  • In this paper, theoretical approach with applications of the periodic wave solutions in an elastic material is applied by study the effect of initial stress, and rotation, on the radial displacement and the corresponding stresses in non-homogeneous orthotropic material. An Analytical solution for the elastodynamic equation has obtained concerning the component of displacement. The variations of stresses and displacements have shown graphically. Comparisons with previously published results in the absence of initial stress, rotation and non-homogeneity have made. Finally, numerical results have given and illustrated graphically for each case considered.

  • This article presents a semi-analytical solution for an exponentially graded piezoelectric hollow sphere. The sphere interacts with electric displacement, elastic deformations, electric potentials, magneto-thermo-elasticity, and hygrothermal influences. The hollow sphere may be standing under both mechanical and electric potentials. Electro-magneto-elastic behavior of magnetic field vector can be described in the hollow sphere. All material, thermal and magnetic properties of hollow sphere are supposed to be graded in radial direction. A semi-analytical technique is improved to deduce all fields in which different boundary conditions for radial stress and electric potential are presented. Numerical examples for radial displacement, radial and hoop stresses, and electric potential are investigated. The influence of many parameters is studied. It is seen that the gradation of all material, thermal and magnetic properties has particular effectiveness in many applications of modern technology.

  • In this study, the ultrasonic motor which has hollowed cross type stator was designed, and the elastic body of ultrasonic motor was optimized by using a finite element analysis program(ANSYS 9.0). When the length of leg(L) of the elastic body was increased and the width of piezoceramics was decreased, the resonant frequency was increased and the displacement of contact point between the rotor and the stator was increased. However, when the length of the leg was over the 1/3 point of the width of ceramics, the displacement of the contact point was decreased, because the elastic buckle was generated in the leg.

  • The spatially coupled buckling, in-plane, and lateral bucking analyses of thin-walled Timoshenko curved beam with non-symmetric, double-, and mono-symmetric cross-sections resting on elastic foundation are performed based on series solutions. The stiffness matrices are derived rigorously using the homogeneous form of the simultaneous ordinary differential equations. The present beam formulation includes the mechanical characteristics such as the non-symmetric cross-section, the thickness-curvature effect, the shear effects due to bending and restrained warping, the second-order terms of semitangential rotation, the Wagner effect, and the foundation effects. The equilibrium equations and force-deformation relationships are derived from the energy principle and expressions for displacement parameters are derived based on power series expansions of displacement components. Finally the element stiffness matrix is determined using force-deformation relationships. In order to verify the accuracy and validity of this study, the numerical solutions by the proposed method are presented and compared with the finite element solutions using the classical isoparametric curved beam elements and other researchers' analytical solutions.

  • The objective of this study is to examine the fracture characteristics of concrete at early ages such as critical stress intensity factor, critical crack-tip opening displacement, fracture energy based on the concepts of the effective-elastic crack model and the cohesive crack model. A wedge splitting test for Mode I was performed on cubic wedge specimens with a notch at the edge. By varying strength and age, load-crack mouth opening displacement curves were obtained and the results were analyzed by linear elastic fracture mechanics. The results from the test and analysis showed that critical stress intensity factor and fracture energy increased, and critical crack-tip opening displacement decreased with concrete age from 1 day to 28 days. The obtained fracture parameters at early ages may be used as a fracture criterion and an input data for finite element analysis of concrete at early ages.

  • Excavation usually induces considerable ground settlement in soft ground, which may result in damage of adjacent buildings. Generally, the settlement is predicted through elastic-plastic finite element method and empirical method with defects. In this paper, an analytical solution for predicting ground settlement induced by excavation is developed based on the definition of three basic modes of wall displacement: T mode, R mode and P model. A separation variable method is employed to solve the problem based on elastic theory. The solution is validated by comparing the results from the analytical method with the results from finite element method(FEM) and existing measured data. Good agreement is obtained. The results show that T mode and R mode will result in a downward-sloping ground settlement profile. The P mode will result in a concave-type ground settlement profile.

  • Mechanical properties such as Young's modulus and hardness of thin film in coated steel are difficult to determine by nano-indentation from the conventional analysis using the load-displacement curve. Therefore, an analysis of the nano-indentation loading-unloading curve was used to determine the Young's modulus, hardness. A new method is recently being developed for elastic-plastic properties of materials from nano-indentation. Elastic modulus of the thin films shows relatively small influence whereas yield strength is found to have significant effect on measured data. The load-displacement curves of material tested with a Berkovich indenter and nano-indentation continuous stiffness method is used to measure the modulus and hardness through thin films, and then these are computed using the analysis procedure. The developed neural networks apply also to obtain reliable mechanical properties.

  • This paper presents a two dimensional p-version static infinite element for analyzing $1/r^n$ displacement decay type problems in unbounded media. The proposed element is developed by using shape functions based on approximate expressions of an analytical solution. Numerical results are presented for an opening in a homogeneous elastic infinite medium and a rigid footing rested on a homogeneous elastic half-space. The numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed infinite element.

  • In this paper, a ring-type ultrasonic motor divided into 12 sectors was modeled by Atila program using finite element method(FEM). The stator consists of a piezoelectric ceramic poled alternately in opposite directions and elastic material. And the stator dimension was $\Phi$40 (outer diameter), $\Phi$ 30(inner diameter), 0.5mm(ceramic thickness) and 3mm(elastic material thickness). As a simulation result, 6$\lambda$ displacement occurred at approximately 52kHz, and this resonance frequency is similar to calculated result 57kHz. The position of maximum displacement was at the edge of stator.

  • The present paper deals with the analysis of water tank with elastic separator wall. Both fluid and structure are discretized and modeled by eight node-elements. In the governing equations, pressure for the fluid domain and displacement for the separator wall are considered as nodal variables. A method namely, direct coupled for the analysis of water tank has been carried out in this study. In direct coupled approach, the solution of the fluid-structure system is accomplished by considering these as a single system. The hydrodynamic pressure on tank wall is presented for different lengths of tank. The results show that the magnitude of hydrodynamic pressure is quite large when the distances between the separator wall and tank wall are relatively closer and this is due to higher rotating tendency of fluid and the higher sloshed displacement at free surface.
