was obtained from direct contact of two blocks was similar to elastic-perfectly plastic behavior. Ductile behavior of shear load-shear displacement relationship was observed for the interface condition of placing rubber pad. Apparent minimum shear capacities and apparent friction angles for the interface conditions of direct contact of two blocks, placing rubber pad between two blocks, placing rubber pad and shear key were 1.7 kN/m, $27.6^{\circ}$ and 4.2 kN/m, $26.2^{\circ}$ and 20.9 kN/m, $26.0^{\circ}$ respectively.

In general, materials that can be used to form elastic pads, such as urethane and rubber, are often used in flexible forming processes by inserting the pads between a blank and flexible die for smoothing the forming surface that is formed by a reconfigurable die. In this study, the effects of the elastic pad on formability in the flexible forming process for sheet metals are investigated by performing numerical simulations. In the simulation, the hyperelastic material model is used, where the urethane elastic pads serve as elastic cushions. Case studies are carried out for elastic materials with different hardness values and thicknesses. The results are used to evaluate formability by comparing the configuration of the deformed blank and its major cross-sectional profiles. It is verified that the elastic pad used in the flexible forming process for sheet materials should be hard and that its thickness should be chosen appropriately.

Rail-pad is an important and readily replaceable component of a railway track, as it is the elastic layer between the rail and the sleeper. Characteristics and useful lifetime prediction of rail-pad was very important in design procedure to assure the safety and reliability. In this paper, the degradation of rail pad properties as a function of their in-service life is studied with a view of developing a technique for predicting the optimum period of track maintenance with regard to pad replacement. In order to investigate the useful lifetime, the accelerate test were carried out. Accelerated test results changes as the threshold are used for assessment of the useful life and time to threshold value were plotted against reciprocal of absolute temperature to give the Arrhenius plot. By using the acceleration test, several useful lifetime prediction for rail-pads were proposed.
Many animals possess on their legs adhesive pads, which have undergone evolutionary optimization to be able to attach to variable substrates and to control adhesive forces during locomotion. Insect adhesive pads are either relatively smooth or densely covered with specialized adhesive hairs. Theoretical models predict that adhesion can be increased by splitting the contact zone into many microscopic, elastic subunits, which provides a functional explanation for the widespread 'hairy' design. In many hairy and all smooth attachment systems, the adhesive contact is mediated by a thin film of liquid secretion between the cuticle and the substrate. By using interference reflection microscopy (IRM), the thickness and viscosity of the secretion film was estimated in Weaver ants (Oecophylla smaragdina). 'Footprint' droplets deposited on glass are hydrophobic and form low contact angles. IRM of insect pads in contact showed that the adhesive liquid is an emulsion consisting of hydrophilic, volatile droplets dispersed in a persistent, hydrophobic phase. I tested predictions derived from film thickness and viscosity by measuring friction forces of Weaver ants on a smooth substrate. The measured friction forces were much greater than expected assuming a homogenous film between the pad and the surface. The findings indicate that the rubbery pad cuticle directly interacts with the substrate. To achieve intimate contact between the cuticle and the surface, secretion must drain away, which may be facilitated by microfolds on the surface of smooth insect pads. I propose a combined wet adhesion/rubber friction model of insect surface attachment that explains both the presence of a significant static friction component and the velocity-dependence of sliding friction.
In many applications. rubber components undergo dynamic stresses or deformations of fairly large magnitude. Since rubbers are not fully elastic, a part of the mechanical energy is converted into heat due to the hysteresis loss. Heat generation without adequate heat dissipation leads to heat build up. i. e. internal temperature rise. The purpose of this paper is to predict temperature rise caused by the hysteresis loss, in a rubber pad subjected to complex dynamic deformation. In this unsteady thermal analysis, the temperature distributions of track components are displayed in contour shapes and the temperature variations of some important nodes are represented graphically with respect to the running time of the tank.
