  • Elastic elements, at first, were extensively used in suspensions as vibration isolators at joints. Nowadays they are used to improve stability and handling. The design of these elements has become a very important matter since the loading condition of the mechanism gives a mew suspension geometry without any modification. This paper presents an analysis of forces and moments of joints with elastic elements in the McPherson suspension mechanism to evaluate accurately the elastic deformation using the displacement matrix method in conjunction with the equilibrium equations. First the suspension is modeled as a multi-loop spatial rigid-body guidance mechanism which has elastic elements at the hardpoints of the suspension. Then a method and design euqations are developed to analyze the suspension characteristics by the various tire load. Also the displacement matrices and constraint equations for links are appllied to determine the sensitivity of the suspension mechanism. Finally this approach may conduct a realistic design of suspension mechanisms with elastic elements to improve the performance of the automobile under various driving conditions.

  • The behavior of jointed rock mass is much different from that of intact rock due to the presence of joints. Similarly, the characteristics of elastic wave propagation in jointed rock are considerably different from those of intact rock. The propagation of elastic waves in jointed rock is greatly dependent on the state of stress. The roughness, filling materials, and spacing of joints also affect wave propagation in jointed rock. If the wavelength of elastic waves is much larger than the spacing between joints, wave propagation in jointed rock mass can be considered as wave propagation in equivalent continuum. A rock resonant column testing apparatus is made to measure elastic waves propagating through jointed rock in the state of equivalent continuum. Three types of wave, i.e, torsional, longitudinal and flexural waves are monitored during rock resonant column tests. Various roughness and filling materials are applied to joints, and rock columns with various spacings are used to understand how these factors affect wave propagation under a small strain condition. The experimental results suggest that the characteristics of wave propagation in jointed rock mass are governed by the state of stress and influenced by roughness, filling materials and joint spacings.

  • In this study, the stress concentration phenomenon for the dissimilar joints(ceramic-metal) bonded by thermal treating using a soft-insert metal(copper) was investigated with the aid of FEM(finite element method) under the load condition of uniform tension. The analysis was carried out by the supposing that stress states are plane stress or plane strain and elastic or elastic-plastic. And the Von Mises yield criterion and the incremental theory as plastic flow were adopted in this analysis. As the summarized results obtained, the stress concentration phenomenon was severer as the soft insert metal was thicker, in plane strain than in plane stress and in elastic-plastic state than in elastic state. Furthermore, the inducing mechanism of stress concentration was well expressed by the constraint forces(Fc) generated between the soft and the hard material.

  • This note is concerned with the point to point control of manipulators having elastic joints. We present a PD control algorithm which is adaptive with respect to the gravity and elastic parameters of robot manipulators. While the conventional control law is used, a new adaptive law is used to improve the performance. The proposed controller is shown to be stable. It is Shown that steady-state position error converges to zero through some simulations concerning the manipulator with three revolute elastic joints.

  • The objective of this task is to develop seismic design and capacity detailing recommendations for all portions of bridge piers that do not participate as primary energy dissipation elements. particular emphasis is given to the design requirements of cap beams and their connections of multi-column bridge pier bents. By prestressing the joints it is possible to ensure the joints remain elastic. Prestress enhances the bond and anchorage of the longitudinal column bars and also minimizes or avoids diagonal shear cracking in the joints.

  • The study presented experimental and numerical investigation on the seismic performance of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) L-shaped column- reinforced concrete (RC) beam joints. Various parameters described as steel configuration form, axial compressive ratio, loading angle, and the existence of slab were examined through 4 planar joints and 7 spatial joints. The characteristics of the load-displacement response included the bearing capacity, ductility, story drift ratio, energy-dissipating capacity, and stiffness degradation were analyzed. The results showed that shear failure and flexural failure in the beam tip were observed for planar joints and spatial joint, respectively. And RC joint with slab failed with the plastic hinge in the slab and bottom of the beam. The results indicated that hysteretic curves of spatial joints with solid-web steel were plumper than those with hollow-web specimens. The capacity of planar joints was higher than that of space joints, while the opposite was true for energy-dissipation capacity and ductility. The high compression ratio contributed to the increase in capacity and initial stiffness of the joint. The elastic and elastic-plastic story deformation capacity of L-shaped column frame joints satisfied the code requirement. A design formula of joint shear resistance based on the superposition theory and equilibrium plasticity truss model was proposed for engineering application.

  • Thermal elastic-plastic analysis was performed to assess the initial residual stress distribution of welded joints considering temperature dependent material properties. The test model was the idealized boxing fillet specimen, frequently appeared in the joints of longitudinal and transverse members of ship structure. Residual stress relaxations due to external loads were analyzed by subsequent elastic-plastic analysis considering loading and unloading steps, and the characteristics of residual stress relaxations were discussed with the levels of external loads. Additionally, to define the fatigue life of crack initiation and propagation, the S-N data for each crack length were appraised.

  • Experience of previous earthquakes shows that a considerable portion of concrete precast buildings sustain relatively large damages especially at the beam-column joints where the damages are mostly caused by bar slippage. Precast concrete buildings have a kind of discontinuity in their beam-column joints, so reinforcement details in this area is too important and have a significant effect on the seismic behavior of these structures. In this study, a relatively simple and efficient nonlinear model is proposed to simulate pre- and post-elastic behavior of the joints in usual practice of precast concrete building. In this model, beam and column components are represented by linear elastic elements, dimensions of the joint panel are defined by rigid elements, and effect of slip is taken into account by a nonlinear rotational spring at the end of the beam. The proposed method is validated by experimental results for both internal and external joints. In addition, the seismic behavior of the precast building damaged during Bojnord earthquake 13 May 2017, is investigated by using the proposed model for the beam-column joints. Damage unexpectedly inducing the precast building in the moderate Bojnord earthquake may confirm that bearing capacity of the precast building was underestimated without consideration of joint behavior effect.

  • In this paper a safe arm with passive compliant joints and visco-elastic covering is designed for human-friendly service robots. The passive compliant joint (PCJ) is composed of a magneto-rheological (MR) damper and a rotary spring. In addition to a spring component, a damper is introduced for damping effect and works as a rotary viscous damper by controlling the electric current according to the angular velocity of spring displacement. When a manipulator interacts with human or environment, the joints and cover passively operate and attenuate the applied collision force. The force attenuation property is verified through collision experiments showing that the proposed passive arm is safe in view of some evaluation measures.
