  • The possibility of energy harvesting as well as vibration of a three-layered beam consisting of two piezoelectric layers and one core layer made of nonpiezoelectric material is investigated using nonlocal strain gradient theory. The three-layered nanobeam is resting on an elastic foundation. Hamilton's principle is used to derive governing equations and associated boundary conditions. The generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) was used to discretize the equations, and the Newmark beta method was used to solve them. The size-dependency of the elastic foundation is considered using two-phase elasticity. The equations, as well as the solution procedure, are validated utilizing some compassion studies. This work can be a basis for future studies on energy harvesting of small scales.

  • Recently, it becomes a very important issue to consider the mechanical systems such as high-speed vehicle and railway train moving on a flexible beam structure. Using general approach proposed in the first part of this paper, it tis possible to predict planar motion of constrained mechanical system and elastic structure with various kinds of foundation supporting condition. Combined differential-algebraic equations of motion derived from both multibody dynamics theory and Finite Element Method can be analyzed numerically using generalized coordinate partitioning algorithm. To verify the validity of this approach, results from simply supported elastic beam subjected to a moving load are compared with exact solution from a reference. Finally, parameter study is conducted for a moving vehicle model on a simply supported 3-span bridge.

  • The main purpose of the current research is to develop an efficient two variables trigonometric shear deformation beam theory to investigate the buckling behavior of symmetric and non-symmetric functionally graded carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) beam resting on an elastic foundation with various boundary conditions. The proposed theory obviates the use to shear correction factors as it satisfies the parabolic variation of through-thickness shear stress distribution. The composite beam is made of a polymeric matrix reinforced by aligned and distributed single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with different patterns of reinforcement. The material properties of the FG-CNTRC beam are estimated by using the rule of mixture. The governing equilibrium equations are solved by using new analytical solutions based on the Galerkin method. The robustness and accuracy of the proposed analytical model are demonstrated by comparing its results with those available by other researchers in the existing literature. Moreover, a comprehensive parametric study is presented and discussed in detail to show the effects of CNTs volume fraction, distribution patterns of CNTs, boundary conditions, length-to-thickness ratio, and spring constant factors on the buckling response of FG-CNTRC beam. Some new referential results are reported for the first time, which will serve as a benchmark for future research.

  • A mathematical model for the nonlinear dynamics of a rotating beam with flexible root attached to a rotating hub with elastic foundation is developed. The model is developed based on the large planar and flexural deformation theory and the potential energy method to account for axial shortening due to bending deformation. In addition the exact nonlinear curvature is used in the system potential energy. The Lagrangian dynamics and the assumed mode method is used to derive the nonlinear coupled equations of motion hub rotation, beam tip deflection and hub horizontal and vertical displacements. The derived nonlinear model is simulated numerically and the results are presented and discussed for the effect of root flexibility, hub stiffness, torque type, torque period and excitation frequency and amplitude on the dynamic behavior of the rotating beam-hub and on its stability.

  • In this investigation, study of the static and dynamic behaviors of functionally graded beams (FGB) is presented using a hyperbolic shear deformation theory (HySDT). The simply supported FG-beam is resting on the elastic foundation (Winkler-Pasternak types). The properties of the FG-beam vary according to exponential (E-FGB) and power-law (P-FGB) distributions. The governing equations are determined via Hamilton's principle and solved by using Navier's method. To show the accuracy of this model (HySDT), the current results are compared with those available in the literature. Also, various numerical results are discussed to show the influence of the variation of the volume fraction of the materials, the power index, the slenderness ratio and the effect of Winkler spring constant on the fundamental frequency, center deflection, normal and shear stress of FG-beam.

  • This paper investigates the static and dynamic behaviors of imperfect single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) modeled as a beam structure by using energy-equivalent model (EEM), for the first time. Based on EEM Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio for zigzag (n, 0), and armchair (n, n) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are presented as functions of orientation and force constants. Nonlinear Euler-Bernoulli assumptions are proposed considering mid-plane stretching to exhibit a large deformation and a small strain. To simulate the interaction of CNTs with the surrounding elastic medium, nonlinear elastic foundation with cubic nonlinearity and shearing layer are employed. The equation governed the motion of curved CNTs is a nonlinear integropartial-differential equation. It is derived in terms of only the lateral displacement. The nonlinear integro-differential equation that governs the buckling of CNT is numerically solved using the differential integral quadrature method (DIQM) and Newton's method. The linear vibration problem around the static configurations is discretized using DIQM and then is solved as a linear eigenvalue problem. Numerical results are depicted to illustrate the influence of chirality angle and imperfection amplitude on static response, buckling load and dynamic behaviors of armchair and zigzag CNTs. Both, clamped-clamped (C-C) and simply supported (SS-SS) boundary conditions are examined. This model is helpful especially in mechanical design of NEMS manufactured from CNTs.

  • The soil-structure interactions are caused by the point sources of explosions, deriving piles, compaction of foundations and excavations those are frequently arose in the construction sites. Thus the analysis of soil-structure interactions is one of the most important subjects in the fields of dynamic analysis and vibration control. From this viewpoint, the aim of this study is to collect the basic data for designing foundation structures throughout understanding the dynamic structural behavior, which is embodied by the dynamic analysis of soil-structure systems. In this study, the dynamic analyses of stiffened thick plates subjected to in-plane stress on elastic foundations are carried out. The foundation is modeled as Pasternak foundation that includes the continuity effect of foundations. Also both the Mindlin plate theory and Timoshenko beam-column theory are used for analyzing the thick plates and beams, respectively.

  • Ths paper was aimed to investigate the effect of reinforcement for the deformation characteristics of clayey foundation. Among numerous improvement method of foundation, only geotextil-reinforced foundation and foundation with both geotextile and sand mat which were 2-dimensional model clayey foundations were selected for load test in order to obtain fundamental results in analizing the behavior of the foundation with geotextile. To scrutinize the behavior characteristics and effect of reinforcement, the model foundations were constructed with various conditions on the location of layout of geotextile, the number of layouts and the depth of sand mat As for the technique of the numerical analysis elasto-plastic constitutive model for clayey soil, beam element for geotextile and elastic model for sand were respectively employed. Interface element was introduced for the block between materials with different rigidity. Observed values and numerical results were compared with satisfactory correspondence, which proved that the numercial technique developed in this paper was available.

  • This manuscript presents a comprehensive mathematical model to investigate buckling stability and postbuckling response of bio-inspired composite beams with helicoidal orientations. The higher order shear deformation theory as well as the Timoshenko beam theories are exploited to include the shear influence. The equilibrium nonlinear integro-differential equations of helicoidal composite beams are derived in detail using the energy conservation principle. Differential integral quadrature method (DIQM) is employed to discretize the nonlinear system of differential equations and solve them via the Newton iterative method then obtain the response of helicoidal composite beam. Numerical calculations are carried out to check the validity of the present solution methodology and to quantify the effects of helicoidal rotation angle, elastic foundation constants, beam theories, geometric and material properties on buckling, postbuckling of bio-inspired helicoidal composite beams. The developed model can be employed in design and analysis of curved helicoidal composite beam used in aerospace and naval structures.
