  • In this study, porous titanium samples were manufactured by space holder methods using two kinds of urea and sodium chloride space holders. Three-dimensional pore structures were obtained by a computed-tomography (CT) technique and utilized for finite element analysis in order to investigate the mechanical properties. The CT-based finite element analyses were in better agreement with the experimental results than unit cell model-based analyses. Both the experimental and CT-based results showed the same tendency that the elastic modulus decreased with increasing the porosities. The total porosity of the bulk body plays a key role in determining the elastic modulus of porous materials.

  • The Usages of composite materials have been steadily on the rise in the industries of automobiles, air crafts, shipbuilding and other structures for transportations. Commonly required in those industries are light weight and high strength of the structures. Consequently, serious efforts in research have been focused on searching for light materials and on developments and characterizations of advanced substitutes including various kinds of composite materials. In this investigation, transversely isotropic composite materials are chosen and formed into two kinds of beams; Euler-Bernoulli beam(thin team) and Timoshenko beam(thick beam) for determinations of elastic constants. As an experimental technique Impulse Excitation Method is utilized to measure resonance frequencies of the beams of the composite materials in vibration tests. Elastic constants are evaluated from measured resonance frequencies for the two types of beams to observe and establish possible existence of effects of rotary inertia and shear deformations.

  • Environment-friendly shock-absorbing materials were made of wastepaper such as old corrugated containers (OCC) and old newspapers (ONP) with a vacuum forming method. The plate-like cushioning materials made of OCC and ONP respectively by vacuum forming showed superior shock-absorbing properties with lower elastic moduli compared to expanded polystyrene (EPS) and pulp mold. Even though the plate-like materials had many free voids in their fiber structure, their apparent densities (${\approx}0.1g/cm^{3}$) were a little higher than that of EPS (${\approx}0.03g/cm^{3}$) and much lower than that of pulp mold (${\approx}0.3g/cm^{3}$). However, the elastic moduli of the cushioning materials made of wastepaper were much lower than that of EPS or pulp mold. This finding implies that the cushioning materials made of OCC fibers containing more lignin than ONP show better shock-absorbing properties than ONP Moreover, the cushioning materials made of OCC and ONP respectively showed greater porosity than pulp mold. The addition of cationic starch to the cushioning materials contributed to an increase in the elastic modulus to the same level as that of EPS. Furthermore, the deterioration in fiber quality by repeated use of wastepaper played a great role in improving shock-absorbing ability.

  • In this study, we investigate the vibration of single-walled carbon nanotubes embedded in a polymeric matrix using nonlocal elasticity theories with account arbitrary boundary conditions effects. A Winkler type elastic foundation is employed to model the interaction of nanobeam and the surrounding elastic medium. Influence of all parameters such as nonlocal small-scale effects, Winkler modulus parameter, vibration mode and aspect ratio of nanobeam on the vibration frequency are analyzed and discussed. The mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes and polymer matrix are treated and an analytical solution is derived using the governing equations of the nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beam models. Solutions have been compared with those obtained in the literature and The results obtained show that the non-dimensional natural frequency is significantly affected by the small-scale coefficient, the vibrational mode number and the elastic medium.

  • This paper presents the results of an elastic buckling analysis of orthotropic plate under in-plane linearly distributed forces. The analytical solution for the orthotropic plate whose boundaries were assumed to be simply supported was derived in the previous work. In this study the loaded edges of plate are assumed to be simply supported and other two edges are assumed to be fixed. For the buckling analysis Rayleigh-Ritz method is employed. Graphical form of results for finding the elastic buckling strength of orthotropic plate under in-plane linearly distributed forces is presented.

  • Shape memory alloy (SMA) has demonstrated its potentials for various smart structure applications. SMA wires undergo a reversible phase transformation from martensite to austenite as temperature increases. This transformation leads to shape recovery and associated recovery strains. If SMA actuators are embedded off the neutral surface and are oriented in arbitrary angles with respect to a beam axis, then the beam bends and twists due to the coupling effects of recovery strains activated. In this study, the bending and twisting of a SMA/Composite beam were controlled by both electric resistive heating and passive elastic tailoring. 3-dimensional finite element formulations were derived and validated to analyze the responses of the SMA/Composite beam. Numerical results show that the shape of the SMA/Composite beam can be controlled by judicious choices of control temperatures, SMA angles, and elastic tailoring.

  • This paper presents the results of an elastic buckling analysis of elastically restrained orthotropic plate with a longitudinal stiffener under in-plane linearly distributed load. It is assumed that the loaded edges of web plate are simply supported and other two edges are elastically restrained against rotation. The stiffener is modeled as a beam element and its torsional rigidity is neglected. For the buckling analysis Lagrangian multiplier method is employed. The effects of restraint and longitudinal stiffener are presented in a graphical form.

  • This paper presents plastic limit loads and approximate J-integral estimates for circumferential part-through surface crack at the interface between elbows and pipes. Based on finite element limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials, plastic limit moments under in-plane bending are obtained and it is found that they are similar those for circumferential part-through surface cracks in the center of elbow. Based on present FE results, closed-form limit load solutions are proposed. Welds are not explicitly considered and all materials are assumed to be homogeneous. And the method to estimate the elastic-plastic J-integral for circumferential part-through surface cracks at the interface between elbows and straight pipes is proposed based on the reference stress approach, which was compared with corresponding solutions for straight pipes.

  • Mechanical properties of gold bonding wire for VLSI packaging have been studied. The diameters of gold wires are about 20-30 micrometer and fracture loads are 8-20 gram force. The elastic modulus, yield strength, fracture strength and elongation properties have been evaluated by micro-tensile test method. This work discusses for an appropriate selection of micro-force testing system and grip design in mim testing. The best method to determine gauge length of wire and to measure tensile properties has been proposed. The mechanical properties such as strength and elastic modulus of current gold bonding wire are higher than pure those of gold wire.

  • An integrated analysis for the thermo-elastic deformation, fatigue, wear and brittle damage evolution of the shrink-fitted die with multi stress-ring of dissimilar materials is presented. A simple numerical algorithm for the moving elastic boundaries characterizing the contacts of the insert and multi stress-rings is presented. The initial stress distribution in the die due to shrink-fit is considered and the traction at the die surface contacting with the work piece is obtained by analyzing the elasto-plastic deformation of work piece. Elastic analysis of the separate-type die is performed and then the evolution of brittle damage, wear and fatigue life are predicted. This integrated analysis is applied to the extrusion die with two layers of stress-rings and the results are discussed in detail.
