  • The existing capacity spectrum method (CSM) is based on the displacement based approach for seismic performance and evaluation. Currently, in the domestic and overseas standard concerning seismic design, the CSM to obtain capacity spectrum from capacity curve and demand spectrum from elastic response spectrum is presented. In the multistory building, collapse is affected more by drift than by displacement, but the existing CSM does not work for story drift. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved CSM to estimate story drift of structures through seismic performance and evaluation. It uses the ductility factor in the A-T domain to obtain constant-ductility response spectrum from earthquake response of inelastic system using the drift and capacity curve from capacity analysis of structure.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict and investigate the time-dependent creep behavior of composite materials. For this, firstly the evaluation method for the modulus of elasticity of whole fiber and matrix is presented from the limited information on fiber volume fraction using the singular value decomposition method. Then, the effects of fiber volume fraction on modulus of elasticity of GFRP are verified. Also, as a creep model, the nonlinear curve fitting method based on the Marquardt algorithm is proposed. Using the existing Findley's power creep model and the proposed creep model, the effect of fiber volume fraction on the nonlinear creep behavior of composite materials is verified. Then, for the time-dependent analysis of a composite material subjected to uniaxial tension and simple shear loadings, a user-provided subroutine UMAT is developed to run within ABAQUS. Finally, the creep behavior of center loaded beam structure is investigated using the Hermitian beam elements with shear deformation effect and with time-dependent elastic and shear moduli.

  • This paper reports the results of an experimental study on the compressive strength and the stress-strain curve (SSC) of recycled fine glass aggregate concrete with different replacement percentages of recycled fine glass aggregate. The results show that the recycled fine glass aggregate contents have significant impact on the workability, compressive strength, the elastic modulus, the peak and the ultimate strains of recycled fine glass aggregate concrete. Analytical expressions for the stress-strain relationship of recycled fine glass aggregate concrete are given, which can satisfactorily describe the effect of the recycled fine glass aggregate on the SSC.

  • In this paper, a hysteretic model of rectangular hollow section (RHS) columns that includes the deteriorating range caused by local buckling is proposed. The proposed model consists of the skeleton curve, the Bauschinger part that appears before reaching the maximum strength, the strength increasing part of the deteriorating range, and the unloading part. Of these, the skeleton curve, including the deterioration range caused by local buckling, which is considered to be equivalent to the load-deformation relationship under monotonic loading, is obtained through an analytical method. Bi-linear hysteretic models based on experimental results are applied to the Bauschinger part and the strength increasing part. The elastic stiffness is applied to the unloading part. The proposed model is verified by comparing with experimental results of RHS columns under monotonic and cyclic loading.

  • Predicting fracture properties requires an understanding of structural failure behaviour in relation to specimen type, dimension, and notch length. Facture properties are evaluated using various testing methods, wedge splitting test being one of them. The wedge splitting test was numerically modelled three dimensionally using the finite element method on self compacting concrete specimens with varied specimen and notch depths in the current work. The load - Crack mouth opening displacement curves and the angle of rotation with respect to notch opening till failure are used to assess the fracture properties. Furthermore, based on the simulation results, failure curve was built to forecast the fracture behaviour of self-compacting concrete. The fracture failure curve revealed that the failure was quasi-brittle in character, conforming to non-linear elastic properties for all specimen depth and notch depth combinations.

  • A total of 99 full-scale field load tests at 22 sites were compiled for this study to elucidate several issues related to the load-displacement behaviour of belled piers under axial uplift loading, including (1) interpretation criteria to define various elastic, inelastic, and "failure" states for each load test from the load-displacement curve; (2) generalized correlations among these states and determinations to the predicted ultimate uplift resistances; (3) uncertainty in the resistance model factor statistics required for reliability-based ultimate limit state (ULS) design; (4) uncertainty associated with the normalized load-displacement curves and the resulting model factor statistics required for reliability-based serviceability limit state (SLS) design; and (5) variations of the combined ULS and SLS model factor statistics for reliability-based limit state designs. The approaches discussed in this study are practical and grounded realistically on the load tests of belled piers with minimal assumptions. The results on the characterization and uncertainty of uplift load-displacement behaviour of belled piers could be served as to extend the early contributions for reliability-based ULS and SLS designs.

  • The elastic plastic fracture toughness of this material is evaluated by the an unloading compliance method according to the ASTM E813-97 and E1152-97 method on the smooth and side groove 1CT specimens. The effect of smooth and side groove is studied on the material tearing modulus and characterizes the crack tip field under the plane stress and strain. SG-365 steel is observed that J-R curve and Tmat value decrease as 0%, 20%, 30%, and 40%. The 40% side grooved specimen is very useful in estimation of the $J_IC$. Because it is much easier than the smooth specimen to the onset of the ductile tearing by the R curve method. Besides. it improves the accuracy of toughness values, decreases the scattering the them and tunneling and shear lip by the side groove. Applicability of tearing modulus($T_J$ proposed by paris et al as instability panameter for this material is investigated.

  • Subsets pipelines are exposed to several potential risks of damage due to corrosion, soil instability, anchor impact and other hazards. One of the main risk factors for the safety of a subsea pipeline is its free spanning. This paper examines the safety of subsea pipelines with free span under axial compressive load. The variation of allowable lengths of dynamic free span is examined for generalized boundary conditions. The free span is modelled as a beam with an elastic foundations and the boundary condition is replaced by linear and rotational springs at each end. A dynamic free span curve is obtained with a function of non-dimensional parameters and can be used usefully for the design of subsea pipelines with a free span. A case study is carried out to introduce the application method of the curve.

  • The effects of strain amplitude. test temperature and stress on the fatigue properties for Ti-Ni wires were investigated using a rotary bending fatigue tester specially designed for wires. The fatigue test results were discussed in connection with the static tensile properties. The DSC measurement was conducted after fatigue test in order to clarify the change of transformation behavior due to the progress of fatigue. Under the temperature below or near the Af, the strain amplitude($\varepsilon_a$)-failure life (Nf) curve showed to be composed of three straight lines with two turning points. Of the 2 turning points, the upper one was coincident with the elastic limit strain and the lower one with the proportional limit strain. With rising of the test temperature above Af, the pattern of $\varepsilon_a$-Nf curve changed gradually to composition of 2 straight lines. The $\varepsilon_a$-Nf curve shifted depending on test temperature. In the short and medium life zones, the higher the temperature was, the shorter the fatigue life. However, in the long life zone, above the Af temperature, the fatigue life was not affected by the temperature. The transformation enthalpy measured after fatigue test was dependent on Nf, $\varepsilon_a$, and test temperature.

  • UV imprinting process can manufacture high-functional optical components with low cost. If hard polymers can be used as transparent molds at this process, the cost will be much lower. However, there are limited researches to predict the machinability and the burr of hard polymers. Therefore, a new method to predict them by analyzing load-depth curves which can be obtained by the instrumented indentation test was developed in this study. The load-depth curve contains elastic deformation and plastic deformation simultaneously. The ratio of the plastic deformation over the sum of the two deformation is proportional to the ductility of materials which is one of the parameters of the machinability and the burr. The instrumented indentation tests were performed on the transparent molds of the hard polymers and the values of ratio were calculated. The machinability and the burr of three kinds of hard polymers were predicted by the ratio, and the prediction was in agreement with the experimental results from the machined surfaces of the three kinds of hard polymers.
